What they should have done (if the problem with shipping both engraved/non-engraved units is too many to handle) is ship them out according to day/time ordered. If it is apparent that both can be ready at the same time (which it definitely was so cuz mine was shipped on Mar. 9), then it would make sense to do it "first come, first served". Because now people that ordered a day or two after the ones who ordered immediately (like me, as soon as the site came back on!) got theirs while the engravers who ordered 1st day are out of luck. But this could be Apple's grand plan to save money by making people think twice about engraving. Especially the ones who ordered on launch day should get it at least at the same time as someone who just pops into the store now. Not after. What is the perk of pre-ordering, then?
As of Friday evening, my iPad has finally started to move again. I have a Departure Scan from Louisville as of 18:24, a full week after it arrived there. I would think it can make it to Halifax by Monday (that's what Apple provided as my delivery date). Still no delivery date listed on the UPS site.
You raise an interesting point in your "first come, first served" argument. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, to me, to artificially delay the engraved iPads if they are available to be shipped, while at the same time delivering non-engraved iPads on launch day that were ordered a day or two after the engraved ones.
It is frustrating in that it seems that they might have been able to deliver the engraved units, but decided not to.
Oh well... live and learn. In years past all I've heard about are long lines and disappointed customers for Apple products on launch day, so I decided to pre-order. It turns out the retail end wasn't bad at all this time around.
As for the engraving, I have a specific reason for having done it, but I don't think I'd have it done again (especially if this foolishness with shipping is the result!
