Suppose the new MBP's do come out with an update feature I don't like (the chicklet keyboard is the first the comes to mind)...does Apple keep previous generation macs around when they release a newer model? Just want to know if I'll have my options open.

You will be able to buy them cheaper in the Refurb Store. But no, they don't stock "new" last-gen Macs.

So when the impending updated MBPs are released, all current MBPs that are not sold - Why wouldn't I be able to purchase one of those as oppose to one in the Refurb store?

Basically my concern is waiting on this update and then not wanting to purchase it if it is a chicklet keyboard (sounds petty for it's a deal breaker for me). But I don't want to make that assumption and purchase an MBP now.

Apple doesn't designate "older model" or "clearance" sales. All excess units are placed into the refurbished store because it's the easiest way to clear inventory.

So, after an update, your chances of getting an unused older model computer from the refurbished store are better but not guaranteed.

However, if it's important to you, try a store like Amazon or MacMall; they usually carry older models for a longer period than Apple's refurbished store.

- Make people buy a MBP because of the "stupid" added features such as Multitouch (for which I remind trackpad was not elarged) and make them buy once again a redesign MBP (with also a larger trckpad).

it is impossible for the MBP to have a larger trakpad at this moment. Take off the casing and you will find the area around the trackpad is completely used up. They would have to shift things around to make room for a larger pad. They might make the pad larger with a redesigned model but i doubt it.

I have just ordered a penryn MBP and I am not bothered about any new revision at all. Reason is I need it now, and waiting just isn't an option for me. Even if a case re-design was released it would simply not bother me because I think its stunning.

I think they are going to do an update this summer. It happened with the macbooks this year. They did an update in November 07 and then February 08.

The new intel platform will probably mean that the macbook pros get slimmed down a bit.

If you mean the casing how? take alook at the ports, the only thing that could slim down is the lid/screen
and then on the 17'' there could be warping issues

As much as i'd love to see new MBP's this summer, i also really wanted to see a G5 Powerbook, and well that never happened so you can either keep waiting with the chance that what you want may never come, or you can seize the day and buy a new computer the choice is yours.

actually when this last penryn update was made they had a "clearance" section where new Merom MBPs were discounted.

id like to point out that, minor updates are guided by intel now, the 45nm prossors are now defacto on almost all systems out their as intel have pushed the shift to the new prossor asap.

the next release on their roadmap thats worthy to note is the Nehalem arcitecture in a few months for server procssors q4 08 for high end desktop and early 09 for laptops and consumer desktops

its also worthy to note that this is speced to be a 3 gig quadcore mobile system

Hmm, interesting. That's quite a departure from Apple's previous practice. Perhaps they had too many units left over and decided it would be more practical to have a clearance on them.

ya I'm not sure why they did it. I was surprised to see it myself.

I'm sure you guys have all seen, but it sounds like there really is a more legitimate than normal chance we'll see a redesign this June/July/August.

I'm hoping for a user replaceable hard drive as my number 1 want, and my second big one is a better cooling system (so you can actually push the hardware for games and Folding @ Home and things without it seeming like it's going to explode and melt).

i think they will be announced in june... then told you can order them now and have them delivered in july, and backordered until august from the june orders, then apple will miss it's july target and everything will be pushed back a month.

So yea Sept.

Hey i'm a realist! what do you want?

New MB ASAP please!

- Metal Case
- LED Display
- DVD-Burner standard on the low end
- Multi-Touch Track pad.

That would be compelling enough for me to buy one for my SO in an instant. I really want to get her on a Mac.

For me, I'm waiting for Nehalem MBP. So whenever next year (the sooner the better)

well, apple should release all-new MBs and MBPs.
but i dont think this will happen in June.
Probably June will be the "3G iPhone" month.
so maybe we'll have to wait till august or september.
though i really need a macbook, i think i can wait till then.:D

I think we're all used to Apple's normal time table, but now that Intel is pushing fast adoption I could almost bet money WWDC will yeild a new MBP.

ya but they'll probably be a slient event. See there is a high probability of a slight MBP redesign because it is the oldest of all the designs (besides the MacPro).

I would say the chances are pretty good. It was last June when the MBPs saw an upgrade and on July 6 I bought mine. They were upgraded a few months ago again.

I would wait for it. The board is significantly smaller than the SR boards (Which Penryn uses), so up until now they haven't really had much to work with as far as a redesign.

Not that it matters, but DDR3 could be used in the MBP's, which would look nice on paper, even if it doesn't translate into an actual performance boost.

Nehalem is still where it's at, so if you don't NEED a computer soon, wait.

In fact, here is my current upgrade plan since everyone cares so much :p

Buy a Mac Mini when the new one comes out (Penryn, etc). Sell iMac G5 since I replaced it with a gaming PC back in May 2007. Dad takes my G4 to replace his G3. When the Nehalem Mac Pro comes out, I'll replace the Mini with that and give the mini to my dad. That's 2/3 computers updated, great. When the Nehalem MBP's come out, I'll give the gaming PC to my mom to run autoCAD, and replace it with a MBP.

Wait 8 years, repeat. :D

wow, nice, sounds like you've got a pretty solid and well though out plan...

NO! This is a new CHIPSET. It has nothing to do with the motherboard at all. The motherboard could be smaller, it could be bigger, it could be exactly the same size. All we're getting in June is a CHIPSET update.

The rumors are pointing towards Apple updating the chassis, but that has nothing to do with this minor bump-they could have done this last year had they wanted to.

Nehalem is still where it's at, so if you don't NEED a computer soon, wait.

Yeah, what stinks is I've been waiting for years, and I might still end up waiting past the middle of this year until we get Intel's next-gen CPU :D

so basically, what kind of updates could we possible see with the upcoming montevina update?

case design?
hardware upgrade (speed, etc.)?

if there are any hardware upgrades, would they be considerably noticeable? or would they be quiet updates like the ones we saw in late february with the penryn 2 chipset?
