Have you ever bought a car in the US? New models are announced years in advance and you have an excellent idea of when a new model will come out. There are TONs of "end of model year" sales and inventory reduction sales.

Again, my problem is not so much the lack of PM updates (which is really annoying) but charging the same amount today as last September. You said yourself that you bought in September when the models were first shipping. The problem here is we all expect updates, but don't know when they're coming, and if we order now we pay the same amount you did in September and (most likely) the same amount people will pay after the update for a better model.

My point was that you don't see this in the computer world. And, even in the car world, prices don't dip until, sometimes, immediately prior to the new car announcements and only because of money-back rebates. It's not like a $30K car (in October) turns into a $28K car in December, a $26K car in February, etc. Sticker prices stay the same. Incentives are added in winter months and near model-year end (like the $500 ACD rebate). But stickers stay the same. Even though the new models have better features. Which is why many people buy either early in the model year or very late in it. If you wait for the new G5's, I can assure you you'll find cheaper rev A ones out there, just as in the auto world. But that Sony VAIO that costs $2599 when it's announced will cost exactly the same an hour before it's discontinued. Same in the Mac world.

Powermac Stocks Getting Lower

The powermacs are selling very fast on ClubMac. Their stocks are down 500 respectively for each model froma few days ago after getting new shipments. The Stocks of the displays are also getting lower, with the 23 inch selling the most. Looks like Apple's promo is working...

1.6s: 452
dual 1.8s: 1494
dual 2s: 816

Updates soon?

(Not tomorrow)
:D

But it is Tuesday... ;)

Yes, and Apple's warning to its dealers of an anticipated "dry spell" for stock (no supply) over several weeks before any new Macs are released, is apparently coming true.
Good observation invaLPsion, thanks. ;)

2nd Edition -- G5 motherboard problems?

Customers who have damaged (burnt out) motherboards needing replacement are starting to get concerned about the delay in repair.
Demand for G5 motherboards is beginning to stack up with AppleCare, now weeks (many) behind in providing a replacement.
Apple's demand for "replacement motherboards" appears to be out stripping the timely receipt of regular shipments of parts.
Some customers report being promised by Apple through text and over the phone that a
shipment of their part has been received and the
repair is ongoing, later to find out that
"yes, a shipment for your motherboard was received,
unfortunately, not enough were received to cover your order.
We are expecting a new shipment within the week. Please be patient." or words to that effect.
Me thinks something is amiss.

• Is the G5 motherboard problem in already sold G5s greater than any of us has been lead to believe?
• Is there a supply problem of some sort, not only with replacement parts, but within the new manufacturer of G5s?
• Has the motherboard part problem affected current manufacturer of G5s, including the new, delayed Xserve?
• Could this be part of the reason March 23rd, along with subsequent Tuesdays, passed without new PowerMacs?
• Has Apple hastened ramping up of the design for a new G5 release because of problems with the old motherboard.

What thinks ye, fellow Rumormongers?

Can anyone confirm a Motherboard Replacement Problem with their G5?
Can anyone confirm a DELAY in having their G5 Motherboard replaced, including delivery promises not being kept by Apple?

(I still would not want a PC)

Apparently they gathered the specs of the rev B Powermacs (unconfirmed I think). But they also add there's still an unknown delay for these machines to hit the streets..

Could they be correct? Have they in the past? If so, I'll go for the mid-end model for sure.

Just looks like a rumor site to me. I used babel fish to translate and it looks like they've been predicting all sorts of stuff for a while. They don't seem to point to any source, just their opinions/stuff they've pulled from the net.

For what it's worth, they were right on with the security update. It was on their site a couple of days before it was released. But then again, a security update would have much less "security" than a product update, and could easily get out.

If their rumor on the specs is correct it would be great- as long as it's soon.

We are missing 2 pieces of information here. When? and AT WHAT PRICE?
Oh well...

We've seen similar specs before. The only thing that could hint to a real source is the product numbers. But of course, it's easy to make them up. On the other hand, I doubt the low end configuration will have dual cpus. Anyway I still think no new PMs before WWDC.

I would agree . . . unless there is a G5 iMac in the fairly near future.

If Apple can come out with a lower end computer with the G5 chip, they can make all the iMacs single CPU machines -- leaving the PowerMacs all dual.

As for the release date, you're probably right -- though I hate the idea of waiting that long. Maybe NAB is still possible? (I doubt it.)

As for the prices, NicoMan, count on them being the same as today (give or take $100). Do not expect a price reduction for new G5s. A price reduction for new G5s would be the biggest shocker of the year.

I like those specs A LOT...

That middle-of-the-line looks awesome!

The specs look very nice indeed, however, I think we're looking at a liberal dose of wishful thinking. For example, who honestly thinks the mid-range model will come with 1GB RAM, 250GB hard drive and a 9800XT? I'll believe it when I see it.

Another Tuesday Gone

Another Tuesday has come and no updates. :( I guess Apple really has become a digital music device company.

if you want to order a Power Mac now, check the refurb section of the store for a good price...

I have two questions. Do G5 desktops come with speakers? And can my technician plug my speaker system which came with my Dell, into the G5?
Well if you dell uses two mini jacks or an SPDIF output, then sure. If it uses something else, then there may need to be a work around. But I've used old dell speakers on my old mac...

roll on 3 ghz +

I've just bougt a second hand powermac and a new 17" screen to buy me time and quell the panic for a new g5 as I'm not prepared to buy until at least rev b. The screen is awsome, my advise to anyone considering a new screen is don't hesitate; their fantastic. I was planning on buying g5 any day now but figure on waiting until much later in the year as the urgency is no more. I'll wait for 3ghz + and I don't mind when they come. It's nice avoiding that sinking feeling every Tuesday!

Whats special about Tuesdays? Couldn't Apple release update on any given day?

Yes, but the majority of their hardware updates/releases are on Tuesdays. Occassionally there has been other days Apple has decided to update/release harware.

Ok, quick question...

I too am going to make the switch. I can wait and will wait (waiting since January) for the Rev B. release. However I may want to purchase a refurb for the wifey. Now my question is to you people that know history of Apple new releases. Will they drop the prices of the current models before the new ones are released? If they do this I will wait and buy the wife a new one. If they don't I will buy a refurb now.

Thanks for your time...

So you post a reply telling us you're waiting 11 more days. OK.

My Opinion on the Specs offered by Croquer

The specs actually seem about right to me. They are just too detailed to be randomly made up. There is lots of information provided and it seems like these could very well be the machines. Lets review.

Model Number: After comparing the model numbers provided by Croquer with the current number they just seem to make sense.

Processor Speeds: Right on track to make the small update to 3GHz in late summer or at WWDC. (2.6, 2.8, 3.0) These speeds have been rumored by AI and MOSR as well.

Ram: The ram sizes make sense as MOSR has also confirmed higher ram sizes on the next round of powermacs, also owing to the fact that DDR400 has greatly dropped in price.

Graphics Cards: XT cards have been rumored to be used on the next powermacs. They make sense as long as the vram is kept to 128. Perhaps an AGP version of the R400 series as top BTO option?

Media: Who didn't expect the next powermacs to go with the Pioneer 8x drives?

Hard Drive: Hard drives have become increasingly cheaper for higher sizes. Seems right to me...

Expansion: Not sure about this one, but it seems like Apple may be up to something. The originality of this report indicates that it could be correct about expansion.

Prices: $1999, $2499, $2999. These make a lot of sense to me. It has been stated that the new 90nm processor is cheaper to manufacture. In addition, RAM, HDs, and media drives have become much cheaper over the last 9 months. Also, remember, we saw Apple double up the processors on the 1.8 for only $100 more! They can have these prices points on these machines and still make a profit.

Now the only question is WHEN we will see these beautiful machines. :)
