Everyone can have their own opinions, that's why these things tend to be silly. But if you don't even watch the movie and declare it shouldn't be the winner based on the trailer then your opinion is moot. *cough* yg17 *cough*

At least I'm not voting for the award. I would be surprised if everyone who cast a ballot for Best Picture actually saw all 10 films that were nominated.

I own both Harold and Kumar movies. I bought the South Park movie on Blu Ray when it came out in 2009 even though I already owned the DVD. Shaun of the Dead is my idea of Best Foreign Film. My personal opinion is that The Hangover should've been nominated and won for Picture of the Year. That's what a film has to be to be exciting to me ;)

Action movies like Inglorious Basters and District 9 are good, and I do enjoy watching them, but nothing entertains me more than a comedy that everyone else thinks is crap.

I liked all of those too, with the exception of Shawn of the Dead.

But I wouldn't consider them to be monumental achievements.

At least I'm not voting for the award. I would be surprised if everyone who cast a ballot for Best Picture actually saw all 10 films that were nominated.

Why? It's the motion picture industry voting on itself. It's their industry. I'm sure they did watch them all. Even I saw all of them except for Up in the Air.

I was kinda surprised by that as well. I thought best picture was in the bag....

Avatar didn't have the characterization or the plot line to win it. It won technical awards, as it should have. It was brilliant from a technical standpoint. But we've all seen that story dozens of times told in different ways. Dances with Wolves, anyone?

I really liked the Hurt Locker. I had a feeling it would win some awards, but I'm pretty surprised that it won Best Picture.

I really expected Avatar to win everything.....

I wasn't Expecting best picture but Director. For some one to work 10 years on on a Movie and supposedly change how movies will be changed how do you not give Cameron at least director.

I've seen most of the major movies this year. I'm not surprised The Hurt Locker won like it did. It's funny because The Hurt Locker may have been the best film but it's the kind of film you only want to see once. I think Avatar and Up In the Air are the kind of movies that will have more longevity.

The most overrated movie to me this year was District 9. I don't know why so many people liked it. I thought it was horrible. Peter Jackson was wise to be just a producer and not a director.

I wasn’t surprised The Hurt Locker won Best Picture especially over Avatar.

Avatar was so over-hyped, and let’s be honest — they only reason it was a blockbuster hit was because it was 3D. The story was cliché and the characters weren’t exactly moving. It was basically a two and half hour tech demo directed by James (or is it Jim now?) Cameron.

But maybe I’m biased since I couldn’t ever get over the sheer amount of story and character similarities between Avatar and the early 90’s kids film Fern Gully. :D

I’ve seen The Blind Side, Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Precious and UP. I’m looking forward to seeing the other Best Picture nominees and some of the documentaries including the one about the dolphins.

Yeah, so? It’s like that every year. Of course, you’re not going to want to watch movies like The Hurt Locker or Precious over again.
I bet UP is watched over and over again more than any of the nine other nominees, but I’m glad studios still take a risk on films like Locker and Precious.

Here are some upsets tonight (IMO) - an on a side note, I loved the dual host idea. Steve Martin was great.

Best Original Screenplay - Hurt Locker - Ok, maybe it's not a huge upset but "Inglourious Basterds" definitely had a great script. I liked Hurt Locker, I really did, but I don't think it deserved this title.

Best Adapted Screenplay - Precious - I think the academy voters are off their knockers this year... maybe they are just out of touch with the modern movie goers and movie critics. I don't think ANYONE thought Precious had a better adapted screenplay. Although it's a touching story, Up in the Air's representation of the modern life frustrations is pin point accurate.... it's not everyday that you make a movie that's better than the book.

Best Cinematography - Avatar - what can I say... these voters don't understand what cinematography is.... so they are like "ooo pretty movie, vote Avatar." White Ribbon should have won it... go watch the movie, the black and white style spoke more to the audience than any pretty 3D effects Hollywood can conjure up.

Best Original Score - Up - I voted for up, but I didn't expect it to win, I just voted for what I liked best. I thought Avatar or Fantastic Mr. Fox would get the nod because I liked their soundtracks as well. However, every time I hear that theme from Up I cry a little because it reminds me of the sadness from the beginning of the movie and how it changed in the end. Life is wonderful even if you have few days to live.

Best Actress - Sandra Bullock - Ok.. not a surprise but I think I speak for at least 40% of the readers out there when I say: "Meryl deserved it more."

(I know I'm kind of just ranting about nominees I voted for but I could really care less about if I'm winning this poll or not. I think that the academy should reconsider how it votes because some of these wins are not deserving IMO.)

Umm, no it's not. This year's the 50th anniversary of Casablanca. Ever heard of it? Ever heard of Silence of the Lambs? Titanic? The Godfather? Platoon? Gone with the Wind? The Wizard of Oz? Pride of the Yankees? Who cares how many times it is watched. A child will watch the same animated film for one month straight. It's about if people will still be watching it 50 years from now. The Hurt Locker is a great film for today.

Maybe for you the Best Picture is an annual throwaway film but historically it's not.

Contest results

Here are the results for our contest's official entrants (those who posted by Saturday, which means they were in my contest spreadsheet). I'll recompute it with the late-entrants tomorrow.

MacRumors 2009 Oscar contest results:
1st place (16 correct): DoctorQ
2nd place (14 correct, tie): dejo, PowerbookFAN
4th place (11 correct, tie): King Mook Mook, NEENAHBOY, xUKHCx
7th place (9 correct): Jaffa Cake
8th place (8 correct, tie): iBookG4user, obeygiant, Surely
11th place (7 correct): MacDawg
12th place (6 correct): leomac08

Last year NEENAHBOY had 17 correct. That would have been enough for an uncontested win this year.

Congratulations to everyone who entered. You beat over 414,000 MacRumors member who failed to enter and therefore got scores of zero. And everyone got a better score than if they'd made random guesses, so we're all good judges of the movies.

The Oscar show won't win an Emmy. It had quite a few glitches: A mike was left on while someone was walking off the stage talking. After one return from commercial you could see somebody scurrying across the stage. There was a rushing/whooshing background sound while one of the actresses was being praised (in those overly long tributes by people who had worked with them). There were apparently mistakes on some cue cards. They cut off the microphone just as one co-winner started to speak. And of course the show ran over its alloted time despite the rudeness of the orchestra cutting off someone trying to finish a sentence on one of the great days of their lives. Did you catch how they quickly cut away so that you couldn't see a message supporting dolphins?

But complaining about the show and the award choices is part of the fun! :)

Aren't you glad Kathryn Bigelow didn't proclaim "I'm queen of the world!"?

Random guessing would get you an average score of 4.97 correct.

None of us called these three:
  • Music by Prudence for Best Documentary Short Subject
  • The Secret in Their Eyes (from Argentina) for Best Foreign Language Film
  • The Hurt Locker for Best Sound Editing
Only bobob and xUKHCx called The Hurt Locker for Best Sound Mixing.

Only King Mook Mook called Logorama for Best Animated Short Film. How did you know?

Congratulations, Doctor Q! You sure know your movies......!!!!!!

For some reason I hadn't seen ANY of the nominees this year so didn't bother to even try taking guesses.....

One of the best parts of the whole broadcast was that they had an advert for the iPad -- three times!!!!

Congratulations, Doctor Q! You sure know your movies......!!!!!!

Not to detract from Doctor Q's victory celebrations, but ability to accurately predict Oscar winners has less do do with knowing movies, than with knowing movie politics.

Congrats on the win Doc!
