"toyota style crisis"......did i miss something here, did someone die from signal drop?

Yeah, you did miss something, dumb-ass.

The quote is "Toyota-style PR crisis," not "toyota style crisis."

Do you really not see the difference?

Consumer Reports doesn't "predict" PR crises, they CAUSE them. Too many old and uneducated people rely on their biased, slanted, and technically inept reviews. Ever heard of the Suzuki Samurai? A great SUV, reliable, solid, and perfectly stable. Most people think it's rollover prone because Consumer Reports said it was unstable in test driving. Here's the reality: “If you can't find someone to roll this car, I will!” — Irwin Landau, Editorial Director, Consumer Reports. That statement was made to Kevin Sheehan, the guy in charge of test driving. They had to totally redesign the test track to make the vehicle a tiny bit unstable. A redesign that surely many other vehicles Consumer Reports has found no problem with would tip slightly on. It was not prone to tipping, or any other such thing CR said.

Yet, they made a PR disaster for Suzuki because they wanted to. No other reason. They're just trying to do the same to Apple. The difference is, this time there may be a real issue, they're just blowing it up to larger than life and predicting disaster. There's a tiny issue that can be fixed by simply avoiding touching one spot on the antenna!

Ever own one? I did. You are wrong.

Trolls?

I've posted before on this issue - I have had my iPhone 4 since day 1 and it has worked perfectly. It seems there are a LOT of trolls of this forum - I don't normally believe in conspiracies but one wonders if the competition isn't deliberately stirring this non-issue up. Apple needs to stay calm and not be baited by its detractors.

As someone who has an iPhone 4, and holds it left-handed with no case, this is still a non-issue to me. It gets better reception than my 3GS ever did and in places my 3GS never did.

I know half a dozen people with iPhone 4s and none of them care about it, either. This is a PR disaster, certainly, but an engineering disaster? Not so much.

Though I wouldn't mind the dip in Apple's stock price caused by a recall. I'd like to buy some shares.

I have a friend who has an iphone 4. He also has a blackberry, and a nokia. At his house, no matter how he holds the iphone it drops calls, while the blackberry and nokia work just fine.

And GUESS WHAT ... they're ALL using AT&T!!!

I am soooooooooooooo happy. I llove the stock tanking. I love how steve. Lojob will lose his sleep. I love this -ve publicity. I was waitimg for this day for long. Cant believe it came. Love my3gs but hate these freakin jobs. Let him go down. Let the stock gpw down to 100

why?!

what has happened in your life, or is missing in your life, that seeing something like that happen will make everything better?!

can't believe the world we live in when we're sitting around losing sleep over things as trivial as all of this.

3 points:
1) there will not be a recall. It's not a safety issue, and a huge number of buyers are happy with their purchase.
2) I'm tired of the "it doesn't work as a phone" comments. Stop trolling. Yes, there is a real issue, and it's not software-based. But it does work as a phone under any of the following situations: you don't hold it that way (and many people don't, without any conscious effort); you use a case (and honestly, probably 3/4 of iPhone 3G/3GS that I see have cases anyway); you're in a high coverage area.
3) in my 7 years on this forum, I've never seen people behave as badly as with this issue. The venom and personal attacks are disgusting and by forum rules should have about half the posters in this thread banned by now. People, it's a phone. How about a rational discussion without the flaming?

QFT

And just a sidenote:

Do you people really think it's a coincidence, that the white ones are still not available? The white one won't have that hardware issue - they are working on it.

And as soon as they have sorted it out, there will be an exchange program Nothing more, nothing less.

Still waiting for the white one to appear in Germany, and then buying one :D

You don't need signal strength if you just like looking at it! My 4 is already in a lucite display case next to my 3GS, 3G, and first gen. So beautiful.... Does nobody appreciate true beauty? :p

About time.. I hope they fix the glass top too. Mine already has some bad scratches.

:(

This.

I haven't done anything out of the ordinary with my phone and it usually goes in my purse when I'm not using it, but it's already gotten some scratches. I got the bumper, so I don't really care about this antenna thing, but the screen is a real pain. I was going to get a ZAGG cover for the front and the back when I got back to the States, but a fat lot of good it'll do with the scratches I've gotten on there already.

I just want my phone to work! Hell, Apple just fix it. Its the BEST phone on the market, but this antenna issue is very annoying. I'll be happy to go to the Apple Store and they spray some kind of spray on it to fix it.

I can't see there being a mass recall, as many users are reporting nothing wrong with their phones. I know there are many having problems and that's unacceptable but if everyone could replicate this problem thats the only way Apple would do a recall.

Apple's whole handling on this situation has been extremely appalling. First denying all problem telling people to hold it differently to releasing a frankly bizarre half-baked statement about signal representation.

To the people constantly whining "take it back and get an evo LOLZ" "if you don't like it take it back....bla bla bla" it just isn't that simple. Apple has created an ecosystem and many users have invested a lot in iTunes music, videos, and apps and if they move to the competition that would be a lot of money they have just thrown down the drain.

I haven't got a clue what Apple should do, but I know they need some damage limitation soon.

1) More likely than not there will be a recall. It may not be a safety issue, but it is a brand/reputation issue and a huge number of buyers are not happy with the flawed product and Apple's response to it.

2) I'm tired of the "Mine works fine comments". No one likes a gloater. Stop trolling. Yes, there is a real issue, and it's not software-based. It does not work as a phone under any of the following situations: you hold it normally (as many people including Steve Jobs hold it); you use it as it comes out of the box ie. without a case (and honestly, all the people in Apple's promotional materials are using it without a case); you're in a medium to low coverage area.

Lesson for Apple: Always perform a final test with a product in its final form (no 3GS case disguises!).

Lesson for Us: Never be the first to buy any new product (car, computer, software, cell phone, etc). Let the "day 1 fools" buy it first....wait until the bugs are worked out.

my life is actually pretty good. I can actually afford an "r" key on my computer keyboard.

Seriously though, why not just return the phone? Not a personal attack but a valid question (and it applies to everyone here). The only thing Apple owes any of us is a product that is worthy of the money we spend on it. If the product fails to live up to that standard, return it. You've put the problem back in their lap where it belongs.

I've had no problems with my iPhone 4. I find it very much worth the $299 I paid for it. You do not share my experience. So take it back. It's Apple's responsibility to provide a functional product or refund your money.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could return, say, a car that didn't live up to your expectations? Be glad your unhappy iPhone 4 experience need not cost you a dime. I'm confident Apple will ensure they not repeat this ugly mistake with iPhone 5 (or iPhone 4.5, however they decide to play this).

"the iPhone 4 reception issue presents a Toyota-style PR crisis for Apple, and the company must respond with a more meaningful fix than a software patch."

The person writing the original article clearly has no idea what they're talking about. "more meaningful fix than a software patch." implies that fixing the problem doesn't matter, which is nuts.

I hope they are recalled to fix this, but i doubt it with the huge numbers involved. Bought on launch day and am really disappointed with the signal issue. My finger always touches the bottom left corner when browsing the internet comfortably.

You're almost correct. What happens when the two antennas are bridge is the impdeance of each antenna changes and causes the receiver/xmitter front end to decouple thus affecting the signal. Because of the inherent design of very low signal strength associated with cell technology, all phone antennas are designed to be optimally tuned to deliver the signal. Its all about the physics and electrical design for radio frequency emissions.

Oh, sure. Impedance does indeed seem to nicely wrap up the argument. I'm in the "slightly informed" rather than the "properly informed" group of people; I'll be able to help you out once the signal passes the A/D converter ;)

Being in that category: I have no faith in a software fix, outside of, possibly, a less overestimated signal strength indication. No software-fix will resolve the issue in situations where calls are dropped.

Well why not allow the people who are having problems to send their phone in, and the people who are completely satisfied just don't. Lol.

..and Android trolls, i've got one message for you.

the iPhone 4 is STILL BETTER than your phone!:cool::cool:

You ****ing loser!

You've gotten to the point where you're quoting yourself?

Multiple times?

It's idiots like you that make me embarrassed to be a Mac supporter.
