I see exactly where you are coming from and you are 100% right; so long as Apple maintains a high price point then Mom, Dad, Uncle Joe, etc. are going to not choose the Mac due to the "Apple Tax."

My only point has been that Apple is perfectly justified in ignoring the needs of Mom, Dad and Uncle Joe if they choose to. If they don't offer a product that is the right fit at the right price for the consumer then that is their choice. In Apple's case (financially speaking) its seems to be a very profitable decision.

Excellent point as well.

Apple doesn't need to offer anything to anyone. They could offer just ONE model if they wanted. Clearly though, their products have very wide appeal on some level. Look at customer satisfaction figures, year after year. Tops on Amazon, etc. Among the smallest in computer sales contraction in this economy. 35-40 million OS X users. Gains in education, etc. Apple's target market seems to be getting just what they want, or otherwise quite happy with what they're getting. And for years now. And overall, they're no more right or worng than anyone else in their choices.

I accept what you're saying. What I was trying to get across was that one is only bound by a contract to the extent that either (i) he feels it honourable to do so; or (ii) he feels that the other party will successfully get a court to force him to comply.

A court does not confirm in advance that it's going to make sure both parties comply with a contract, and the complexity and inaccessibility of the law is such that (ii) is far from rubber stamping. In other words, it can only be decided in arrears that you were actually "legally bound".

I see your point on this. I guess a better way of phrasing what I was saying is that, just like a defendant is presumed innocent until (s)he is proven guilty, a contract is presumed legal until it is proven illegal. If you enter into a contract with another party and do not want to follow one of the clauses, it is up to you to prove why that clause is not binding. If you can not, then the clause stands.

It's a shame

A cheap effective way for people to enjoy the wonderful Mac OSX has filed for bankruptcy..shame.Think apple will drop the case or sue for all the money they can get?

Subjective and unsubstantiated.
Actually it's true. The lack of configurations and the outdated hardware (The ATI Radeon 4870 is last years news to Windows users) put Apple behind. Still no Core i7s.

Incredibly subjective. Also, Gainestown.

Maybe to Mac users the hardware is OK, but to PC users (95% of the population), Mac hardware is embarrassing.

Apple doesn't have Core i7s, by the way, and they don't even have the most powerful Xeon Nehalem (3.2GHz). They got it a few weeks earlier (for once) but now they are behind (again).

When the cheapest monitor Apple makes is more expensive than this vaunted Mac, I'm going to say that they will never make it... because they don't make crap.
Um I could buy a $200 24-inch monitor that would utterly destroy the weak Apple Cinema Display.

So to them...for their use cases...the average Joe...why spend 2-3x more on a Mac when they can get a pc (just like spending 2-3x more for a watch or a tv or desk lamp?) And no, I don't wanna go down all the perceptions/reasons of why a Mac is better than a pc. :D

The thing is Macs don't cost 2-3x more than a PC and certainly not to a comparable PC. If someone is interested in the benefits of a Mac but the retail price is too much for them then I would suggest getting a refurb.

There is no way you can convince me that a $366 PC would be equivalent to my refurb UMB in any way, shape or form.

Some actual numbers

www.groklaw.net has some actual numbers:

$88,000 owed to Carr & Farell, Psystar's solicitors.
$120,000 owed to Rodolfo Pedraza, CEO of the company.
$30,000 or so owed to various credit card processors.
$12,000 owed to the IRS.

The $120,000 number would support my theory that the company was run by some clueless jokers.

The court case is automatically put on hold while the company is in Chapter 11. Nothing that Apple can do at the moment. And it seems unlikely that Psystar would recover from this, so there would be no money that Apple could get. Unless they find that Psystar has backers with money.

AUm I could buy a $200 24-inch monitor that would utterly destroy the weak Apple Cinema Display.

We have some 20 inch CRT monitors at the office that nobody wants and that you can pick up for free. I mean they would definitely destroy an Apple Cinema Display, unless you hurt yourself while lifting them up.

I do agree. Apple is far too restrictive in the choices. More configs would be better.

You don't want to go back to the old days when Apple had 15 products lines (PowerMac, Performers..) and was in $$$ trouble due to too many products & stock and when Steve came back to Apple cut it to just 4 (iBook, PowerBook, iMac & PowerMac).

Upgradable tower - 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo Wolfdale (upgradable to 3.33GHz), 4GB DDR3 SDRAM (upgradable to 8GB), 500GB 7200 HD (upgradable to 1TB), Radeon 4670 256MB (upgradable to 4850 512MB), 20-inch monitor for $799. Then a 2.66GHz Core i7 (upgradable to 3.2GHz), 6GB DDR3 SDRAM (upgradable to at least 12GB-24GB), 750GB 7200 HD (upgradable to 2TB), Radeon 4850 512MB (upgradable to 4870X2 2GB) for $1,299. Still keeps Apple's premium price but makes much more sense.

Yet another bankrupt that puts a strain on the system. What the hell were they thinking??

I love Apple and all but seriously monopolization is just not cool. Bill Gates was harassed endlessly by the Clinton administration for much less than this.

That's part of the problem with manufacturing in North America.

Overproduction on a huge scale.

If Apple is selling fewer desktops than before, and desktops in general are in a downward spiral in the wake of notebooks, why the hell make more??

Psystar were ripoff artists. The "alternative" is Windows, or Linux, or FreeBSD, etc.

"WalMart might carry Macs. They won't be subject to WalMart bargain-pricing. They're just another retail outlet. Who in the world thought someone could actually class up WalMart? It might actually happen."

I'm not a Walmart basher. I shop there frequently. I was excited to learn that my Walmart was getting the iPhone since my little town doesn't have a real ATT store or a Best Buy. But, you should see what's become of their iPhone display. "Look how they massacred my boy." I'm afraid Walmart can only bring a class act down. By the way, my store still has about 50 old shuffles for sale at $45. Multiple color choices.

Apple is NOT a monopoly. There have already been legal rulings about Apple and such allegations, both years ago (around iTunes/iPod) and more recently during an earlier phase of the Psystar case. Guess what? NO MONOPOLY.

MS was found to legally be a monopoly. But that wasn't the problem. Monopolies are allowed. But abuse of your monopoly is not. MS was found to be an abuser. And many think (EU, for one, and *still* regulators in the US) that they are still doing it.

They don't need 15 lines, just more configs in the existing ones and perhaps an extra mini-tower.

Now your talking! The current Mac Pro makes a great top end if it had some more options but there is definitely a product hole between the (now less embarrassing) mini and the Mac Pro for those that want to keep their monitors or use external ones that Psystar filled, or at least tried to.

Apple's worse with portables than desktops.

- No cheap (under $1000) 15 or 16 inch notebook
- No netbook/tablet (I don't really care but some people do)
- Way too expensive, unbelievably expensive
- Bad battery life
- Not enough configurations (again)
- No matte screen for 15-inch (and I think the Unibody MacBook)

As others have already said you obviously have no idea what a monopoly is.

And Microsoft didn't get in trouble simply for having a monopoly but for ABUSING it.

P > MR = MC

Anyway, I find it amusing that so many people are happy about this. Why would them staying in business or going out of business make anyone on here care either way? Apple is just a normal computer company that makes PCs, they don't need you to defend them. They make good hardware that people on here like, but there's no need to masturbate to their logo and upcoming products. Take it easy, guys
