ProRes will fill an iPad's limited storage space quickly, too. 99 out of 100 iPad users don't care and would be better off with hvec format video.
Instead of pondering what you should and would do on an iPad, and what some unsubstantiated number of people actually do with their iPads, I think it would be better if Apple avoids promoting and highlighting a feature that isn't ready out of the box or has a list of caveats.

If this is a bug then quality control is out the window.

If its weird artificial limitation that actually requires you to use third-party apps then it's highly misleading to not point this out in the presentation or on the product page.

Any way, really dumb no matter how you look at it.

I'm a little baffled as to why anyone would want to shoot ProRes on an iPad in the first place, really.
Is this some kind of defense of Apple or putting Apple down for adding/promoting this feature?

Either way, something about camera with you applies, much easier to edit video on iPad Pro, much easier to clearly see what you are shooting, etc. Personally, I shoot most video on iPad instead of iPhone. Works great, previews better, much easier to edit, etc.

MR forumers: 3rd party app stores are a bad idea. apple knows best. about everything. yup.

Apple: ProRes enabled on our new ipads. No, our existing camera app on other OS doesnt come along with it. You want ProRes recording? Use a third party app.

3rd party apps: Introducing betterPad! The all-in-one app solution for all of the stock elements Apple refuses to give you! Featured at launch: Calculator AND ProRes! Take advantage of features you paid for, but Apple doesnt want you to use!

Apple claims that new M2 iPads can capture ProRes: ProRes video recording up to 4K at 30 fps (1080p at 30 fps for 128GB storage). Nowhere on Apple's product page does it say that capturing ProRes requires a 3rd-party app. So, it's either false advertising or someone messed up and Apple being Apple hasn't admitted it.

I think the average iPad user doesn't have a clue what the difference between HVEC and ProRes is and is better served with HVEC coz it's more compressed and has greater compatibility.

I think ProRes via FilmicPro is a fine solution.

It's just an iPad. It's not gonna be great at video. ProRes should definitely be on higher-end video cameras. But an iPad?

I do agree w/ sorgo's comment: "macOS being dumbed down ... iPadOS-like Settings app ... Stage Manager [has] questionable utility"

Apple in general has changed a lot over the years and lately they seem overly focused on generating profit ... all the recent stories on where ads will be used on various apps. They need to focus on being insanely great more and less focused on making money.

FWIW, I've seen rigs for videography for iPads. Something like this:

View attachment 2104021

iPad Pro has the same camera sensor as iPhone 8. The camera lacks focus pixels, OIS, and bunch of other modern features.

Someone could buy such a rig, but I don't think anyone in the right mind would do it.

I was watching an iPhone review and they said neither HEVC nor ProRes from a phone is ideal, but ProRes was still a significant improvement over HEVC. Dunno about on the iPad though.

The iPad Pro has Focus Pixels. Also, for some stuff, digital image stabilization may be sufficient.

You're right, but I guess it's not enough pixels to make a difference and enable night mode.

ProRes could be ProRes 422 Proxy, ProRes 422 LT, ProRes 422, ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 4444, ProRes 4444 HQ.

So just take the middle ground: "ProRes", that's got a data rate of 530 gigabytes per hour at UHD 60fps. And that's just for standard ProRes. Goes up to 1.8 terabytes per hour for 4444 HQ.

The iPad Pro comes with 128GB standard. That's 15 minutes worth of ProRes storage space.

Apple probably doesn't want the unwashed masses calling their support center and asking why their iPad says there's no room to install Angry Birds coz they filled their storage space with ProRes clips of their kids birthday party.

ProRes is off by default on the iPhones and iPads.

And they tell you right in the settings the storage requirements. For the iPhone 13 Pro, it states 1.7 GB per minute for HD, and 6 GB per minute for 4K. That works out to roughly ~360 GB per hour. I don't know what they say for the iPhone 14 Pro.

And I'm still wondering if you can get ProRes recording in Filmic Pro on the 128 GB iPhone. It's not obvious on their site, but I figure if they can activate it for the iPad Pro, they can also activate it for the 128 GB iPhone.

360GB/hr for UhD 60 probably means the phone is using the lowest ProRes quality setting, "Proxy."

I guess Apple didn’t think anybody with an iPad Pro would really use it.

Not that Apple is right in any way, but how many people are using iPad Pro like a video recorder? Or even thinking of using ProRes?

I think Filmic Pro is being used here...?

Yeah, I don't get it; iPad has a much larger screen for a viewfinder, but the cameras are no where near as nice as the latest iPhone...?

Please add the Apple Watch app to that list, would love to be able to set-up & manage an Apple Watch on an iPad rather than the smaller screen of an iPhone...!

In reality, I think most iPad Pro users simply capture documents with the camera.

I'm not convinced why anybody would use prores recording with the ipad's camera. It's a tiny camera with tiny lenses and a tiny sensor. Not much to gain there from prores recording. Sure, it should obviously playback prores as some video comes in that flavour and if you have an emergency and have to edit video on an ipad, you can maybe do that in luma fusion.

Did none of the reviewers catch this? I guess it says something about the interest in the feature.

No one actually reviews things anymore. They just unbox and talk about what it says on the tech specs page. To be fair it seems far more profitable to do things quickly these days than to do them in depth.

I miss the old Anandtech, for example. They would take a long time to get a review out of the latest iPhone, but it would be worthy of the title review.

Actually, it was already mentioned in this thread that some reviewers caught it.

I miss the old days when stuff came in plain corrugated cardboard boxes and foam inserts and nobody cared about filming taking it out of the box.

Sure are lot of expert Pro Res filmmakers here weighing in with the typical inane comments. I suspect that's their format of choice when they're shooting their productions.
