A vocal minority is whining on the internet like they do after every Apple release. Yawn.

Jeff Johnson:

Those complaining about Apple’s current Mac lineup are not haters, they’re lovers. They’ve spent 10+ years and 5+ figures on Macs.

These aren’t Luddites who simply hate change. These are people who already had blank checks written to Apple but had to tear up the checks.

Jokes aside...

If Apple included the usual ports, started with 512GB storage, and a little bit lower price...
this whole backlash can be avoided but a $2300 for 256GB storage in 2016 is just a joke.

A lot of these people are living in the past. We are where Steve Jobs predicted we'd be, living in a post-PC era where the market for high-end traditional computer products is a niche within an already tiny niche.

What Tim and Apple are doing is absolutely right for the company. Those complaining and hating on Apple and Tim are broadly speaking living in the dark ages.
Really? So we take away a features and performance, increase the price and everything is ok?
You are right about one thing, this is absolutely right for the company. Its bottom line that is. I'm glad you have a bucket full of money to blindly piss away on style.

In other words... The same complaints people have had for decades about Apple.

"We don't need an expensive MP3 player. We need new Macs!"
- Apple ends up with the most iconic and best-selling music player of all time.

"Why is Apple building a phone? They should be building new Macs!"
- Apple ends up with the most iconic and best-selling phone of all time.

"What is great about an oversized iPod Touch? We want new Macs!"
- Apple ends up with the most iconic and best-selling tablet of all time.

"Who cares about a watch that nobody will wear? We care about the Macs we use every day!"
- Apple will end up with the most iconic and best-selling watch of all time.

- Apple builds a pro laptop with the fastest stock configuration, most beautiful screen, longest battery life, largest trackpad, best keyboard, fastest i/o, sleekest form factor, lightest weight, and best OS of any pro laptop in existence.
"Apple is doomed!! Apple doesn't care about the Mac anymore! Not nearly enough RAM. Too expensive. Can't plug in my phone that I didn't even want Apple to build in the first place without an adaptor. I'm never buying a Mac again."

Nothing else? Try coming up with a secure enclave for the Touch ID, and integrate its functionality into a standard desktop OS.
I am no engineer, but I can see what Apple did to the new Macbook Pro are not just "nothing else."
Yes, that's a cool feature, but clearly not one that I'd qualify as major.

I'm a big apple fan and love my iPhone and iPad and last year when I was buying a new computer, I considered getting a mac. I ended up getting a $750 dell laptop because the equivalent mac was more than twice the price for the same specs, limited compatibility for games and other things that I do, and I'd have to learn a new OS and deal with all that.

The main strike against these laptops is not the ports (which I think is Apple typically making things ahead of their time), nor the LED touch bar (which seems like it has potential) but that the cost:specs ratio is terrible. People need to use these machines to do stuff and paying more for less always feels really really bad.

I honestly see these Macbooks as concept computers that are pricey and have other issues now, but will be mainstream and copied by every other company within the next few years. It sucks that the early adopters have to pay the price (in terms of dongles and money) now so that everyone can reap the benefits later.

Call me old fashion but as a "professional" I need and expect USB and HDMI on my professional class of laptop. I like the portability of the new MacBook and USB-C support, but at the end of the day I value functionality over form. So I'll probably end up keeping my 2015 MacBook for a couple more years for my day to day and a Razer for data crunching.

I was one of those waiting for the new MBP. I have an old 2007 MBP so I guess every change for me is scifi. I have a 2013 MacPro that works fine. Super, to be honest.
I work in video, so I need power as water in the desert. In the last four years I used my MBP only to write, do some graphics work and nothing else. 4K world has accelerated the shortening of machines' lives. I am happy with this MBP because a I am already set with my MP and I needed right a powerful laptop. So on the complaining about the other updates: I understand but I am sure they will be announced within the end of the year. I am lucky I didn't need it.

On the complain about the new MBP I disagree: what you want more than a powerful machine that's light (quite) as a paper sheet? I really care about portability, my old laptop was good at the times but obviously odd now, I always looked forward to have an "air" with the power of a pro and looked at first unibody pro as too heavy, too much to be practical. Now the day I was waiting in some way is arrived: light, thin and powerful. Do you want 64gb? ok maybe but they explain that's against battery consumption. And I always laugh at my friends' pcs as they boost power but last less than 2 hours of battery as mine old 2007 still hold more. So I think it's better to have 10hrs battery than. Faster processor? ok, it could be. But it's not that slow, to me, compared to the new adored-by-pc-users Surface Pro that has the same specs on paper but has a lot of bad reviews by users who complain slow processing and bad battery life. And it costs a little less, not that much.

I have some minor complain about the loose of mag-safe which was an intelligent tool and the loss of the SD reader which seems to me to not take away that much space. The real complain for me is the price of market outside USA. But that's not Apple's fault. I live in a country that taxes memory devices so the more you put on a computer the more you pay. And we have 22%vat which is awful. And some more. So the difference between the pure currency change is 800€ more which is ridiculously high. But I think that Apple has well balanced the features for this product.
I can't wait (5 weeks, ah) to have it under my fingers.

The mainstream media is TOO SCARED to write anything against Apple or else they won't get tickets to next Apple event. But now their credibility is at stake. So what will those media houses like iAnandtech or iVerge choose? Apple or their website readers?

This. 100%, this. So-called reviewers are simply an extension of the Apple Marketing department and read like they've been pre-vetted by Apple. Reviewers are spineless to criticize given no tickets and no advanced product peaks of future products if they step out of line. Such is the power of Apple to this specific arena.

"Oculus founder Palmer Luckey has poured water on the idea of his Rift virtual reality headset supporting the Mac by saying that Apple doesn't make any computers powerful enough to run it.": http://www.theverge.com/2016/3/4/11159700/oculus-rift-mac-support-apple

"Apple CEO Tim Cook has expressed an interest in VR, saying on the company's most recent earnings call that "I don't think it's a niche. It's really cool and has some interesting applications." For the foreseeable future, though, Apple's Mac platform won't be able to play host to the most advanced implementations."

Needs more to be said?

As the Intel chip Apple needs for 32 Gb isn't ready [...] If Intel delivers an update allowing Apple to bring out a 32Gb MBP before I NEED to move on AND the surcost does not go any further, I'll upgrade then. Here's hoping...

Since Windows laptops from several manufacturers come with 32 GB RAM I cannot really buy the argument that Apple didn't have the choice of providing it.

I'd happily take a MBP that is 5% thicker or so, if that what it takes to keep the same battery life with a memory controller supporting 32 GB. Having those extra couple of millimetres shaved off doesn't really help me when the laptop cannot keep up with my everyday professional workflow.

If Apple wouldn't restrict macOS to their own hardware, mac sales would drop like a stone.
This! Mac may be to coolest looking computer, now even more so, but I HATE the idea of having to carry adapters everywhere I go. Not that bad for a super portable macbook intended to be used on the go, but absurd for the pro.

It doesn't seem like vocal minority this time. Yes, every update includes a round of folks complaining, but this seems different because we have Pc products that are embracing bold and exciting designs, we have Mac sales falling for the past couple of quarters. Apple has not touched the Mac Mini in 2 years, the Mac Pro in 3, and the MBP hasn't seen a major overhaul since 2012. The anticipation was high for Apple customers, and all we got was a thinner laptop with a touch bar. I'm not knocking the touch bar, but I think people wanted more across the board, i.e., not just an update to MBPs. Plus the actaul update to the laptop seemed a bit mediocre imo (they should have done more to improve the MBP).

Wait, so you want Apple to go back in time to do what almost led them to their own demise by licensing MacOS to third parties?

zealots

Not just Tim, but Phil, Joni and Eddy look like complete ignorant ghosts that live in another world.
They genuinely think that everything they create is great because it is Apple and they are great because they are Apple.
In fact they are a couple of misaligned borderliners (the above is close to the definition of borderline syndrome)
I felt so sad seeing grown up people self-fulfilled with something as archaic (and badly implemented) as TouchBar, completely disconnected from their customers that are eager for some serious stuff.
Just appalling.
I think the Touch Bar is a good idea. The FN key row is mostly wasted space today. Once it is in the hands of consumers we'll get a better sense.

Valid complaint, but it has literally always been this way with the Mac. Look at IBM's recent cost of ownership study, and you'll find that Apple computers are actually cheaper in the long run (on average) when things like software, service, and resale value are taken into account.

If you need more than the new MBPro, PRICE is not the problem; it's lack of POWER.

I would gladly pay over $5,000 US for an updated Mac Pro or MBP with 32 GB RAM. If you are making a living off this machine, spending an extra $1,000-$2000 every 3 years for your main tool (compared to a laptop) should not be a problem. Yes, it's a niche within a niche, but if Apple is one of the world's largest companies, with many billions in Cash, they ought to be able to do ALL of these things at once.

I sometimes need to auto-process a folder containing 10+ GB of hi-res photos, opening each one in Photoshop, downsampling it, converting it to CMYK or RGB, and then re-importing it into InDesign; or creating multiple hi-res PDFs of large books full of hi res images. I have several of these types of processes that run via a script or plugin, and having a faster CPU would speed up these tasks. I'd pay extra to speed those things up - but Apple's current products are not upgradeable. The old MacPro big aluminum tower was great - I could open the side, add RAM, hard drives, video cards - all within 5 minutes.

Apple needs to offer a machine that isn't meant to be used at a coffee shop. Those of us who need the power will pay the higher price.
I would not pay $5000 for 32GiB RAM. You can get that in a $500 machine.

A fair price for an MBP with consumer components that is upgradeable to 64GiB would be around $2500.

So you are saying "forget about Apple and move to a Windows computer, because Apple does give a **ck"

It's obviously a judgment call some people will need to make if Apple is no longer servicing their needs. You can whine about it on MacRumors all day and destroy the MacBook Pro forum with the same tired rants, or get on with your life and buy something that does meet your requirements.

Hmmmm how about let me suggest another option.

Give us the option for 32GB with the fine print telling us that we'd get 8 hours of battery life instead of 9. Done.

Like I said, I can let SD and HDMI go but I can not accept not a single USB-A. Sure USB-C is the future but their approach is so hamfisted. Guess Apple had a little too much courage in pushing ahead with a standard that we're not ready for.
It would be a lot less than 8 hours since they would need to use desktop RAM.
