They bought it from the wrong company - wrong set of rights! Did you not read?

But if the Parent company can be shown to have mislead Apple into this; then they can be not only sued for the same amount, but also damages on top of that. BTW one court in Hong Kong already upheld Apple's claim.

Note to China. If you want a strong economy, don't piss off the American consumer.

Same can be said about Americans. You know, a lot of Canadians are happy our Prime Minster is deciding to sell Alberta oil to China instead of the United States.

You may not realize it in the United States, but Canada is your #1 source oil - twice as much as Saudi Arabia.

So, same thing can be said about your country too.

It's not so black or white in this world.

It's been said over and over, but come on Apple, what's it going to take to bring manufacturing back home to the United States? You've got employees over there with horrible working conditions, underage kids making your products, new drama with Chinese authorities every week, lower overall quality in production, and leaks. Use that $500 billion or whatever it is that you're sitting on to end all of the above problems WHILE bringing new jobs to the US! You have the opportunity to not only make your company better, but make our entire country better! Why not!

Could be a blessing in disguise if Apple finally decides to bring manufacturing jobs back to its home country.

Sure, as soon as we make all unions illegal, allow illegals to work there and get rid of the anti business administration. Oh and expect to pay double for all Apple products.

Or to state the simple answer...Nope.

And this is why American companies should make their products in AMERICA! Hopefully next year we'll have a president who will actually work to bring jobs back to America from countries like China and India...

Amusing hypocrisy

I find it amusing that the country that most disrespects intellectual property by essentially ignoring pirated CD's, DVD's, BluRays, Software, sunglasses, handbags, clothing, computers (the list is essentially endless) is being asked to enforce a disputed claim by ProView.

Maybe someone will finally wise up and realize the risk depending upon manufacturing in a country where the rule of law is arbitrary and capricious...

If production was moved to america it would likely result in lower quality. The chinese workers are far more skilled at this kind of work as they have actually been trained and have far more experience.

This low quality because chinese people build it myth is pathetic. Just because they are not american it doesn't mean they are less skilled.

How often do you pick up a premium product and complain about its build quality? almost everything be it cheap or premium, good or bad is assembled in china

Looks like Foxconn-Brazil opened up just in time as the manufacturing can be moved to Brazil as opposed to China to alleviate the supply chain issue if the appeal fails.

LOL...if we want or need the oil, we'll get it.

The only reason Canada even exists (has not been invaded or taken over) is because of us. So "those Canadians" can be happy all they want about that oil decision...just remember to thank us for the ability to even make that decision.

Too Bad...

It's too bad we can produce these domestically and increase jobs here in America. The "wonderful" unions have ruined all that though. Otherwise we'd be able to tell China to shove off. That would be really awesome!

Yeah, it's too bad really. I feel terrible for all the American Airlines folks losing their jobs (and pensions) around here...I hoe they give their union reps a high five on the way out the door.

Handing out $100M in bribes should be preferable to giving $1.6B to these Proview extortionists. F@%# China. The sooner Apple and all other companies get out of there, the better. I would feel so dirty having to do business in and with that hellhole of a nation.

<sigh>

Thanks for proving my point.

Umh no... Canada has other allies around the world.

Rare earth materials aren't in short supply due to lack of mineral deposits worldwide; more like lack of profitability to mine them. Governments could create a cost support structure for strategic materials including rare earths that would alleviate the problem, pretty much what China did I suspect, but there would still be environmental concerns with mining at many sites in the first world.

There is plenty of material in the ground everywhere, and the mining is not the problem. The problem is that extracting rare earths is very, very environmentally unfriendly. Anyone who is willing to accept the damage to the environment can very, very easily undercut anyone who is not willing to accept that damage.

Now let's say I can produce for 10 cents because I don't care about the damage, and you can only produce for $1.00 because you take care of all the environmental damage. If I sell for 80 cents you'll go bankrupt if you build a plant. If I sell for $2.00 and you build a plant, then I go back to $0.80 until you go bankrupt, and when you're out of business, I'll raise prices back to $2.00.

Awesome...and I'm sure they'll run to your aid....LOL....

NOT

Yes, read your history, Canada played a huge role during WWI and WWII. Your baseless assumptions are just that, baseless and unfounded.

I doubt a new plant in Brazil can cover all of Apple's production needs, the operations in China are HUGE. And then there's the possibility Brazil will start squeezing Apple too, they aren't the same as Communist China, but they have some issues of their own. I'd like to see Apple diversify its operations over multiple counties...hopefully none of which are China, eventually.

However, Apple is also selling an increasing amount of devices in China, and not having their manufacturing there to use as leverage could hurt their ability to conduct business there. Right now that's the only thing they can use, otherwise the Chinese government would dick them around just like they do everyone else. They may still lose this Proview case but if they weren't employing hundreds of thousands of Chinese, they would almost certainly lose as the Chinese government and courts tend to protect their own and stick it to the West whenever possible.

Ignorance and Racism....

That said, these silly little games make me want the people of China to starve.

Wow...I can't believe the ignorance and hatred that's captured in this one sentence. Ralf... you crack me up. Maybe it's time for some anger management? Hahaha....

well its apples own fault for not making sure they own the rights to the "iPad" brand everywhere. if apple can make a fuss about a alu laptop with black keyboard then another company can be a bitch about little things too ;)

You're correlating a laptop story that may or may not be true to justify that Apple deserves the trouble they are having in China? Did you even read the article as it sounds like you did not. Apple did secure the iPad name previously. Besides Apple has no control over a situation where the greed factor has been turned up to extort monetary gain.

The question is, what's really behind all this? Maybe Foxconn is upset about all the bad press recently. Maybe China Mobile has a beef with Apple. Maybe a high-up official got rubbed the wrong way. Whatever it is, the trademark issue is being used to settle some other score.

Yes, Canada did, but that has nothing to do with the conversation at hand.

Name your ally that will come to your aid if Canada is invaded by a powerful foreign force. And don't say France or I'll pass out from laughing so hard.

There isn't anyone but us....who could effectively defend your shores.

Really all this over a name? I say fine change the name to apple pad. Done deal, that company in china can go back to being irrelevant and apple can keep trucking along. I'll buy one regardless of the name. It could be called the imaxipad for all i care. I'm a guy and i'll still buy one ;)
