That's a pretty poor analogy. It's more like, every time you fill your car up with gas you have to do an oil/filter change and rotate the tires. Why?
Other jailbreak versions allow you to do so without restoring the phone and having to reinstall/reset all of your preferences/settings.

FWIW, in the process of upgrading now, mainly for HDR and airtunes. With that said, not only will I have to redo all my settings, but it's taken nearly an hour to download/install everything.

That's like saying that it's a shame you have to shift your brand new Ferrari by hand when your Ford Focus had an automatic transmission.

I broke down and got pkgbackup (and sborganizer), almost everything but a few things was preserved. Worked great, everything reinstalled in about 3 minutes. I only had to turn off a couple mobile substrate addons I had off, and had to reset up a few activator settings. Def worth the money. I've had non jailbroken apple restores that I had to do more icon rearranging than I had to do using these 2 apps.

So there is no way that Pwnagetool will ever update my BB?

tnx

That's correct, but this is just IN THIS SPECIFIC VERSION (4.1), the next one you might/most likely have to make sure to not update or update depending what happens w/ 4.2 and the jb+unlock train...

It's not there. I've tweeted MuscleNerd about it. There's no reason those of us who've kept our 3GSes on the train all these months shouldn't be rewarded with the same functionality we had in 4.02.
Thanks! I fell the same way too!!! :D , i was running 4.00+PDF patch before this new one (4.1) :p

Is it possible with PwnageTool 4.1 to have custom boot logos for the iPhone4? Is it only possible with the iPhone 3G and old bootrom 3GS?
Nope and they cut them off for the 3GS in this version, so in Pwnage right now only the 3G can do them according to the release info.

as much as I've liked pwnage in the past, it's a shame that you still have to restore your phone. The pdft exploit and geohot's previous versions were so nice so you don't have to redo all your settings.

yeah, but now you can be sure to have less errors and useless parts of code hanging around that might conflict w/ something....

Another problem, my i4 restored just fine but when I open Cydia i get database errors and the sources list is completely empty. I try entering sources but Cydia just crashes. I havent synced a previous backup, not sure what i'm doing wrong.

did you do it in expert and forgot to add the sources? were these sources manually added by you on Pwnage tool?

What Would You Do?

I recommend you restore as NEW not update, it's the correct way to do pwnaned firmwares and you will not lose 500MB of space and work better also. after that if you want you could use your backup of 4.01, I don't like doing it but you could...

OK, I have an iP4 running 4.0.1 BB 01.59.00 jailbroken with JailbreakMe SHSH stored on Cydia. I did have the UltraSn0w unlock, but removed it when the initial iP4 release was draining the battery. Haven't needed it lately.

Should I leave it as is?

Should I upgrade to 4.1 and use Pwnage? Will I gain any advantages? What's the best way? Restoring as New via iTunes only, or do I point it to Cydia to grab the stored firmware?

Many Thanks!

I looked over a few "how to" for pwnage tool and it mentions something about being asked "do you have a iPhone 3,3GS or 4 on contract" I haven't seen that step. Am I missing something? I am on AT&T so I know I want to unchecked activate, but what do I need to do to make sure I keep my 1.59 baseband? I don't need the unlock but I will be out of country in march 2011 and would hate for a unlock not be available for the newer baseband by then. Is keeping the 1.59.00 baseband something that pwnage does automatically??

Upgrade and use pwnage, the update 4.1 is worth it IMO.

"PwnageTool allows you to restore to a custom IPSW file. For instance, you can restore to a pre-jailbroken firmware while simultaneously maintaining your current baseband (and thus your ultrasn0w carrier unlock)."

The draining battery was fixed in the updated version of ultrasn0w by planetbeing since many people were complaining about it and it fixed it fo r them.

The best way is none of those! Here go to clarified and do it as they tell you, if you update original by apple you will lose the unlock and also if you do the trick to point it to cydia instead of apple servers so you can conserve the BB is only for the iPhone 4 that really works not for 3G & 3GS, but I don't recommend you do it like that, so just follow this guide from Clarified and follow instructions:

It's the same thing! That's because you chose Expert Mode, in the Simple Mode is where it ask you about the activation in the question format while in the Expert Mode is in the form of a checkmark and a line about activation... Pwnage Tool either Simple or Expert Mode will let you keep the BB, you can't update the BB (grayed out) in this version of Pwnage Tool (4.1) so just use it correctly and it should let you keep the BB! Follow the iClarified instructions:

Don't have or use ultrasn0w now so that's not an issue.

So, following those directions it says, "You will also need the 4.1 iPhone firmware.
4.1.0 (4): iPhone3,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw"

Where am I getting this from? Do I need to upgrade the phone first via iTunes, then save it via TinyUmbrella?

Thanks.

Thanks for the link! When 'downloading packages', all I need is the OpenSSH?

The filename of *.ipsw is a clickable link. You have clicked a link in a web page before, yes?

so is it bad that i updated my friends phone to 4.1? i couldnt do this crap at all. it would not give me the option to upload my custom firmware or w/e

this si so stupid

If your friend needed to unlock, yes it is bad. If you cannot handle using pwnage, start reading instructions.

4.1 upgrades the baseband. There is no unlock available and none is foreseeable in the near future.

Can anyone help me understand what's happening, I updated my phone to 4.1 using PwnageTool 4.1 which allowed me to keep my firmware on 01.59.00, but Cydia is not working at all... I'm I doing something wrong? Please help me out with some advice if you can...

Iphone 4 / 4.1 / 01.59.00 / Greenpoison / Ultrasnow 1.1 / T-mobile UK / Originally locked At&T

Everything works apart from cellular data and facetime. Will a custom firmware thats been activated alleviate this issue?

No Service after JB with PwnageTool

So I used PwnageTool, and everything seemed to work fine, but now I have "No Service" on my phone (iPhone 4). I rebooted and stil nothing... but everything else seems to be fine. Any suggestions?
