Project G3: Getting Leopard on an Unsupported Mac

Build 9A321 runs ok on my Clamshell, I've installed it on my G5 then imaged to the G3 because it doesn't have a DVD drive. On first boot everything was crashing on dyld but running update_dyld_shared_cache in single user fixed that.

For some reason Finder was crashing, replaced it with the one from 9Z1554 and it now seems to be working.

Which is build 9Z1554?

I don’t know how I didn’t know about that one. Weird build number. Looks like it sits right between 9A283 and 9A303.
I haven’t screwed with any of this in a long time but I usually just look at the first page for updates. Looks like it hasn’t been updated in awhile because it doesn’t mention 9Z1554 at all, and still shows 9A321 as not working.
 
I've imaged an install of 9A321 if anyone wants to try and don't know how to run update_dyld_shared_cache. Fixed some crashes I found with OpenGL on my machine, disabled a QuartzCore function that was causing some crashes like Safari and "Get Info" in Finder. Also updated iTunes to 8.2.1 (iTunes 9 doesn't work and couldn't figure out why) and QuickTime to 7.6.4.

I just successfully installed 9A321 on a 900MHz 14” iBook G3. I installed normally using a PowerBook G4, I then replaced Finder with the one from 9Z1554. I didn’t boot into it all before doing that.

After that, I cloned it over to the G3 and started it up. It worked without having to go into single user mode and running update_dyld_shared_cache.

This build has quick look, and spaces. Quick Look is only available from the menu or the CMD+Y shortcut. I found that by pressing it out of habit.

Spaces works if enabled, but if you go into the spaces prefpane, system preferences crashes.

Actually, how I can use this on imac g3 with a usb stick? for installation!

USB is a pain. And it only has USB 1.1 so it would take hours if it worked at all. I’ve had success booting USB with other operating systems on PPC Macs but OS X doesn’t always work.

I would honestly just pick up a FireWire disk if you don’t have another Mac to use like I did. They’re old and not very expensive these days. If you’re in the PPC community as a hobby at all, you should really have one.

in fact this would be extremely difficult without another Mac, because you need an install of 9Z1554 in order to get the Finder app to replace the one in 9A321. I wouldn’t attempt this if all I had was a G3. You’d have to install one in order to get Finder for the other one.

If you really want to use USB, search USB booting in the search function on this site and set it to this specific forum. There’s been many posts about it.

You might be able to just flash a modified 9A241 installer to a USB and see if it boots. That build works pretty much out of the box on G3s

What I've done was booting into a Panther install disc and restored the image from USB to an HDD partition using disk utility since I can't boot anything from USB.

That image already contains the 9Z1554 Finder, patched OpenGL and QuartzCore so no need to install 9Z1554.

I was thinking it might’ve been your destination actually? A clamshell iBook vs a late model iBook G3 900.
I do have a FireWire clamshell too; I suppose I could test that theory.

No, it's not Finder. It does boot with stock Finder but keeps crashing and it's still possible to use the OS since spotlight works. I also doubt that Finder can cause dyld crashes like those.

By the way, stock 9A321 Finder does work with the patched QuartzCore but the new Quick Look options will freeze Finder, it also has some missing UI elements, most likely due to my patch.

It seems like the "Get Info" crash that happens since 9A241 reported in a previous post is caused by the same problem that crashes 9A303/9A321 Finder. I could be wrong but I think it's due to a broken software Core Image implementation.

This is really odd. Literally all I did was replace Finder.app. It looks like the last time I did it in the post you linked, loginwindow.app was causing a problem.

It's been so long since I've screwed with any of this I don't even remember my own posts or steps I've already taken.

loginwindow was crashing at the dyld, you can see that in the logs you uploaded. I guess it was failing to load from the cache but I don't know why and rebuilding the dyld cache fixed the problem.
 
Gonna try something foolish… 9a466. Doubt it’ll work but you never know if swapping some stuff from 9z1554, 9A303 or 9a321 may get it working.

It will not work, most binaries of build 9A343 are already compiled for G4 (ppc7400) and it'll be pretty much impossible to get anything newer than 9A321 working on G3.
