The difference is the the web and technology 8 years ago vs today is dramatically different. Focus on the present. Arguing about concerns over the past seems as a means to deflect.

The other difference is that the resolution just passed and signed by Trump not only removes the rule but prohibits the FCC from issuing more rules.

so you have nothing to say of relevance - no surprise.

A) I'm not a fan of Trump
B) You didn't either

Same here. I just joined with PIA VPN service. $40/year. Been using it for a few days now. So far, it's been pretty reliable.
I use it on my router and wired up a raspberry pi homekit solution to turn off when I tell it to (for things like Netflix).

The FCC rules on internet privacy were written NOT to block Google from collecting ALL THE USER DATA. it was designed so that ISPs had to ask permission to collect it. Google wrote the rule so that they could collect user data, and if you disagree they can play the game that "you're against Internet Privacy."

George Soros has put $72 million since 2006 into this. Them saying "the GOPs are against it" is all disinformation.

Because I value privacy. I recognize that many people are ok with what the government is doing, but after leak after leak of our information, my summer project to remove as many accounts as possible and protect my information as much as possible.

I'm not against protecting your own privacy at all, but I'm just pointing out that had it not been for Obama enacting the policy and Trump dismantling it, you wouldn't be thinking of using a VPN at all in the first place unless of course, you stopped paying for a vpn as soon as the Obama policy was enacted.

Lastly... the article makes a statement about your financial information and SSN number... how the hell are they going to do this as I would never input this data unless I have a secure connection. So that seems like a scare-bait statement.

It's not scare-bait. Your contract for your internet service is not anonymous. The data your ISP has on you comes not only from your browsing logs but from the account information they have collected about you in the process of installing and billing for your internet service (plus whatever else you contract to buy from them, like phone service, cable TV etc). They know where they installed it, they know where to bill for service, a contact phone number; they know if you pay with a credit card, check, online banking (ACH) transfer etc.

Then as to the logs, they know something of at least your email setups just from your browsing history. If you use the mail addresses that come with your internet service, then they may know a lot more about you depending on your mail client and encryption options.

Whatever else info about you that they don't take directly from you when you make a service contract with your ISP, they may have acquired from a third party, e.g. you may have provided them your SSN or driver's license number, and you were probably informed when you signed up with them that they would run a credit check on you.

Yet people happily sign up for a google account, use gmail (they read your e-mails and show you ads based on content FFS), use android pay (you put in your credit cards, billing addresses, etc.), etc. Replace that with the Apple equivalents if you want. Either way, what was repealed wasn't the answer.

I don't care who the heck forbids a company to sell our data. I want someone to do it at the federal level and it looks like there is exactly zero intent to do that. All this bill did, past repealing an order that was to take effect in Dec 2017, was to make it clear that it's not going to be the FCC that prohibits such sales. Stay tuned for further efforts to strip out data privacy the better for corporate use thereof.

So back to what I take away as a bottom line on SJ Res 34: All but 15 Republicans in the House went for this bill, the Senate passed it on a party line as well, and Trump signed it. That is what I will remember: The GOP (except for the lonely 15 Republican Congressmen who voted NO) do not want any companies to need your consent to sell your data.

People die all over the world, everyday, from Islamic Muslim terrorist. To say otherwise is an out an out lie and an insult to the victims families.

George Bush, a Christian, said "God" told him to invade Iraq. Latest figures say around 1m innocent people were killed because of it.
Thoughts?

"Privacy advocates like the American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation opposed the rollback of the law and have argued that privacy protections are desperately needed to keep consumers safe. "

Because they haven't been safe for the last 25 years?

If the only thing a machine is capable of is destruction, I think it's inevitable that it will eventually destroy itself. It's only a question of how much damage happens along the way. People do have some say about that, regardless of how it looks. At base level, these fools are the employees. The people are the boss. The only real challenge is in getting a vast majority to agree on any damned thing. But I think that spotlight goes a long way.
Do you feel like the boss?

Do you think the People feel like the boss?

Saw this in passing.

What's new? History repeats itself. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Not really. Arguably I owe Snowden more of a debt than Obama. I'm now more aware of what goes on the internet and what I do on the internet. However, unfortunately, because of this new law, I have to be more vigilant than I ever have on what passes through my castle's walls. It's all about the 4th amendment. I don't believe this law is lawful - it surpasses what is called a reasonable expectation of privacy.

I can't wait to see Trump gone. Not like Pence is any better. It's going to be a rough ride ahead no matter what.

That's just it. This isn't really a Trump policy. It's a REPUBLICAN policy to sell out the middle and lower classes in favor of the top 1%. Trump can't sit still long enough to listen to a national security issue let alone some crap about "privacy" for the normal guy. The man didn't know whether he was a Democrat or a Republican for the past couple of decades because he didn't understand there was a difference seeing as he couldn't pay attention long enough to find out! They probably told him he was signing a piece of fan mail or something. Get rid of Trump and all you have left is PURE REPUBLICAN steal from the middle class and give to the RICH. That's ALL they care about.

What really amazes me is how they get the votes to become elected. They represent literally 1% of the nation (the ultra-rich). You cannot get elected with just that 1% of the vote. They get more votes by LYING to different groups of people, especially historically the religious people, who sadly are often mislead quite easily (hence the Bible talks of "sheep"). But how can ANYONE really believe these people are religious?

Jesus taught to love your fellow brothers, take care of them and give to the poor. If you really want to follow him, he taught to give everything you own to the poor.

Republicans teach to wipe out welfare, drop taxes for the rich and ship middle class jobs to a slave or sweatshop labor country so they can get richer!

WHAT FRACKING PART OF THAT DON'T SOME OF YOU COMPREHEND??? Is it the abortion issue? What Republican EVER got rid of that in the past half century? It's a smokescreen! They don't really care one way or the other as long as the gravy train keeps stopping at their houses (plural).

Change every law until laws are evil (in D&D this was called Lawful Evil). Republicans follow Goebbels' advice on propaganda (negative things repeated in the news are eventually believed to be true by the 'common' people). But even so, not all Republicans are fascists! But thanks to Trump, you've got the former KING of Breitbart (so-called "alt-right") News as Trump's right-hand man (and sadly he's not a moron like Trump is; he has a PLAN and let me clue you in. It's not about raising up minorities and poor people). However, unless the man suddenly decides to stick a swastika on his shoulder SOME people can't seem to figure out what "alt-right" is all about. It's like Clark Kent putting on his big glasses. Suddenly, he's not Superman! (face palm). It's just "alt-right" which sounds like "all right". THAT is what propaganda comes down to. People fall for slogans and labels all the time, particularly when they're negative against the other guy.

Maybe if some of you spent more time paying attention in history class instead of throwing paper wads you might have seen this coming. Perhaps when Putin's face is on Mt. Rushmore and Bannon gets some camps set up for all those he hates, MAYBE, JUST MAYBE it will finally dawn on you what's really happening. Then again, maybe not.

You have never applied for credit cards? Or filled out a doctor office form online?

I wonder if he mails his taxes in US mail with a social security number and bank account number. Or does he just trust HR block with his ss number

So, this smoke screen is because you concede to the argument that your fellow liberals look foolish and are screaming the sky is falling, when it really isn't ?

I don't think you understand the law, why it was passed, the law it appealed, what laws that have been in place since 84, nor your ISP's privacy policy.

However, yes, you should be vigilant about what passes through your castle's walls.

So you're saying everyone should be as poor as Kansas instead of as rich as California?

Poor, but not bankrupt, vs "rich" but will go bankrupt because of dependency on the Feds.

the globalists need to win! trump is a disaster

So what exactly did the order say and do ? Please tell me.

Which ones are double dipping ? It appears most claim that they don't.

Oh, but that doesn't coincide with the liberal agenda, so we will ignore it.

There're not funneling traffic. Again, nothing has changed. Most people don't realize that Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime detect when you're using a VPN and won't work.

How's that ???

If I make you pay for a service and then sell your private data for monetary gain that is double dipping. If they want to provide me free service in return for taking my usage data and selling it that would be another discussion.
[doublepost=1491351382][/doublepost]
Yeah... I guess I can opt out of Google, but hard to opt out of searching... and I'm sure Bing, yahoo and the rest of them do the same as google when it comes to using your search info.

Since Trump is just stopping a law that has not taken affect yet, doesn't that mean that things stay the same as they are now? This all seems like a "sky is falling" discussion when in reality it's a "the sky is the same as it was yesterday" situation.

Duck duck go or go incognito should be good enough in most of these situations. Incognito is probably a little tricky because they can still tell who you are.

Citizens should be asking more from the government to protect their privacy. I shouldn't have to buy a VPN to not be spied on.

Except which ISPs double dip ? Someone earlier on here all ready listed a half dozen ISPs that state that they don't sell your data. Why do we need a corrupt law that gives the Feds and Google/Facebook more power ?

It's the Feds that you need to be afraid of, not your ISP. There are laws that have been on the books since the mid 80's that limit what can be sold. Medical and financial information for one.

Except which ISPs double dip ?

Verizon was found to track users via super cookie without user permission and was fined for it.

Someone earlier on here all ready listed a half dozen ISPs that state that they don't sell your data.

You actually believe ISPs? They want to be Google and Facebook by selling ad space. They're not satisfied with just selling you internet access.

Why do we need a corrupt law that gives the Feds and Google/Facebook more power?

I can stop using Google and Facebook (which I have), but I can't leave my ISP because it's the only one available. To top it all off my ISP can see every single site I visit.

And it was all done without Obama's Power Grab Privacy Law

You actually believe ISPs? They want to be Google and Facebook by selling ad space. They're not satisfied with just selling you internet access.

Selling ad space and selling personal data/profiles/usage are two different things. Now, how targeted are those ads, that's my issue. If an ISP states that they don't sell your information, they can't, that's current law. See Verizon above.

I can stop using Google and Facebook (which I have), but I can't leave my ISP because it's the only one available. To top it all off my ISP can see every single site I visit.

I don't use Google services either, but there is this nasty invasion thing called Add Sense, and its all over the web. Everywhere. :(

Every ISP can see every single site that you visit. So can uncle Obama. Your ISP has 10 million subscribers, 3.5 million of them are looking at porn, and believe me, there's probably a million others along with you looking at hairy women (or men). Somebody is not sitting there watching you.*

*unless you set off a trigger...

So, this smoke screen is because you concede to the argument that your fellow liberals look foolish and are screaming the sky is falling, when it really isn't ?
That's a really bizarre way to interpret my post. If I may use bullet points to tackle it, for the required clarity;
- Extremist Islam folks do horrible things. But sometimes some "people" just want to be racist. Where's the dislike from those types about George Bush and his Christian-based terrorism. Imagine if Allah or God told Assad to start a war in America that results in 1m innocent deaths.
- I said the sky is falling? I offered a counterpoint to a daft racist comment. If you'd like to talk about other points please let me first offer them up rather than jumping straight to your reply to fictional words.
- I'm liberal? Even if I were, the definitions and beliefs of such change depending on where one lives. I don't live in America. I understand it's an easy way to argue when one lumps people together into groups, and then applies their own rules to that group. But I find that counterproductive and I always wonder about folk who do such things.
