well, they announced the 3gs and 3.0 releases the same day at wwdc, they should of had push notifications ready by then

I can't believe the level of whining in the community. I'm pretty sure there isn't some Apple exec sitting behind his desk laughing at us peasents, savoring the horrible torture he's putting us through. Heaven forbid we don't get everything we want exactly when we want it. Honestly, some of the people here sound like Violet from Willy Wonka. "But I want it nowwwwwwwww!"

If Apple is really that horrible, just jump ship and buy one of the other amazingly awesome smart phones where people don't have to deal with delays or fight with impatience. These dramatic, "This is the last straw!" comments are comical.

you are so right....

and to the other guy....yea its frustrating that you make a decision based off of a feature that is not in the product after purchase but you should also know that this is a huge company trying to service not only millions upon millions of phones but applications among much more things so of course things arent hitch free and even still if they were to deliver on said promises ON TIME you would still be on this forum complaining about how its not perfect its glitchy and Yea they may have a had a year to sort out all these things but you as an end user should know that after 3 generations of iPhones that Apple is a stubborn company who would rather release a more perfect product later than a less perfect product early

and if you jump ship you will more than likely be unsatisfied because youll realize how good you really have it...unless you can tell me a phone that go toe to toe with the iPhone in every category

So what I got from this post is that, push actually works, it works very well. But there is some sort of problem with apps trying to get approval in the que. I honestly think this is B.S. These applications that are looking to get approved are the high usage applications of the Push system. Apple is stalling because there is a bigger problem or concern going on over there in Cupertino. We need to get some press on this, we pay money, we buy the whole marketing of these products but when given to the public they never work. I would have had them tell us 3.0 is coming out in July to make sure everything is ironed out so that when we see the final product, Applications and the phone is working in perfect shape.....

Lets stop getting products that do not work, just to compete with other products for stock prices. I need a product that works right the first time. I hate 3.0.1.1!!!!

I honestly think it's just that they don't want to have the system go down from a sudden spike in demand. The AIM beta app definitely works, and works very well. I'm imagining that the apps most likely to be extremely popular (a lot more people will use AIM over IM+) or make heavy use of the system are being temporarily delayed while apps that only do things like send game match requests are being allowed in to help ramp up. Please stop acting like this is the end of the world.

The products never work? lol.

Lets be real....The real problem here is that apple is afraid to turn on push notifications in "full-force". I would normally defend apple and there resistance to put something out early so that it works as planned (they want it running seamlessly). However, this is different. This is something that has been planned for quite awhile. This should be ironed out by now. Tests were run during the beta process, its not like it was a big surprise, or that they didn't state it as a feature of 3.0. Why they are dragging there feet on the MOST important (IMO) feature of 3.0 I don't know why....I'm just pissed....I wouldn't be pissed if they didn't advertise it as a feature either, it's the fact that they are not ready for somrthing they have been planning for quite awhile that rubs me the wrong way. Hmmm....maybe apple "isn't" too different from AT&T....

I figured this was happening. Been waiting for the beejive update, aim update, and others and nothing has been released. I'm using the aim beta and it still works but I think it's about to expire. Oh well I would rather Apple get it worked out instead of us all be disappointed with crappy push service. But not really launching push apps since the introduction of 3.0 is kinda a big deal that I'm sure will get more attention starting tomorrow. On another note where is the tom tom app at? :apple:

Yes...when is the TomTom app coming out?

I just don't think push will ever work, apple has taken a huge server load running the app store, approving each app, and still running itunes! this is way too much, then put push on top of all that! I don't think apple has anywhere near the network that they need for all the stuff they are trying to do.

I agree, this is totally ridiculous. Apple needs to get their act together. I have push enabled for the AP app, and I have only received one push notification sense Wednesday. I'm so tired of this crap. If something isn't ready, don't release it! Seriously Apple you have been really ticking me off lately.

It's not exactly Apple's fault that AP doesn't choose to push many stories. You haven't missed any.

Push notifications are something i won't lose sleep over. Don't get me wrong i like the concept, but its not gonna kill me if i don't ever have it.. As for 3.0 i am thoroughly impressed with it. Maps load much quicker and all other functions run real smooth. Lack of MMS is the only gripe i have right now (Thank you AT&T).

My guess is that the company doesn't equate the various hiccoughs we've endured with any kind of significant loss in sales. For example I imagine a lot of people drink the Kool-Aid and then buy an iPhone just assuming that it handles background apps and asynchronous communication like any other decent handheld device from the past ten years. Then when they realise it doesn't, they just deal with it (how many "I can live without push" posts can you count across this whole forum, trust me if you were on a berry or a palm or whatever you wouldn't even think about it yet rely on it like drinking water).

If they felt it was hurting the bottom line, they would do something about it. But man that Kool-Aid just tastes so goddamn good.

how much of a strain would a pile of pushes for AIM or such put on the cell network also? I think AT&T might have something to do with this too.

hardly anything. The phone just has to open one connection to apple's PN server which uses an insignificant amount of data.

I was afraid that this might happen. Apple can't even handle the traffic for activating iPhones and then they go and set up a system like this?! Just allow backround processes; problem solved. Palm has shown that the battery life concerns are unfounded and if people complain, tell them to turn off background processes.

There's the answer right there. It's obvious Apple knows they can't support fully-enabled Push - which is part of the reason for the server farm in North Carolina. They have extended themselves way too far the past 3 years. Maybe it would be prudent for them to take next year off and instead of releasing another iPhone, stabilize what is there. We really didn't even need the 3GS had Apple did it right last year with the 3G and put in video. Everything else, software can deliver.

Push still doesn't work correctly even with MobileMe. I delete emails on my MBP, sync to MobileMe, and the damn things are still on my iPhone. I have to go into the Mail app so it can check for mail and delete them that way. Doesn't make sense to me at all.

Has any of this actually been confirmed?

All I can see is that developers have gotten an apology for the delay...

No, I think that it's more along the lines of Apple not having their ***** together.

Don

I'm pushing hundreds of alerts every half hour. I've had 3 device tokens come back in the feedback service since the 17th. Of course I'm not pushing millions of items like an AIM, but things seem to be working. I had 1 customer say he wasn't getting anything at all. After 2 days of emails back and forth we finally got it working for him. If others are having issues receiving pushes from me, no one's come forward and emailed the support address. So it does work, and when it's working it's near instant. However, I have no idea if they can't keep up with the demand that having multiple IM clients pushing out millions of messages at a time would cause. What I do know is my push app was approved in 5 days and was available on the same day 3.0 came out.

Sorry what app is this?

I'm really dissapointed about Apple how it has handled this PN thing. Of course I can understand that there could be some problems with that service and because of that it's been delayed (but you would think that since Apple has had so much time since it first was supposed to lauch push that they would have tested and retested it really good before this date..) but the thing that they havent informed ppl like us. It would have been more acceptable if they would have simply said that "we are having little problems here.. major pm apps will be available in few days". Now we're here waiting uninformed and refreshing app store every hour hoping there would be an update :(

Personally, I could care less about Push apps, I just want REAL push support for mail, not that fake yahoo stuff. Especially Gmail.
