Disappointing to see that it works only with latest version of macOS.
But it doesn't even work on the latest OS!

I'm on 15.2 beta, and I'm seeing everything mentioned above:

- keyboard: no touchid, no special keys
- mouse: no scrolling

and in addition:

- keyboard: volume down key will "show the desktop"
- keyboard and mouse: no battery monitoring

Basically they both seem to be operating as basic standard accessories with no Apple features at all.

I know they'll fix it. But it's a seriously ridiculous screw-up.

This kind of stuff is embarrassing. I buy Apple products to avoid this sort of thing. “It just works” hasn’t been true for about a decade.

Something is wrong at Apple. Have they had resources cut or are people working on too many things at once? Is Apple trying to do too much nowadays?

Whatever it is, it needs to change.

Soo, will this work on OCLP that brought an older mac to Sequoia? Or is this because of Bluetooth low energy or something?

My iPhone does not like connecting to my OCLP mac

Likely some releases of Apple's drivers for their custom keyboard and mouse protocols don't see the new ones as matching, so it degrades to treat it like generic keyboards and mice that don't support things like encrypted fingerprint sensor protocol channels or multitouch 2d scroll surfaces.

If it was a BLE issue I would imagine they would be invisible rather than degrading.

Is it still possible to buy a colored Keyboard/Mouse/Trackpad by just grabbing a serial number of a colored Mac online?

Software limitations for something as basic as a mouse and keyboard...?? Is this where "typical Apple" comes to mind?
🙄
Apple Intelligence: "I can't let you do that, Dave....Not without MacOS Sequoia". Takes real "courage" to force users to update an OS to use input devices
😆
I agree that it's stupid, but rest assured: there will always be people defending them.

I still rip occasional CDs because I'd prefer the higher quality audio vs non-high res audio from streaming services.

This is good to know though. I have an external Blu ray drive I use to rip movies. I'm curious to know if i will have trouble as well.
Qobuz has CD-quality audio. Sure, it costs a bit more, but you do get true quality. And there are small tools on GitHub that you can use to download the FLACs.

This is likely. Nothing like driver support to spoil a hardware reveal.
It also says it on the currently shipped boxes. Were they afraid the boxes would get leaked as well and they are going to update the box of everyone that has currently received one?

Not everything is on Apple Music believe it or not. I recently had to order a cd from Australia (I hadn’t bought a cd in decades) because of licensing issues and it only being available there. I’ve also had and then lost access to some albums on Apple Music. Anyone who has interests outside of mainstream can’t rely on streaming.
I'm not sure the latter part is entirely true. I listen to a lot of niche bands and artists and the majority of them are available on Qobuz and YouTube Music, and IIRC Spotify as well. So if they are not represented on Apple Music, I'd change your sentence too "Anyone who has interests outside of mainstream can't rely on Apple Music".

Betas are not the latest OS release, they are an incomplete version of the next OS release.
But the accessories work fine on 15 stable. It's not like 15.2 is a major upgrade. If it was about 16 beta, fine, but 15.2 beta is not that different compared to the current stable versions. Plus, we're not talking about something special like Secure Enclave, we're talking about basic keyboard and mouse functionality.

They aren’t forcing you to buy their new keyboard.
True...but the basic idea that you need the latest macOS to use the basic functions of a KEYBOARD or MOUSE calls their future intent into question. If I get this new KB or mouse, when will they arbitrarily become incompatible with new hardware or a future macOS?

I'll stick with my wireless Logitech mouse/KB combo, they work perfectly with 15.1 and my virtual Windows machines.

This is something I can’t wrap my head around. They had years to prepare for this. Years!

And in the end they only chose to do the bare minimum: swap ports. And even for that the newest OS update is required.

Probably mentioned already, but if not. The page for the new USB-C keyboard with keypad mentions this

Unless I'm mistaken there's macs on that list that are certainly not apple silicon.

Nothing like a good bit of confusing information from Apple!

I could possibly see how the touch-id stuff might require a newer macOS version, but not the absolute latest.

My Late 2014 iMac meets the os requirement but seemingly I guess something hardware related, is not compatible with the new keyboards and mice.

I have a 16" M3 MacBook Pro for both my personal Mac and my work provided one.

My work Mac is still on macOS Sonoma and likely will not be allowed / blocked from updating to macOS Sequoia for another 6 months yet by IT.

In addition to all the issues already being mentioned here, I can't get the Magic Keyboard to connect via Bluetooth to my work MacBook Pro on Sonoma. It only works while connected by the USB-C cable.

Anyone else running into this same issue?

I want to make sure there isn't any issue with bluetooth with this keyboard, but I can't test on my personal Mac because it's on the 15.2 beta and I'm seeing the same issues there! lol

Which only defines the interface, not what a device inherently can or cannot do, or what the computer will make of the data. The USB interface is about getting data from point A to point B, not what the data means.
USB device classes do that, however (e.g. https://www.usb.org/hid). At least the function keys should be working.
