weird, that msj means you don't have root access permission to the system!
try this: can yo go to cydia under: /Private/Var/Stash/Applications/Cydia.... then locate (Cydia_) and set permission to 4777 and it should be good to go.

Also, you should also download pwnage from another mirror if you are trying to create the custom fw again:http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

I just searched the error message online and got the same instructions you just posted, I will try as soon as my phone is finished backing up for the 100 time.... I will let you know

am i screwed?

I followed all the directions posted on iclairfied. I have an iphone 3G jailbroken and unlocked for tmobile at 3.1.2. i backed everything up. I also volunteered to have cydia keep the SHSH blobs. I downloaded the original ipsw and then cooked it using pwnage tool 4.1. after successfully entering DFU and going through the restore process I get only one bar of signal and no carrier....
I really hope I have not screwed myself.
Any information would be helpful! I know there is the ultrasn0w unlock out, is it safe?

baseband appears to be 05.11.07

UPDATE: Figured it out, just needed to install ultrasn0w. Thanks

Hey everyone.

I'm the owner of a hacktivated iPhone 4 that was previously on 4.0.1. I restored it to 4.1 this morning with a custom ispw I created with PwnageTool and installed ultrasn0w. However, after I'm on 4.1, My iPhone can no longer access 3G data from my cell provider. I restored it many more times and it still doesn't work.

Also, I lost the ability to Facetime. The toggle just doesn't appear in Settings -> Phone.

I've restored 3 times to no avail. Can someone help me?

Whats everyone setting their root partition at? Im new to pwnage and was curious.

Edit: The root partition is where the OS is stored at correct??

new to pwnage tool

I can't use pwnage tool because I use my iphone with a pc. is it possible to use someone's mac and pwnage tool on my iphone and then bring it back to sync to my pc?

iphone dev team is genius!!!!

full kudos to the iphone dev team.. worked like a charm..
updated to the new firmware and unlocked with ultrasn0w as well..
although encountered "error 21".. so jst turned off the firewall and restarted the mac..
by d way if i dnt have a contract sim, when pwnage tool asks me, can i check d option to activate the phone and would it work??

No Service

Just wanted to follow up in case anyone else has the problem where they use the tool then have no service. I used expert mode and the same thing happened. So, I tried again the normal way, and this time answered Yes when it asked if I'm on ATT (which in the past for every other PwnageTool, you had to answer no to preserve the baseband). This time, by answering Yes, it worked and the baseband is preserved. So it's different than in past PwnageTool iterations.

I believe it's where the important system files are. I can't quite remember what it when I was on jailbreakme, but PwnageTool suggested 720ishMB for my 8GB 3G, so I left it alone.

You can. There's a thread on this, the IPSWs are in progress atm.

Damn that's aggravating that they update pwnagetool and didn't post what changed. Usually they do when they do this. There is no discussion on the dev team blog about the differences either.

I ended up using Limera1n to get Cydia to work, it works like a charm. I have no idea what was going on with PwnageTool jailbreak. But I do have a question, I'm I suppose to have the green rain drop on my phone after Limera1n, I saw it during the process of jailbreaking but it wasn't there after rebooting my iPhone. How can I tell which jailbreak I have on my phone??

Hi guys - JB newbie here. Hope someone can help. Planing to use Pwnage Tool 4.1.1 (or 2 or whatever latest update is!). When I get to the part that says about is your iphone on contract activated thru iTunes - well here's where I need some help. I have an iphone 3gs which was originally a contract phone (O2 UK) but when the contract ran its term they unlocked the phone for me to use on any network. I still use O2 as it happens but on a monthly PAYG (Simplicity tariff).
So.. is my phone activated by iTunes yes or no? Which button to click?

I presume once jailbroken I can download apps thru the Cydia app that is included in the jailbreak?

Thanks guys

Okay, looks like it is still bugged for the ATV2G

Why do you say that? I know that since i jb my atv, most the times when I start it up, it ends up just sitting there with a black screen for around 30 seconds or more. I did a restore without jb and the issue went away, so its got to be jb related. Just curious as to what youve noticed

Team updated the program again! PwnageTool is now version 4.1.2. These guys are getting as bad as the tinyumbrella updates...

If you don't like it don't use it or wait a couple of days after release; they have to make sure that PT works w/ a BUNCH of devices this time around, so it's bound to have some problems here and there, their programs are free and they release updates quickly to fix the problems.

You're quite fortunate that O2 unlocked the phone for you, I wouldn't expect them to do that.
I'd love to help with your query, but the worry which crops up is will the restore (regardless of what you do in PT) get rid of O2's unlock? I can't help you there, because if it does, that means your, well, screwed. I can't give you a definite answer.
Personally, I'd just click no, the probability of the unlock being there is probably higher.
Sorry I can't give you a clear answer mate, I hope somebody else can.

PT is used for people that want to keep the old BB to unlock unofficially w/ ultrasn0w. Since yours is already unlock the same way as factory you shouldn't use PT, use limera1n or greenp0ison in your case.

I had to use Limera1n also to get Cydia to work on my iPhone. I have always used Pwnage tool but it just wouldn't work this time cause Cydia just kept giving me errors after I installed it.

I bought my Iphone 4 from Apple in Hong-Kong and it came unlocked. Current version is 4.0.2 (8A400). What is the best way to jailbreak this one? Any particular steps I need to follow on an unlocked phone? Anyone have any problems trying or after jailbreaking their unlocked Iphone 4 so far?

Yeah, well I was out of contract after 18 months on the 3GS so was fairly easy to ask them for unlock. Re. locking it again on Pwnage that thought crossed my mind too. Cheers for reply anyway!
