When do you think an untethered iOS5 jailbreak will be released

maybe because the jailbreak uses an exploit that could also be used to create malware if apple doesn't close it. And the percentage of people who care about a jailbreak is tiny compared to the number of iPhone owners.

Correct.

But even still, Apple could work WITH jailbreaks to at least allow some level of deeper customization.

Yes, it is a double-edged sword, isn't it. I am happy that Apple pays close attention to the vulnerabilities in their OS. But jeez give the dev_team a little time lol!

I find this business about patching iTunes to send reports to the dev team hilarious. I mean seriously, are they trying to tell us that they only knew that apple patched the 5 'holes' they found a week ago? I don't think it would of been that hard to send a tweet about this ages ago.

I mean, kudos to the dev team for all their hard work and I wish I could do half of what they could, but I don't see any harm in "Hey world, just an update that at the moment we have nothing" when they knew they had nothing. It might have even inspired more people to look for the next flaw.

Not to mention, 80% of people can't even get their program to send crash logs in the first place.

With every passing day, the chances of an untethered jailbreak coming in 2011 does not look good.

Yes, but you must appreciate that the people working on this (as a hobby) would like nothing more to release the jb to us as gift in the spirit of the season. They surely are busy enough without trying to break Apple's code on top of it all right now. I'm just glad to know that some folks are trying just because they enjoy the chase, and not for personal gain. It will be released when it is ready for public consumption.

I just decided Im tired of Apples closed OS. Having to wait for months for an untethered jailbreak is too much. No jailbreak on iPhone 4S (and possibly iPhone 5) is also a shame. Its all Apples fault.

Ill wait till next year for the SGS3 or some other cool HTC Android phone. I keep watching Youtube videos of the emulators that can be played on Android: N64, GBA, PSX, Game Gear... I want those.

Yea I've been watching the Nexus on AT&T closely. I'll buy that or the SGS3 in a few months, especially if the jailbreak scene is as bleak as it is now.

I love iOS devices, but iOS itself is too boring and strapped down. Plus, Apple hasn't listened to the hardcore fans by implementing simple features like quick reply texting.

Unless you look at what @iHackman007 has been saying..

In short, he has something available, untethered, and nearly ready for release. Target date: 12/25/2011.

Like all other developers, take it at your own risk.

So I downloaded redsn0w, upgraded to iOS 5, and when I tried to jailbreak, it said my device was unknown, and asked me to check if my device/OS was supported. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm in no rush either. I'm loving iOS 5. :D

Download the ipsw
redsnow
extras
select ipsw
now select the ipsw you are using (point to 5.0 if you have ios 5.0, point to 5.0 ipsw for ios 5.0.1 using redsnow 0.9.9.b8)

so basically u will manually point redsnow to ios 5 for jailbreaking and booting for both ios 5.0 as well as 5.0.1
and u can boot tethered without internet

tried ad test on ios 5.0.1 iphone 4 32gb black

Hey, can you help me with this? I downloaded redsn0w and tried jailbreaking, but it said my device was unrecognized and didn't think my software (iOS 5.0.1) was supported yet. It's a fourth-generation iPod Touch 8GB. Thanks.

Actually I read back in his tweets... he said it's 99 % done and he WILL be releasing it on Christmas Day. He even posted to musclenerd and p0sixninja etc asking them if it was ok to release his JB (to be named Explicit and will be untethered on 5.0, 5.0.1 and 5.1) on that date (so as not to jeopardize future JBs). If that isn't convincing enough.... how about this:

of course it could be photoshopped... (or an iPhone 4 with Siri installed - oopps just noticed it DOES say iPhone 4,1 - so it IS a 4s)... but I give him the benefit of the doubt especially since he's been posting to musclenerd and the others.

So it looks hopeful now???

I am going to still follow ihackman on twitter to see how this pans out. Sounds too good to be true, but hey you never know he could be the next comex or ionic.

A tweet from that guy on 28th November said he would be releasing the 4S jailbreak that same week................ Where is it now?

He is a fake.

Funny.. I remember people calling Geohot a fake as well, yet look at what he's done.

How about reserving judgment until the time comes of his expected release, then let the results of his work tell the tale?

Otherwise, you'd look like a fool if he does release it and it does work, and yet you called him a fake.

I think it might be a case of "Everyone's a fake until proven otherwise" or until they are accepted by the rest of the JB community. And I can see why the rest of the JB community won't just accept every Tom Dick and Harry who claims to be able to hack, with open arms.

I will wait until Dec 25th and then see if it's real or not... If he's claiming that it's working, 99% done, and untethered... and that he already has a "one click" solution to deliver it... then there would be no reason for it not to be released on the 25th. If it's not released on the 25th, then I guess we have our answer.

I added him on Twitter so I can follow this closely...

I fail to understand that if he is basically done why he would intentionally wait until Christmas

I guess I'm just beyond impatient and can't stand having a phone without a jailbreak anymore.

Either way, I just hope that exploits are conserved and at this point, I guess it's best to just wait for 5.1 as it's already in beta and probably due out around Christmas anyways.

EDIT: And to add, I'm thrilled we have a new potential jailbreak dev on the scene. With comex and geohot gone, this is GOOD, not BAD news. Who cares if he's fake, he's potentially doing you a favor by jail breaking your phone. I guess time will tell. I would also take musclenerd's tweets with a grain of salt. He is a genius and great community contributor, and isn't always necessarily wrong, but he tends to get very defensive and immature when someone new storms onto the scene with unlocks or jailbreaks.

The picture he claims of his iPhone 4S jailbreak its actually an iPhone 4, as seen by the code name iPhone 4,1...

No.

iPhone 4 (GSM) = iPhone 3,1
iPhone 4 (CDMA) = iPhone 3,2
iPhone 4 (World) = iPhone 3,3

iPhone 4S (World) = iPhone 4,1
