2 things:

  1. Whoever thought of that antenna design is so fired.
  2. They should've kept the 3G/3GS design.

Hahahaha

Yeah the 128MB of RAM is really struggling with this OS. It's painful to load just about anything these days on it. Phone/contact book takes 10 seconds to load, e-mail gets stuck often, game apps take forever, even the camera takes 15 seconds to load.

Poor experience overall.

This has been my problem as well. iOS 4 copletely ruined the performance on my iPhone 3G (bought on day 2 of the release in '08). Apple should have either not brought iOS 4 to the 3G or needs to give an easy option to roll back as this is making them look bad. Also, I strongly suspect that iOS 4 has some serious memory leaks on the 3G as I've found that once my phone starts to really lag and crash in built-in apps I can make it do a little better by rebooting.

As for the antenna debacle, Apple may not do a recall but they will probably see much worse sales of this phone vs previous models due to the negative publicity regarding reception and scratch/crack issues. We could even see a mid-cycle refresh which fixes the issues. I had considered upgrading to the iPhone 4 (eligible for over 6 months now) but there is no way I'm going to commit to it now until these issues are resolved. I'll either hold out another year (if the iOS is fixed on the 3G) or maybe even switch phones if it looks like no end to this is in sight.

Why does Apple's statement keep getting misconstrued like this?

The potential for higher attenuation is a fact of life with external antennas, but I (and apparently Apple) think the trade-off is fair for better reception in the vast majority of situations (i.e., when you don't touch that part of the phone, or use a case).

Uh... but with a bumper on it, it then effectively is no longer is an 'external' antenna, so they should have just put a coating on it in the first place.

There is no way Apple will do a recall. The important questions to be asked are 1) Will Apple address the issue again before the 30 day return period is up? and 2) If they do make a minor change in future production to correct the issue, would owners of the launch batch be able to take it in to Apple, say they're having a problem keeping phone calls due to the antenna issue and get it exchanged for a new one under the one year warranty? I would think so to that question which is why I'll probably just wait it out and see what happens. I rarely hold the phone there anyway but if it was corrected, I'd feel like I deserve a new one. If nothing else, it'll protect my resell value. Say they fix this on all new production...no one will want to buy a defective launch iPhone 4 on eBay.

27" iMac

How about the 27" iMac as well? They still haven't managed to fix that either.

I find it amazing how people mix up your/you're .. is it really that difficult? same with there/their/they're

ANYWAY. this whole thing is a huge fiasco...

"toyota style crisis"......did i miss something here, did someone die from signal drop?!

good grief people, have we forgotten something?! it's just a phone, a silly old phone.

I am soooooooooooooo happy. I llove the stock tanking. I love how steve. Lojob will lose his sleep. I love this -ve publicity. I was waitimg for this day for long. Cant believe it came. Love my3gs but hate these freakin jobs. Let him go down. Let the stock gpw down to 100

I'm stickin

I got the phone the first day, I put a cover on it, like 99% of the people do. It works as well or better than my old iPhone. I was a design flaw, it only affects people who don't buy a case for there phone. I would consider it a non issue, if it wasn't apple this story would have been dead after the first day!!

If it still gets better reception than other phones in most situations, then it’s nothing like Toyota. PR experts know that it’s good PR for themselves to cash in on the Apple hysteria :) I’ve seen no evidence that this is a big problem for any but a very small minority (who do indeed need either a refund or a fix).

It’s a smaller problem, for instance, than the battery issues with various Android phones (no power, no reception). And those have not been mass recalled.

I’ll find out on Thursdsay for myself! I’ll test my iPhone 4 where I know the signal is weak for both AT&T and Verizon.

Apple should:

a) improve the design even if the problem doesn’t affect many.

b) give the new design to people on request—not to everyone (what a waste)

c) communicate better, and not walk right into obvious PR traps :)

Alternatively, I want an orange case and wouldn’t say no to one :)

Droid Incredible is a better experience. I am a fanboy but my brother has the incredible and its faster, sleeker and a better UI.

The Droid UI looks like the Symbian UI from the mid '90s. It's horrific. No UI is as great as Apple's, which is why they're all trying to copy it.

Sense UI is nothing like symbian's default UI. Where did you get that crazy idea?

Dumbas*

All you people hoping for recall and it turns out to be a software issue on how the iPhone calibrates a signal and you end up getting nothing. LMAO ROTFL:D

According to Apple the iPhone has always shown a higher signal on the phone than what is available, maybe to help AT&T's image on their network???

The software dose not cause the signal to drop, holding it does.

Dorping a call becuase you are simply holding the phne is a design issue.

Just wondering if people overseas are seeing this issue - all the noise is about AT&T and in the US - but I haven't been able to find an iphone 4 in the UK that can show the problem -
Is it somehow an AT&T thing? am I useless at holding the phone? Does it only affect some phones?

Just curious as to how far this spreads outside the US as I haven't seen/heard much noise about it over here in the UK. I would think it should affect all phones on all networks - anyone have any data??

Sure do.

I'm on the O2 network here in the UK and can easily reproduce the problem. My flat is in an area of weak signal, and when held in the wrong way (which I often forget to avoid), my phone goes to "no service". This did not happen with my iPhone 3G (or any other of the 6 different handsets we've used in the same location).

Tried to return it before the 30 day period following Apple's press release, but as I bought the phone on a tie-in with the network, I can't return it. ?!?! So, according to the lovely retailer I purchased it from, I'm stuck with a phone for 2 years, that is inherently faulty. I thought we'd come far with consumer law, but it doesn't appear so in this case.

I'm sure the matter will progress further, once the "fix" is released, and everyone still has the same problem.

You’re right here mate............but it is Apple which means it was always going to be a big deal and they need to do something ASAP.

I have said already in this thread, this time next year it will be mostly forgotten about as long as Apple deal with it soon.

Apple won't recall the iPhone 4. That is too drastic. I think Apple will spin off this issue by blaming AT&T as much as possible, leading to a Verizon partnership next year. That was their reasoning when they said that the iPhone bar calculations were wrong, meaning that it's displaying reception that you never got. I believe Apple will maintain this position, while quietly handing out free bumpers to those that want one.

There is no chance in hell Jobs is gonna come out and say "well, apparently this new iPhone 4 antenna system is not a breakthrough design afterall, ignore everything I said about it at WWDC."

Only a matter of time before we see 'Get a Droid' type commercials like mac used to have bashing windows stability issues....karma is a bitch

You are so right! Remember the commercials over the xmas holidays where Verizon attacked AT&T for poor 3G coverage? Well I'm sure VZ's PR dept is already making commercials for their Droid X getting more bars in more places.
