Getting a white one because, I never got a white iPhone 4.

Me too!! I like the white because I think it's more interesting than the black. Everything electronic comes in black these days. I don't think it'll be an issue with the display looking smaller or washed out or anything. The iMac had a huge white bezel for years and it was fine.

Mock white bezel

Although I think I like the black bezel better, I suspect part of the issue is that practically no one (yet) has seen a white bezel first hand. So here's a wacky idea I just tried.

Go hunt on the web for a scale wireframe drawing of an iPad. Print it out and spend a few minutes with scissors and cleartape and you'll have a mock-white paper bezel for your existing iPad. Yes, it will look comical. Yes, it won't be of any use in evaluating the fingerprints or fading issues, but at least it will give you a firsthand approximation of what an white iPad will look like if you're unwilling to wait 4 more days to find out in person.

Wow, we had the same idea. I actually did this a few hours ago as a test. I just traced the iPad and cut it out. I think the white seems a lot brighter. The reflection seems to put a little more strain on the eyes but it's nothing I can't live with. I'll be ordering white and if I decide I'd rather have black I'll exchange it within two weeks of purchase.

I am also getting white with pink cover :) I also had a white kindle and loved the color, though I did end up selling it as I ended up getting kindle on my Blackberry and didn't need the kindle. I look forward to reading on the larger Ipad 2 screen though!

Funny you should say that you sold your Kindle to read on your Blackberry, I fell in love with my Kindle because for the first time in 10 years I could read an ebook and not be on a backlit screen. I knew I was getting my iPad so I didn't think I'd even want a Kindle until I had it. Once I did I was hooked! I take it everywhere and still will. :) Can't wait to take it to the beach and be able to read in the sunlight!

I can not wait to get my iPad... I'm like a freaking little girl at Christmas. This week is moving WAY too slow! Haha

I don't see how white is "girly"
It's just a color.
But then again, I like when men wear pink and purple. ;)

I agree! I think men look very sexy in pastel colors! (or with white iPads - just to stay on topic)

I agree the screen on the kindle is great, but I don't mind the backlit on the BB. I just hate having several different devices. I want a device that does everything ! :) And the Ipad 2 is such a device. Ok, not everything, but close!

I can't wait for Ipad 2 also. Its driving me crazy waiting, reading the forum helps. I will be in town all day Friday looking for my white Ipad 2!

No two ways about it: perceived contrast will be lower with a white bezel. Given the way i use my iPad (see my signature) i wouldn't touch a white bezel model.

Ebooks and videos will look noticeably worse. It is a simple matter of optical physics.

People (like me) used to skin their white Kindle's with a dark skin to improve the perceived contrast. Now notice what color amazon makes the latest models...

It will be time for me to consider a white bezel on an Ipad when Samsung & Panasonic start making white bezels on their plasma's and lcd's.:p

ummmm they do

I love the fact that there are men that are arguing on the internet about the color of an iPad being manly or not. That's so masculine in itself....

I don't see any con on the bezel. It's there so you can hold the iPad easily without worrying your finger touching the actual touch screen. Next time you hold your iPad, think about how you would do it with thinner bezel. Not easy.

Going with white personally.

I've had a black iPad since day one and I'd like something different. Just to change it up.

Me too! I will be stalking all points of sale. Glad I have Friday off work! Haha

I actually had a graphite kindle first (my son still has one) and much prefer the white. It doesn't affect my reading at all.

What!! what are you guys talking about white is totally not girly at all, its gay like this thread..:D:D
nahhh just jive'n

I still wont get one though because of the distraction of the white bezel.

To use an expression Apple are fond of, colours will "pop" far more on a black model. It's obvious to anyone who thinks about it for just a few seconds. Not to mention the optical illusion of the screen seeming smaller on the white model.

This is what is making me doubt my decision for a white model.
I like the look of the white model better. But am considering black for these reasons.

I'm glad most people are swaying from white to black, it just means there might be some white iPads left over for me.

I'm a guy and proud I want a white iPad, and an iPhone too but we all know that isn't happening yet.

HAHA I have been thinking the exact same thing while reading this thread.

Apple may already have some idea of the demand for white vs black - black's sell through rate will be X higher than white and they would stock the stores that way.

Not me, had the white kindle and didn't have any problems reading. I much prefer lighter devices to dark.

But the white provides a bias setting for your eyes, reducing eyestrain.

I would say that the most compelling reason to buy a white iPad (at least the reason that I keep coming back to), is the nostalgia behind what we think of when we look at a white apple product. More specifically, I am reminded of when Steve Jobs pulled the first iPod Nano from his coin pocket at the end of the keynote speech which had the Motorola phone with iTunes on it.

It was tiny, it was thinner than a no.2 pencil, it had a colour screen, and it used a sandwich of two materials (white painted acrylic and polished steel) to make it look even thinner. It was a brilliant design and a brilliant political maneuver to boot.

The same (aesthetically) can be said of the two generations of iMac which had articulating screens, as well as that generation's cinema displays. Things that are white/clear give us a sense of the transparent (the un-sensible), and a feeling of lightness with respect to the tasks at hand. It ultimately comes down to the perception (or misperception) that using these products is effortless.

While the black-colored iPads are much more colour-coherent, with respect to the other switches, the logo on the back, and the screen when it is off, there is a sense that it takes itself just a little too seriously. In fact, a black iPad does a better job of being light and transparent than a white one, but doesn't communicate it (a visual contradiction, I know). Don't get me wrong, I believe that all Apple products are seriously well-designed. But as for consumer behaviour, I think that we as consumers love the idea of a product that just works, that is intuitive, that is convenient, that never fails, AND IS FUN.

To that end I believe the answer in color choice depends on your level of reality in product commitment. The newest Apple products are always the funnest are they not? Anyone looking to own this iPad until the next one comes along will probably want a white one (but should keep in mind that anyone wanting to buy second-hand is likely looking for a longer, more practical commitment and probably wants a black one), and anyone looking to own one for longer than a year will probably want a black one. Black ones will have better resale IMO. Only time will tell.

Which brings me to my semi-final point: a White iPad is actually a symbol of your ability to spend money freely, independent of time. So anyone trying make a social statement about their daily economic worth would naturally choose a white one. Many people know this, and will choose a black one out of disgust for those who would choose white, because it's safer to look like you are making a frivolous purchase for 'practical' reasons than to mindlessly jump on a colour bandwagon.

There are also those who would choose white purely because they like it and don't care what other people think. But that's just a game of statistics: if enough people think white is awesome, then enough people will buy them, and nobody has to worry about what it means, because at that point it won't mean anything.

So really the safest answer is that anyone looking to buy right-away should go black. And anyone thinking about white should WAIT AND SEE what everyone else does to make a decision.

Too much analysis? Don't worry, I think so too. But clearly this is what forums are for.

Historically pink as a "girly" colour is a fairly new developement – as in last century. For a long time it was considered a very manly colour. I wasn't even aware that the gender segregators had reached purple… Although, where I live, the only colours available on male clothing are: black, grey, army green and denim. If that's not paranoid insecurity I don't know what is!

Some colour theory: A black border will emphasize colour saturation slightly but ambient light plays a much more important role here. You would really have to place the two devices side by side to tell ANY difference.

On the other hand, a white border might make colours look more natural because they are pretty much always over saturated on uncalibrated displays. Because I do colour critical work, my desktop background image is always a 50% neutral grey.

White will show the colour of the light hitting the device, which can be a bit jarring sometimes because the screen is at a constant colour temperature. However, the white device is less likely to get stepped on, sat on, or knocked off the night stand. The white device will get noticed more easily because the eye seeks out light colours.
