I'd bet the $3,499 takes into account a higher than normal return rate for Apple hardware. As long as Apple averages even a little profit on each sale, they can afford to keep funding this experiment for a long time. And since they're so far ahead of the competition, why shouldn't they?
I wonder if anyone publicly knows or has guessed what their margins are on vision pro..

They might have had a meeting where they adjusted the retail price to account for returns from influencers 😂

AvP retailing at $1499

After meeting

AvP retailing at $3499

🤨

I think people put off their frustration to Apple of not innovating anymore and think to themselves “they must be spending all resources on Vision Pro”.

That’s the only explanation why the forum has a lot of negative attitudes toward Apple after Vision Pro’s hype died and people found out the Vision Pro is just the nail in the coffin’s

I was waiting for the BOM analysis as well, my guess is around 1200-1500 excluding research, marketing, shipping, and support

Refurbished units are typically discounted ~10%, which still provides a great profit margin.
But i wonder what the margins are on AvP and some of that hardware could be unhygienic to refurbish easily… so parts might just get recycled

That big box 😂

Maybe it could be the star of the show… Apple moves into boxes

Apple Box… Rigid, Reliable, Recyclable starting at $499 🤔

I think its more likely it would be targeted… like justfor vision pro… maybe if you're a customer who has a history of returning many items.

I buy from some companies who have restock fees… if you're a good customer they will sometimes just waive the fee.

I can understand why businesses do it… some customers return things like crazy. They cost the company and us money in the long run.
To be fair, Apple cost themselves all of the money in research, development and returns for Vision Pro. They’ve had a good idea of the popularity of such devices (which isn’t terribly huge, year on year) and released a product vastly more expensive.

I know that is Apples signature move, and Vision Pro looks to be an improvement over how Meta (for example) have implemented certain features and lack somewhat in core hardware, but that doesn’t change the fact that this form factor just isn’t as popular as other, shall we say, tried and tested forms of computing and consumption.

I do totally get the complete geeks rolling around on the floor like pigs in excrement over Apples entry into the market, and I love that journey for them, but if we are all honest about it, this is not a mass adoption device now, nor will it be for decades to come.

Tbh the packaging of Vision pro was surprisingly badly designed. It was a lot harder to get everything out, and even harder to put things back in. It was not a typical Apple unboxing experience.. and their unboxing experience has been declining for a while as well.

Maybe they want to use it as a blocker for people’s return?

I said in another thread…. Even star trek stuck with regular screens and displays, tablets…. If it works 😀

I think it could force Apple to make adjustments to their returns policy for such expensive hardware. Like a restocking fee etc

Especially if they just see people massively abusing a policy whose sole purpose is to give people a peace of mind when spending a big chunk of money... its their to help people make a good choice. I mean they probably have records... and enact a more onerous return policy if you have a history in returning high value items...
But if they were in denial over the return rate for this product then their marketing and research depts weren’t doing their job. This product had “high return rate” written all over it even before launch.

It’s like parking your car right next to a tree and wondering why, birds decided to poop all over it? Because when you do that, you’re just begging for it. And Apple should have known unless they were in complete denial that a niche product with a high price tag would not have a higher than expected return rate.

I think part of their calculation was to get it out there…. effectively becoming part of the R&D…

And in any case…. Whether its successful or not longer term, their research likely holds value for other devices…

We might see a lot of refurbished goggles on the Apple Store in the near future.

Hope so. Then again - not sure they will be in the price I'd be happy with.

Truth is, if I wanted them I could buy them and even as a business expense since I spend a lot of time at my desk. I'm just not convinced I can eek the value out them at this price.

If I have a good year financially I might treat myself to a set. Sort of like I did with iPhone 15 late last year.

Maybe if they have been refurbished 20 times (ie returned 20times) they can be sold at $499

🤔😬
Oh and Vision Pro doesn’t hold up well for any daily use. The laminated glass gets bump so easily. The light seal’s fabric deforms after a few days of use. The solo band also doesn’t hold up to its shape well

As to be expected. Good for views and maybe playing around with it. But practicality, it’s just not it. 🤷‍♂️
The dents it made on all of my favourite YouTubers faces just made me stop watching their channels. I couldn’t help but think the hysterical laughter that ensued would just end up with me popping my lung again or having a hernia.
