I've thought about this many times. Problem is... What about the people that don't have a watch? Many people, especially youngters who grew up with their Smartphones don't have a watch anymore. So they would have to get one, before being able to use this Apple device... Thats a huge hurdle...

Not if Apple sells companion straps to use the device solo.

That looks pretty thick. Anyway, if Apple can nail these four things somewhat well, it will already be a good device compared to the competition (The only other smartwatch that looks cool is the Moto 360, and it's really too bad that its battery seems to be lacking too much):

1. Good looking
2. Gets things done well
3. Solid true one day battery life
4. Non extravagant price

Just over a days worth of battery life. Pft! Not good enough.

Square like every other smart watch. Pft! Seems to be pointless in implying a luxury item. Most luxury watches are round with that wonderful depth and those fabulously expensive looking buttons a dials.

I'm not convinced yet. This could be a poo.

Now where have I seen this before...? ;)

4 years after that thing was introduced and many millions of dollars of R&D, I pray it's not just a nano with a strap. If it is, then the price simply must be impulse worthy.

They be....two birds with one stone. I'm not sure if it'd be very 'Apple' though. They like to have end to end control... Guess we'll have to wait a few more hours...

If they don't announce an Iwatch, I'm buying an Up24 though. I know that much.

Is Quanta a company that only makes parts for Apple? It's possible we are looking at the next Samsung Watch, no?

As long as it doesn't look like the Neptune Pine. Yes this is a real thing:

Hey, give the guy a break.

The Neptune Pine was invented by a 19 year old Canadian.

Basically it's a regular smartphone turned sideways and strapped to your wrist.

"Look, Mum! I just made a smartwatch, hey?"

I kid. Pretty amazing that someone so young can market something like this, and it points out that you can have almost anything made for you in China these days.

When you move manufacturing overseas, you don't just lost the business, you lose the learning opportunity that comes with manufacturing.

For example, only the Quanta engineers (and Apple) will be able to learn why the sensor package changed the way it did. That stuff is gold when you're doing design.

No I hate the fact that everyone gets hard ons over it just because the display is round.

A big part of the decision process to buy or not, for me at least, is the look of the "watch". I am not in Geek mode 24/7 so personally I would prefer something to look like a nicely styled watch. Something I would wear out to dinner with the wife, or to gatherings with friends and not look like I have an iPod strapped to my wrist.

I am confident Apple will design a nice watch whether it's round OR square... but I would prefer it look like a watch, not a "gadget".

Haha I mean I appreciate the hard work he put in, but goodness, that thing is bad.

It seems odd to have a perfectly circular sensor in a rectangular housing. Why go through the engineering process of designing circular sensors to house in a rectangular form? Doesn't make a lot of sense at the moment.

Cough. :D

Seriously though, I believe wireless charging requires a circular coil to pick up on resonant magnetic field created by the transmitter.

I really hope it has this: Wireless electricity demo

It's not a watch - it's an ultra low-powered group of sensors and a microtransmitter that affixes to the underside of *any* watch. Apple doesn't want to sell you one of them - they want to sell you one for every watch you might have (sport, fashion, luxury, etc.).

Why complete in a market with broad consumer tastes and needs when you can use the existing market to deliver your product? The Android kids have no idea what they are doing.

That would be pretty neat, but I doubt Apple would go that route. Any company who's product hinges on another vendor's product will be met with limited success. It would also severely limit what level of integration you'd be able to provide with other devices outside of sensor data.

based on the size of the microphone this is not so thicker that you think.
It's kind of like an Rolex

this falls under the too good to be true category especially saying its water proof. I really will be pleasantly surprised if we see this tomorrow with waterproof.

Wrist Watch

I'll be on "wrist watch" as each presenter comes up to see if someone is wearing it on stage for the big reveal.

I hope Apple have used the Strap area for the battery... gonna be a pain to charge this thing every day.

I understand the sentiment that we don't want to charge a watch-like device daily, but I don't see it as a major blocker. I have to charge my iPhone every night, but have not yet thrown it out in frustration.

Assuming that the wearable does have wireless charging, at least we won't have to plug it in. Just take it off and drop it on the dock/mat before bed.
