'Total Cost' of a 360 is however much, or however as little; as a person chooses to spend.

It looks like a choice but there none. Just like any M$ product. Hurray a game console, you can choose not to pay but not be able to play online or to pay and play online. What a choice! All this brings up the total cost of ownership. I am surprised Mac users who bought a Mac just for this reason (total cost of PC is much higher) go ahead and buy a Xbox. That's just stupid.

Wow, anyone remember years back when Sony fanboys were the more respectable ones?

But case in point - I bought an Xbox 360 for £110 and I haven't spent a further penny on it. I don't play console games online, hell I only play TF2 and L4D online on my PC, my bro has all the games and even then they're very cheap now (except the hardcore supernew titles). And I'm using a wireless bridge.
Again. It's how much the user wants to put into it. A PS3 would be very expensive for me since I don't know anyone around here with games, so I'd end up having to buy lots of games, another controller, another HD lead. It'd get pricey.

Well it's all gonna get cheaper for you. More PS3 owners. So more games to borrow from other people. :p

Either that or you can wait until games that you want get cheap, or go on sale. I usually run into games that I want a month later for great deals, usually near half price. ;)

Problem is none of my local friends want PS3's. My girlfriend said she'd get one in a heartbeat if they announced an exclusive FFVII remake (or PSP if its on that), but until then it's a no go. Most people I know are PC gamers anyways and everyone has a 360 or Wii though just because they're impulse buys now. £120 for an Xbox 360 Arcade? It is fairly ridiculous.

It's safe to say that with so many 360's and Wii's already in people's hands the PS3 is in a good position to sell a lot of units.

Explain this to me.

I personally don't like the look of the new PS3 slim. Reminds me too much of the PS2 slim with its cheap looking matte finish. I like the original PS3 better... yes it's a little bulky, but it's unique and sophisticated looking, IMO.

No backwards compatibility. Not worth it. Pass.

I'm surprised people are still wanting backwards compatibility. I mean, for me it'd be nice, but since I already have a 20GB/60GB, whatever. I'm hoping Sony will add it in once the PS2 is done with its 10 years. Software update for B/C.

For some reason, it doesn't feel right playing PS2 games on the PS3. I've only played a PS2 game ONCE ever since I'd gotten my PS3, and just didn't feel it. Yes, I understand upscaled 480i games looks slightly better in HD, but I found that it wasn't much better. I went back to playing PS2 games on the PS2.

I say, if you have a PS2, just play PS2 games on it. Why? Because it consumes waaaaaaaaaaaay less power than the PS3. I know some people don't like having multiple systems hooked up, but if you grab a PS2 slim, it doesn't take up ANY room. Seriously.

This is what Sony should do. Release another PS2 slim, updated with an upscaler chip (like the 360) and a mini-HDMI port built in. Solves all problems with upscaling. :p

Yes that's all very well and good for you. But it's an often requested feature and even here people still want it. So yea. People want B/C regardless of what you think.
Personally I'd rather it have b/c so I don't have to leave more wired controllers lying around and I'd rather not get a SCART splitter, power splitter and controllers that aren't forward compatible. It's much easier having it all in one place.

it's funny how if i had 450$ right now instead of buying a ps3 with some games

i'd buy an xbox 360 and a ps2 and about 15-20 games.

much rather be able to play ps1 and ps2 games than the few PS3 only titles. resistance isn't good enough to justify buying a PS3

Yeah I know I'm just saying. :p

I'd like B/C as well, just as long as it's not just an upscaler and actually enhances in-game visuals via software translation/emulation. ;)

I'm only really interested in the PS3 because a workmate has kept me upto date with the rumors and hype...

I stopped being a hardcore gamer a good few years ago... thus was keen to buy a Wii, because the games are more family friendly and Im really just a casual gamer now. The only reason I would want a PS3 is for SF4 and the Blu-Ray player, even though I dont own a single Blu Ray disc

Which makes me think; do I REALLY need one.

If it came in under £200 there wouold ne no hesitation... but right now the Wii is still looking a better bargain imo. If only the Wii had some decent 'beat em ups'

Well looks like Sony is making quite a stir in the market already. Went to two local Best Buys. Both were already sold out of the 80GB bundles with Little Big Planet and WALL-E. The 160GBs were near sold out, but I'd expect those to not sell anywhere near the 80GBs. Everyone sees $299, they buy that. Like I said before, it's the magic number! Looks like Sony might have done it at the right time too, since Madden was just released. ;)

And plenty of 360s still sitting on shelves...I wonder how the so-call pricedrop for the Elite will work out for MS. How Halo 3: ODST will fare...? I'll be picking that up! :D

My dilema

With the new price drop the PS3 looks quite good to me now.... I want to play through killzone 2, littlebig planet and MGS 4.....

The new PS3 slim is £250 here in UK

But right now, I can get an 'old stlye' one, with killzone 2 for £250

Im not fussed about the new design, and i have no idea why i'd need even 5GB os storage space let alone 120!, but its the under the hood specs that I dont know about.

I'd be gutted if in a cuple of months, the PS3 slim produced better FPS than the old model..... very unlikely I know, but it would bother me.

Anybody know much about this?

Well I'm upgrading. I've sold my existing 40GB PS3 for £160 (with a sixaxis & hdmi) and I'll get the slim on release. It's the Bravia Sync and bitstream Dolby TrueHD that have swung it for me, as well as the capacity hike to 120GB, everything else just gets a "meh" from me.

I do have a question though... can the PS Store purchased games/add-ons (Wipeout HD, Killzone maps and errrr, my girlfriends extra SingStar tracks) be transfered to the new slim? Can I just re-download from the PS Store once or do I somehow need to transfer the purchases PS3-PS3 Slim physically?

You're going to need the space. There are many games that have files you have to install before you can even play it (and they HAVE to be installed, if you don't then the game will quit)... GTA IV, MGS4, LBP, Devil May Cry 4, Assassin's Creed, just to name a few. If you get MGS4 and LBP like you said (cant comment on KZ2 because I havent got it yet), then you'd have already lost about 4 or 5GB to installed data (this can be erased any time you like without affecting your saves, but then you have to reinstall it next time you play the game, so it's easier to just keep it). Not every game requires an installation, but generally when you come across one that does you'll be sacrificing at least a few GBs.

Ahhh... I had no that it took up so much room.... oh well

I cant decide wether to buy now, with a game, or wait....

The new slim has a 45nm Cell B.E (the older models either have a 90nm or 65nm). IGN is trying some tests currently to figure out whether or not the new processors are faster. Apparently, IBM and Sony are trying to keep specifications of the new processors underwraps, so they potentially could be faster. Not only that, but it sucks less energy at the same time.

What is this "Bravia Syncing" I keep reading about? I have a Bravia tv....what would this do for me?

Bravia Syncing is basically Sony's simple way of syncing components. For instance, if you turn on your PS3 and your TV is off, it'll automatically turn on the TV and have it on the correct input. Or, if you turned off your TV, your PS3 would turn off. Easy?

Gah! Our Sony DVR has Bravia Sync and it's not great. It works good in theory but if you set something to record and turn the TV off - bam! Or if you set up the DVR to record something whilst you're out then it turns the TV on. Or if you're watching a digital TV channel or using a different input and it starts recording it'll change to the DVR! It's like a mega annoyance.
