Almost zero reactions.

The day after I got it, several of my workout partners at CrossFit were freaking out about it - but I don't necessarily consider that a "public" reaction.

I had it for over a week before a random stranger made a comment. I used it to pay for my drink at Starbucks and the barista was like, "That's so cool! You're the first person I've seen with one." I live in a fairly small college town, but was still surprised that I was her first.

About a week ago, I was supporting my wife at her first 5k and spotted a lady with the bright green Sport.
I said, "Cool. Is that the 38mm?"
She was like, "I don't know. My husband asked if I wanted a watch for running and he gave me this". A lady nearby asked excitedly, "Can you make phone calls on it?". She said "yes" and the other lady was thrilled, "Oh good, I hate carrying my phone when I run!" The conversation went downhill from there.

I just stood there, dumbfounded.

I was thinking to myself, "You don't need that watch. There are a ton of people on the MacRumors forums who would truly appreciate it." HAHA

This may sound strange but I'm not actually waiting for the Apple Watch I purchased to tell time. I have a Timex Sport Watch for that, and my iPhone as well. So, no need to compare it with the fancy Swiss watches. I can buy a "timepiece" for $10 these days.

I bought it for the "smart' part of what it offers and will offer. The biggest issue for me is that I have an iPhone 6 Plus and keep taking it out to check for a message or text I got. Of course, once I have it out, I go to FB, Strava, other stuff. The Apple Watch accomplishes that. News snippets? Same. Upcoming calendar items? Same.

Who else knows what this new paradigm might achieve. I saw a great article about a deaf and blind woman who said the Apple Watch really helped her get around via the Taptic Engine and the maps features.

So, Apple is not competing with the watch makers, they are changing the dynamics of how we get our information, and how we act on it.

I can see the Apple Pay feature alone being a huge timesaver as well as a big help in reducing credit card fraud.

I hate to say it but with this mind set I think you are going to be disappointed. A couple generations down the road, I think you hit the vision on the head, but with this gen 1 not so much. It is a watch primarily, and it provides a handful of other notifications and features. It is slow and buggy enough to not be ideal as a consumption device, in the ways you are describing.

I think for now we have to think of it the way an earlier poster here said: a watch with a few added features.

Get a lot of "Is that an Apple Watch? I'm hearing mixed reviews on it. Worth it or not in your opinion?"

My reply is usually exactly what they stated they've already heard. My own opinions on it are mixed as well.

For an Apple product to have mixed reviews, rather than polarizing reviews, is newsworthy in and of itself.

Surprisingly, I've had none. I think people do notice it because of the distracting blue band, but otherwise...no questions. I'm trying to keep it that way. :)

A neighbor said she liked my watch. She didn't know anything about Apple watches, she just admired the green sports band.

Not really. The original iPhone and iPad never had polarizing reviews. Reviews were mixed.

"It's just a big iPod touch isn't it!"
"It doesn't have a real keyboard, can't send MMS's, and doesn't even have 3G!"

Sound familiar?

Well, it wasn't a kid, wasn't a guy, wasn't a teenager, wasn't someone that looked to be my age. She had grey/white hair and the wrinkles to go along with the "look". Could have been a good disguise, but I'm betting she was in the 55-70 category.

Older was much easier to type on my phone than explaining my definition of that term.

Touch.

It was that you said she was "older" and not that she was simply an older woman. LOL.

You missed my point. I wasn't criticizing you for calling someone older. No need for the rolling of the eyes. ;)

You didn't need the quotation marks. That implied that she wasn't really older than you, but just looked or acted like she was.

It made me laugh because I was trying to envision what "older" (in quotation marks) looked like. I pictured some chick in her 30s that looked like she was 80 or maybe some teenager who acted like she thought she was an adult and wore mom jeans.

:D

Using unnecessary quotation marks can confuse people.

You didn't need them for "look," either.

I once read a sign at my local grocery store offering them discounts on diabetes "medications."

I'd be afraid to ask what those were if I was a person with diabetes.

My watch was spotted in the crowd a couple times at Rock on the Range. I tried to keep the field band around it as much as possible to avoid possible scratches or noticing since I was in the crowd almost the entire time. It survived the downpour easily, no scratches at all, and the alerts on it were awesome. I was able to know of every alert when I got it, used it as a map to find out where I was when walking around Columbus, and used it as a periscope while in the heavy crowd to get good images. I checked an alert and accidentally went to the home screen and apparently that was all it took because as soon as I did I hear "Is that an Apple Watch?! That is bad ass. Do you like it?"

So after two weeks of vacation here I had to go to school again (not that I hate it by the way :p ). Comments were actually mixed. One of my friends and a teacher found it very neat to see it. But a few others, who are real Fandroids, really had to say that it sucks.

Though they still found it nice to see one in wild as well. So I got that goin' for me, which is nice. :)

Anyway, tomorrow and throughout the rest of this week some other teachers will be at school. So still can get a lot of comments.

Do you find that a lot of people that you're only semi-friends with are asking to try it on?

I say no, then change the subject.

This may sound strange but I'm not actually waiting for the Apple Watch I purchased to tell time. I have a Timex Sport Watch for that, and my iPhone as well.

Just curious, are you wearing two watches at the same time then?

Still no real reactions up here in NYC (Bronx area).

We went to a Gymboree class with my 15 month old daughter somewhere in Westchester, and I was really dreading that. But, shockingly, no one noticed or said anything to me.

Then when we were leaving, my wife said to her friend and her friend's husband, oh how did you like Mel's Apple Watch? Son of a *****. Now I had to go and explain it to them, etc.

Then goes to the next round of questions.

Him:How much does it cost?
Me: It starts at $350.
Him: Oh, that's how much yours cost?
Me: Nah.
Him: How much does your's cost?
Me: It starts at $350.

LOL :).

So what would you call it?

Dunno, but you got me thinking about device names a little bit.

As much as I like their current method of calling devices "Apple" this and that, that naming style didn't seem to excite the mass public for either the "Apple TV" or the "Apple Watch."

On the other hand, I remember people asking me what an "iPod" was. They didn't really care. They were drawn in by the "i" name.

So, who knows. Maybe they should've called it the "iWatch" after all. Or at least the "Apple Smart Watch", which hints at it being more than just a watch.

What do you think? Does "Apple Watch" convey enough ooomph?

Maybe iWatch would have been better. I have a few Apple products and I don't know but always thought the "i" in iPhone, iPod, iPad stood for individual!?
So why not iWatch?!

And they could have simplified the different watches by iWatch Sport, iWatch Steel and iWatch Gold

When I received the watch, several people in my office huddled around and took pictures to post on their instagram.

I've now had it for 2 weeks and there have been zero further comments. The Space Gray BSB version seems very low key and wouldn't really stand out...which was what I wanted. If you want to attract attention, and get comments, go for a jazzier color.

I thought it Apple Watch because you need an iPhone, it's an accessory. The same with Apple TV. It's sold as an accessory to the iPhone.

I appreciate both can be used on their own, this is just how Apple is marketing them.

I suspect the term "iWatch" sounds a bit too geeky & techy. They want this to be a piece of jewlery that just to happens to be a smart watch.

I personally thing that's why they dropped the "i" and used :apple: instead. It does sound a lot less like a gadget when you call it the :apple: Watch.

I have had a lot of people ask me about it. First it was a lady from the leasing office of my apartment complex. She asked if it was an Apple Watch, and she went back to her computer as if I were to say no. When I said yes, she got up and came to me to look at it. I'm also a server, and I have had a hand-full of customers ask me about it, mostly dads in their early thirties. My GM is a watch guru, and she asked me about it too after numerous attempts to hide it from them. She asked me about it, was amazed for 30 seconds, and told me she will now keep an extra eye on me.

Yep, I agree with this theory. Honestly the whole "i" thing is starting to sound really cheesy, even on existing products. I highly doubt we will ever see a new product from Apple that uses the "i" prefix ever again, and the current ones will be gradually renamed over the years. The iMac should be the first to have its name changed.
