Shooting ProRes video on an iPad? That’s the last thing I would reach for to shoot high quality video.
It's literally on Apple's iPad Pro page:

ProRes video capture.

Now for the first time you can capture ProRes video, using the high-performance media engine and image signal processor on M2 and advanced cameras on iPad Pro. Five studio‑quality microphones and four‑speaker audio with support for Dolby Atmos let you record and deliver theater‑like sound.

spent so much time advocating for these updates in another thread.

this mess is indefensible.

Why the hell are they selling this iPad under "PRO" moniker?

First of all, relax.

"PRO" does not mean Apple is targeting "professional" users. It's simply a label to differentiate and tier different iPad models based on features and price.

That's all there is to it.

Apple claims that new M2 iPads can capture ProRes: ProRes video recording up to 4K at 30 fps (1080p at 30 fps for 128GB storage). Nowhere on Apple's product page does it say that capturing ProRes requires a 3rd-party app. So, it's either false advertising or someone messed up and Apple being Apple hasn't admitted it.

Reminds me of the time they released iPad with LTE… only for that model to be able to use LTE on AT&T and Rogers.

I wouldn't be surprised if, at some point, Apple followed the likes of auto-makers and started locking functions behind a subscription paywall. Sure, your iPad is capable of shooting in pro-res, if you're an Apple One subscriber or pay $5 a month. Hey, we're just offering more options for the consumer. You don't have to pay if you don't plan on using it!

What are you guys doing here if you despise Apple that much? Go out, touch some grass and have fun.
Read again. Neither comment focuses on Apple itself.

In any case, some of the most zealous critics of Apple in fact want Apple to do well. They care, and they compliment Apple when they do something right instead of just defending Apple no matter what. Their approval counts much more.

Drones and fanboys are a dime a dozen. Those who support a company but still remain critical are some of the company's greatest assets.

You need to think deeper. It seems you are the one who needs to "touch grass" and gain more understanding about people. But I want you to stay here, because I think everybody should be welcomed.

People complain because they care and want to stay with Apple. You don't see anyone complaining about Xiaomi on here.

The day I switched from Windows to Mac, I stopped visiting Windows forums and stopped complaining about Windows, because I stopped caring about it altogether.

But other MR users be like "You are not an Apple engineer. Apple knows what's best."

And then if Apple fixes it: "Thank you Apple! I knew you'd fix it all along. That's why I buy Apple."
The two are, of course true. Simultaneously. If an Apple engineer says that it DOESN’T gets done because there’s other more critical work to be done with the finite resources, they know better than anyone typing on MR. And, at the same time, if they have planned for and actually implement the change at some point in the future… then it’s done AND why some may say they buy Apple :)

There are a LOT of people that are upset that Apple stopped supporting iWeb and it shows!

Sure are lot of expert Pro Res filmmakers here weighing in with the typical inane comments. I suspect that's their format of choice when they're shooting their productions.
I’m always thankful of Apple giving them things to be aggrieved about. They might direct their unfocused anger elsewhere. Always better to be angry at a multibillion dollar multinational corporation.

It's just odd that the iPhone camera app can do it, but not the iPad's.

I was using Debian/Ubuntu/NetBSD quite happily until 2011 when I returned to Mac. Been with Mac ever since. But I could always go back to Linux/BSD if Mac gets too iOS-like for me to bear.

Linux has so many window managers you can mess with ... tons of variety. Gnome, KDE, Blackbox, dozens more. Is nice.

But they did add that Apple Pencil hover, tho.
One thing at a time.

Another example of hardware crippled by software.
Just like 4K Timelapse’s on the iPhone. Hardware is capable of doing it, but the default software prevents it.

Glad I have Skyflow.

Does apple even have a software division anymore. What a sad joke.
The music apple is a hot pile of garbage that is impossible to search properly with.. It hasn't updated in years. Come on apple. Write some new apps. It's been years.

I'm a little baffled as to why anyone would want to shoot ProRes on an iPad in the first place, really.
Does that really matter here? This is not a thread about the pluses and minuses of ProRes. If someone want to shoot Pro Res and their equipment can handle it, who's to tell them to not do so because it doesn't fit into your aesthetics? The hate around here is getting worse. More and more people will leave. Only haters will remain. Enjoy the mutual hate.

How many more reasons NOT to get the newest iPad Pro? The A12X iPad Pro was beyond any other tablet and still is. It’s already future proof for a good 5-10 years… then Apple dropped the insane computer hardware M1 iPad that basically gave us another decade (like I feel the M1 has like 15 or more years before any slowdown, lol.)

I think I’ll upgrade when Apple releases the M3, hopefully with better Mini-LED, and also every new tech standard… and then some cooler things, like maybe being give control of the 120Hz and Uber bright 1500 nits… that’d be way cool.
As it stands though, with my M1 with 16GB of RAM and a high-end killer processor and amazing features, I can’t even imagine why I’d upgrade (unless they did what I wrote above, lol). The M2 is not worth anything and I wonder why Apple even released it.

It’s impressive how fast Apple is destroying the iPad line. They used to be king of the tablet and are now squandering their lead position by botching both iPadOS and the hardware.

Guess it’s a good thing: now the competition can catch up and surpass them. Then Apple will have to really outperform itself to keep defending the Mac/iPad combo as separate products.

So Apple should just be free to promote any kind of feature, spec, or video recording format for a new product but doesn't really need to implement it well or at all if only a fraction of buyers actually "need" it?

Yes, this is just normal.

Apple shouldn't be required to create applications that take advantage of every hardware feature they have.

Default software should be simple and few.
