probability of MacBook Pro release in June, 2008

Anyone else afraid June will be another iPhone/SDK event? I'm afraid I'm having doubts about redesigns in June, though I'd be delighted to see them.

so basically, what kind of updates could we possible see with the upcoming montevina update?

case design?
hardware upgrade (speed, etc.)?

if there are any hardware upgrades, would they be considerably noticeable? or would they be quiet updates like the ones we saw in late february with the penryn 2 chipset?

The only thing we're getting for sure in terms of hardware is the new chipset that allows for one speed grade faster front side bus. Other than that, they COULD upgrade the GPU, the case design, whatever, but none of that has anything to do with Intel's new chipset.

so by case redesign could that possibly mean ditching the aluminum casing? i really hope not cause i really like the way it is now :(

Possibly, but I don't think anyone's expecting that. Most likely it would just be "different". I'm hoping any redesign would a) have much better cooling so the hardware can be pushed, and b) have a user replaceable hard drive.

I'm guessing it'll be VERY similar to the current model. probably just a touch slimmer (Like just a touch), maybe a redesign of the layout incorporating the user replaceable hard drive that so many people want (though i could care less) and I'm almost 100% sure the plastic edging is going to be gone.

oh yes and it'll definitely be aluminum again because apple is having an obsession with environmental friendliness and aluminum is more recyclable than plastic.

I concur...

Just talked to a friend of an apple employee(not one of those clueless or seemingly clueless apple reps), and they say that they are going to push back the release of the new line of macbooks and macbook pro's because they are working on incorporating blu-ray into the mix. Also said, the reason for working with blu-ray is because Apple wants to compete with the other major laptop brands in the laptop blu-ray market.

In other news... I agree with TimeWaster, the design should be similar. One of the theories that has been going around is that it will be modeled after the MacBook Air(ie the rounded edges, but not the limited I/O). One of the major things to look at is the thickness of the screen. With the new LED screens being put into the last update, the lids can be a whole lot thinner(like the MBA). With the new Montevina layout being smaller and thinner, the MB's and the MBA's will undoubtly thinner by probably around a quarter of an inch, maybe even more. There is even speculation that the MB's are going to shed the their plactic skins for aluminum ones for that whole eco-friendly stint apple is pushing these days. One source even indicated that the whole line will look pretty much the same, save the features of each model and such. The whole line should be thinner and sleeker. As for the touchpad, its a given that it will be bigger.

Bummer, I just hope they're not delayed too much. I passed up the last update because I don't need it until college this coming fall. But by July I'll be itching to get a new one. I think though, I'll wait if I have to until the fall. I've already waited through Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, and I will through may, and Jun. Why not another 5 if I have to? But I really hope I don't. It'd be nice to get settled in w/ a new MBP for the start of college.

Another friend of a friend story. Nice.

That all sounds good BUT Bluray I suspect is still very expensive for a portable device, and not something we will see this year.

Its a nice post but Apple reps don't know anything. Why would your friend's friend know any more then the folks at MR?

Anyways... I am going to get my MBP June 2nd or so, within 14 days of WWDC. That way I will be within my 14 days to return the laptop and get the new MBP if anything is announced. I cannot imagine anything happening in 2008 major like a laptop overhall if nothing is even mentioned in WWDC. I think January 15th will be the big reveal, but too long for me. I gotta have the laptop no later then September, and preferably early June.

I cannot find a laptop that looks as good as the MBP... aren't they good enough? What else would you like them to do? Why do we need blue ray on laptops. It is just going to cost an extra $400 and the difference in quality will only be noticeable if connected to an HDTV 32"+. Waiting for the MBP to become 5% faster? Are you going to notice that? Sure Montevina is going to be a big update, but so will Nahelm and ____ and ____, and oh don't get me started about ____. Stop waiting for the next best thing and buy your friggin laptop. Unlike regular PC notebooks, MBP's do not go out of style. Why does the Powerbook, a laptop made 4+ years ago, still look so snazzy today? And if you buy your MBP now and then it is updated in 6 months and you cannot handle not buying it, just sell your current set up and lose $3-400. When apple updates products, they are not forcing you to buy the next best thing you know :).

Redesign?

I dont think they will redesign anything in the up coming months for a few a key reason

product difference

Macbook-white or black i guess its the step up from the mac mini kinda basic but still a mac:)

Macbook air-size of the macbook just what 2 pounds lighter? no cd drive etc meant for travelers the main idea on how it brings all the macs together are its al and has a backlit keyboard

Macbook pro- the grand daddy of em all most power they can fit in there its everything like the air just with the common stuff and a bigger screen

thats the thing they need different products if the macbook gets a new design there will be less difference in each product. Im sure if someone can have the look and backlit keyboard of the pro on the macbook they would sell even more

AMEN!

TimeWaster- I just sold my mac pro because i wanted portability. I have been getting screwed in the ass for over a month by paypal and I'm still waiting for the three grand. Not having a computer is killing me, I also hope they aren't delayed too long either. Getting a new MBP before next semester would be clutch. Especially since I need it for all the programming I would do.

Hexonxonx- it was a friend of a friend story, but its a lot better than anybody else has been puttin up. The name of the site is MACRUMORS.COM, not MACCONFIRMEDNEWS.COM.

flamebourne- quad core laptops would be nice, i agree, but i will def need my MBP before that, ill get that quad core next time around:)

aswitcher- that is the only thing that is in the back of my mind about blu-ray in a MBP too. But you can always hope. Hopefully WWDC will tell all.

As i previously stated, the person who my friend knows ISN'T AN APPLE REP... HE IS A TECH PERSON, someone who probably knows loads more about apple than the reps; and rumors take time to circulate, the person whom I got this information from had recently learned this(within the last couple of days), besides, not everyone responds to this particular site or even this thread for that matter.

as for the blu-ray, I would definitely pay $400 more for blu-ray support, for a couple of speculating reasons.

1)I have a 42" flatscreen, so movies would look great on it.

2)If they happened to ship it as a blu-ray burner, imagine the possibilities with the amount of storage on a single disc (A single-layer disc can hold 25GB. A dual-layer disc can hold 50GB. To ensure that the Blu-ray Disc format is easily extendable (future-proof) it also includes support for multi-layer discs, which should allow the storage capacity to be increased to 100GB-200GB (25GB per layer) in the future simply by adding more layers to the discs.).

I am also waiting because of the fact that they are switching logic boards(w/ those new Montevina chips). I have dealt personally with 4 bad logic boards in MB's and MBP's and the chance to wait for a brand new board that might just be a little bit better is not only data security, its also peace or mind and investment protection. That alone should make it worth the wait.

As for the new design, the current one is pretty sick, but the chance that the new design looks just a little bit cooler only adds to my curiosity.

AJ1BostonMass- I disagree with you about product difference. My general theory about the way the whole line is head as far as design makes sense. By cutting back the number of different raw materials they have to pull from around the world, they are saving money. It also leaves room for expansion because of the cut back of the cost of materials(possibly even better features or options). Steve Jobs is always looking to pinch pennies. Look at his salary, he pays himself $1 a year to avoid having to pay taxes on it, why wouldn't he want to cut product costs for more profit. The design itself, no matter how much it changes wont affect how the product sells. Its still an apple, and it will always be the hottest bag on the market.

P.S.- My g/f is from Andover, and Ive only been to Boston twice, but its where I want to live for the rest of my life. Great city man.

I did not mean to degrade you friend's friend. Regardless of his affiliation with apple, he is still a Apple Representative. Perhaps he knows a little something that others do not, but as you admitted, it is nothing more than a rumor.

I on the hand am speaking from experience. I don't plan to wait the next 'big update' The current machines are quite capable. You have listed several features that appeal to you. I just do not think apple would put blu ray in their next laptops. If they did, I can imagine a lot of problems as well. You have your reasons, but most people like me just need a laptop and are just waiting because someone said something better is coming.

What if you buy your laptop in June 2 but then they dont update it until August.. or easily after 2 weeks is up for return.. then your plan is backfired.. also if you feel so strongly about what you just explained.. why not just purchase now? :D

Could I ask why your still waiting for the 3 grand from paypal??

I just sold a mac pro at $4150 just 3 days ago and the money fully transfered over to my bank account as of today and I shipped out the mac pro.. I've never gotten any problems with paypal but just curious on what happened that you got screwed?? I'm glad that the payer used instant payment instead of a credit card where I did hear about scams using credit cards and paypal with holding your machine until you reimburse paypal and the original buyer...

Also I agree with you, I wanted portability/power and the best way to get it is of course the macbook pro. The mac pro on my sig was very fast and very nice but for me the mbp was more than fast enough for everything that I do. This is why I decided not to wait or focus on for the next revision and set my upgrade higher (nehalem or past nehalem so that I can keep this mbp longer). As long as it does what I want to do very well there is no need for faster/newer machines and just should enjoy it! I even know people that still use 6-7 year old powerbooks/powermacs and still fine with it!

I love the setup for the 23" ACD + the macbook pro as a desktop for more screen space and just unplugging to take my mbp along anywhere in the house or outside. It felt like a huge waste of money for having a 4k machine just sitting there while I used the mbp on my bed or couch... or the other way around using the mac pro while the mbp was getting neglected.. and knowing that either machine would do whatever I wanted to.. so I stuck with the 2.5" macbook pro (for portability when I need/want it) and kept my 23" ACD plugged into the mbp with a 1tb seagate barracuda external hdd in the owc mercury pro with fw800/esata to keep all my music/movies in + extracting huge files I drag it via fw800 to the 1tb seagate and let it do its job and works like a charm!

Since the introduction of the first gen MBPs running Core Duos, Apple and Intel has made steps forward, but not leaps like when they introduced the core duos.

My first gen mbp is still serving me well (though I would like it to support 4gb of ram) and I'm gonna hold off till, hopefully, early 2009 for the quad core blu-ray mbps to arrive.

I can see it now (2009 Mbp):

- Intel Quad-Core Inside (1.4ghz x4!)
- Blu-Ray superdrive (due to Sony winning the format wars)
- GPU? (I want to know!)
- 2gb (standard)
- 150gb hd
- Physical specs: thinner by borrowing tech and parts from mba (i guess 33% thinner)
- usb 3.0?

Hmm i never thought of it that way I can understand where it could work

ya Boston is great i wish i still lived there but its my hometown gotta love it:D

thinkband- just out of curiosity, what problems do you foresee with the blu-ray in a MBP?

Well I cannot see into the future, but rev 1 products always have something wrong with them. I dunno why but they just do. We are also talking about new technology for apple, bluray. Which is why when the new mbp in the new case comes out (2009?), there will be many problems, which will be fixed in rev 2 and rev 3.

jjahshik32
If that happens, like I noted, I will see if the laptop features anything that really interests me. If it does, I will sell my MBP and get the newest model. Most likely it will not bother me to keep my 'dated' MBP. Why not buy it now? Well I have no use for it right now. I could definitely use it early June, which is when I am planning to purchase it, unless significant rumors come out of the air.

If you get a rev A product in June though and it goes bad within the 1st year (or 3 for those like me getting the extended plan) then they'll give you the latest MBP which might just be the new quad cores from next Jan. Either way, you can't go wrong.

I'm waiting because i don't NEED it now, so why not wait until the latest until I NEED it.

I would say quite likely. Look at the US and UK refurb stores. Both are showing discounts at around 30%. This normally indicates getting rid of some stock before new stuff comes out
