humor, huh?

Oh, yes... 'humor.' That great explanation that's supposed to forgive every pretentious, obnoxious, drunken statement from the mouths of self-important front men. Apparently, Bono's learned a lot from all the politicians he's rubbed elbows with over the years. Never apologize. Just explain it away.

Samsung is involved with many charity programs, such as Hope for Children that is a US program. They also provide disaster relief, like ~$10M in Sichuan.

Maybe Apple should donate to help people who are suffering from leukemia after working at Samsung factories.

Did you try using Google to answer the rest of your question. Apple's contributions, next to Microsoft's, are laughable. EVERYONE knows Steve was a tight wad and Tim is trying to undo that image, and even at that he can't do it fast enough.

In Steves defence he had no real choice about it in the early days of his return, the operating budget was very low there wasn't the extra revenue to afford an extravagance of RED and alike especially when fighting to keep your company afloat which has been brought to the brink of ruin.

later on though there could of been more contribution and that is a fair point, my only reasoning would be an almost like paranoia by Steve thinking of how Apple had been when he came back due to wasting funds and he was determined to build a strong base and it was only when Apple found new success and was regaining sustainability that charitable donations became viable.

Thants how I try to see it anyway.

I watched Bono's comments, thought they were an intriguing glimpse into the behind-the-scenes way things like this are handled, got a few laughs out of it and then came to MacRumors to see people expressing outrage about Bono insulting Steve. (???)

It seemed to me that Bono was speaking in admiration of how steadfast Steve Jobs was and yet how he found a way to compromise. I saw nothing in Bono's comments to get outraged by.

FFS, people sure are sensitive about the most idiotic things.

I am misunderstanding this, so perhaps I need a better explanation.

From what I see, and I think I must be wrong.
Apple spend virtually nothing, in real terms, making a few items in red colour.

These are auctioned off as something special as they are red, other people pay load of money for them, and this money goes to charity.

Is this right? It can't be.

Kudos to Apple. I wonder why you never hear about charity programs from Samsung, Google, Microsoft, etc....

Bill Gates Foundation

Google gives is setting out a plan to deliver free internet, with their Internet Balloon, they also do boatloads of other stuff. Visit Google.org

Although I like supporting Project Red, the leather iPhone case just gets dirty way to quickly. It's a shame that I had to exchange it for black. The red looks so much better.

Two things about publicity...

+ There's NO publicity like FREE publicity!

+ There's no such thing as bad publicity.

= millions of dollars of free ads for Apple, (product) RED, and U2's back catalog :D

It's kinda right. There are also red iPods and stuff that aren't auctioned off but are just sold to the average consumer for some extra amount. I don't see what's so surprising about it.

Any time an organization finds itself "explaining" the comments of some individual, you know that whatever they're about to say is not at all what the individual meant. If the individual meant something else, they would have corrected themselves right there and then. Bono meant every word, and it was not a joke.

I love the (RED) campaign. I buy those versions of products whenever possible and encourage you all to do the same.

Sure they look cool, but if you only want to give money to an AIDS research charity (or any charity for that matter), it's better to just donate money rather than trusting that the extra money you pay all goes to the charity.

A great thing but I would point out that it is Bill Gates doing it personally and not Microsoft the company.

Yes, I've already been hit with this one a couple of times. See post #40. Click that link of corporate philanthropy ranked by who gave most. It has lots of corporate names in there including Google, Intel, Microsoft, even Dell, Texas Instruments and Cisco. Slide across and you can easily see who gives the most, ranked by size of the giving.

Note also what I wrote there about Project Red, none of which is meant to put Apple down- quite the contrary. But at the same time, it doesn't appear they are head & shoulders above every other corporation or tech corporation in this department either. So I applaud Apple's great efforts with Project Red and other things but I don't stomp on significant giving by Apple's competitors nor try to spin it like those competitors should try to be more like Apple in this area (also quite the contrary based on what you'll discover when you visit that link).

PocketSand (above) answered this pretty well. Yes, they make some special items (like the one-of-a-kind Red Mac Pro http://www.cultofmac.com/251453/jon...-red-mac-pro-for-project-red-charity-auction/ that was auctioned off at a huge price) and they make special editions of some basic consumer products like iPods and accessories: http://www.apple.com/product-red/ In the latter, people like us buy those products and Apple donates a chunk of that revenue to Project Red.

That's generous of Apple as they don't have to do anything like that and Apple's products do sell very well, so they are costing themselves the profits of all of what they donate to that cause. If they didn't participate, those profits would add to their corporate profits.

When talking about RED Macrumors always forgets the red iPod Touch which is awesome. I think Apple may release the RED iPhone 6.
