It's also condescending when people imply that others are "uneducated consumers" for not waiting for the second version, which everyone knows won't come out for another year. Not saying the original poster said that, but it's usually associated with those kinds of comments.
There's nothing wrong with waiting until a device meets your needs before buying it, but there's also no smug genius in the revelation that version 2 will be better than version 1.

EXACTLY

People who post about how smart they are for waiting for V2 are just trying to put down those who didn't wait, as if only the idiots jump in first. The cycle continues forever, and someone could just as easily say "I'm glad I got version 1 because I've enjoyed the hell out of owning this device for the past 6 months, while you haven't".

I think people that missed out v1 wanted just to see how the product was going to be, plus awating for extra features that they expected earlier.

They just making sure that they are going to buy what they expect.

They are not holding forever because the next is better, they hold for once because was the first of its kind.

I am waiting for the 2nd generation. Here is what I want:
- More memory (1st gen mem is a joke!) or..
- mini USB or card reader than I can add the memory I want (much better but less probable);
- mini HDMI? (I doubt)
- front camera of course!
- better multitasking with iOS4.3 (still have to see it...)
- better screen resoluton (a little better, retina is not likely)

Thing that can go away...
- don't care about the lock screen... will go away
- 30pin connector... we need to sync wirelessly c'mom! ok, the pin can be useful for standing on the base or connecting to keybord.

Thats true but... The first one of anything to the 2nd is a bigger jump than the 2nd to the third. Think about the iPhone 3g to the 3gs. Not THAT much. The ipod touch 2g to the 3g. not THAT much

No the biggest jump is always from 0 to 1. :D

After that it gets unpredictable. It took to version 4 of iPhone/Touch to get a resolution increase. I think iP4 is the biggest jump of the series (other than 0-1).

Functionally I don't expect much in iPad 2. Camera and mild speed bump, with the same screen resolution.

I often hang on to my gear for a long periods of time, skipping more than one generation (My GPS is a Garmin eMap, about 10 years old), but skipping the very first generation means you have nothing to use while you wait.

Pick up the first gen iPad at release and you could probably use it for a year and sell it for $150 less than you paid for it when Gen 2 comes out, or just keep using it until Gen 3... One year of use worth $150? Saving $150 to twiddle your thumbs for a year waiting for a front camera?

As a current owner of v1, if the recent patent rumor about the carbon fibre body is true, I'll be first in line to pick up one of those bad boys. The only thing better than shiny apple toys.....is shiny carbon fibre apple toys.: D

I'll wait for the official word from Apple, but a front facing camera is pretty much a shoe-in...

i dunno it seemed like a lifetime before copy/paste was introduced, if there's no camera i wouldn't be surprised. pissed off, yes, but surprised, no.

took my 3G iPad to Italy recently and for 5 Euro purchased a new SIM plus a data plan for 3 Euro. So easy and cheap to do. Just check out a store that will do it before you go as WiFi spots are very hard to come by.

I need following from iPad V2:

- smaller and lighter device, about 6" to 7"
- phone feature!
- dual core cpu and more ram
- full web, meaning Flash support
- less of a lock down system
- less of iTunes dependency
- expandable storage via MicroSD or similar
- usb camera connector

There is more, but this will do for now... :)

That would all be great, but none of it is happening any time soon

Other than more ram and faster CPU i think you might be waiting a long time :p

Skip retina, give it Super AMOLED. I don't think retina will achieve the same resolution in such a large screen, Super AMOLED will be the next best thing, it's almost on par with retina.

I think there will be a resolution increase, however slight.

Increase in memory, perhaps storage, and maybe Apple will put the A6 chip in it.

Would be funny to see OSX Lion put on it since Lion seems like a Leopard and iOS hybrid. However, I know iOS is going to be the os of choice.

Thinner, no. Lighter, please for heavens sake.

Also, front and back camera, and not that .7MP crap. The iPad is the caddy of idevices and so it should get the best features of all devices.

Stop calling it "world mode". The world uses HSPA/GSM and the backwater regions of the US and ASIA use CDMA.

Practically every country in the "world" has carriers that support HSPA whereas very few countries still support CDMA actively, if at all.

I don't care about Verizon, Sprint, Metro PCS, Cricket or any other rinky dink virtual carriers. There are basically only two CDMA carriers in the US (Verizon and Sprint) and they even roam on each others networks when their own is not available somewhere. The rest of the list are "virtual" and use Sprint and/or Verizon infrastructure.

oh btw, ofcourse the iPad 2 will have a gyroscope!
And I think it'll have 1.5 times the pixels (something like 1440x1080 or 1600x1200)

And it'll have stereo speakers on 4 places so you'll have a stereo (gaming) experience in any position you hold it.

Id wait for the next lot of Android tablets. Or even the Playbook. I've heard bad things about the Galaxy Tab.

Yap... :)

I will skip Galaxy Tab V1 and either go for V2 or indeed PlayBook...

Android 3.0 is the way to go when it comes down to tabs anyway - so, hopefully, sometime mid 2011 I should have plenty to choose from.

Idea of Galaxy Tab is awesome though...

It covers everything from my 'need list' plus some more, but yes, V2 or similar alternative in few months time will be much better choice.

Humm,
I really want to wait for the iPad 2.0 but the latest $400 promo at TJ Maxx/Black Friday for 16gig iPad is enticing to jump in right away.

Yeah Gingerbread is a must for Android tablets. I heard Samsung didn't want to wait for it though :p

Why would Apple announce the iPad2 2 months before release? When have they ever announced subsequent hardware versions that far ahead of release? They only announce completely new products months before releasing it (like iPhone and first iPad). Once they announce the iPad2, it will be availabe that week (end of February is my guess).

And remember, this is not a contract-based machine. Apple does not have to wait exactly 12 months between each suscessive generation. With the slurry of tablets about to hit any minute, it's in Apple's best interest not to wait the full 12 months, but to release it in 10 or 11 months.

I listed how they released the iPad and MacBook Pro earlier this year. My guess was for an iPad v2 next April. Overall I'm just curious when and how they will introduce the iPad v2, Sandy Bridge Line, and a new iPhone in 2011. Which puts me in the same boat as a lot of people.
