I would have to say Fake because:

- Why would they use a black background rather than the colour dynamic wallpaper they have been using in all the iOS 7 promo material?

- Why use a head-on shot when lately (iphone 4 and up) they have used angle shots to show the hardware?

Likely because they have new features to showcase with the phone using a front-on shot. They have iOS 7's new homescreen to showcase, and they have a new home button design with biometrics to showcase. The angled shots wouldn't do a good job of showing off these new things. The angled shots did a good job of showing off a new design and thinness, which is not necessary this time. More important to get a front-on shot and show off the new iOS 7 design and the new home button design.

I love peoples logic when it comes to these kinds of things. Since Apple previously did things one way, that means they could NEVER do things any other way . Apple has reasons for doing things certain ways, and the reasons for having an angled product shot on the box simply don't apply this time around. They have new things to showcase on the box, and a front-facing shot will accomplish that much better.

Jesus, did this guy take the pics with a phone from 2005?
"taken with an iPhone 3G"
it's 5C camera
...taken with Samsung Gear, no doubt.
Always a blurry, pixelated, small picture.

See:
**If real** someone taking a picture would likely have to do so from a distance and discreetly as to not get caught. Then they zoom and crop the photo making it small and pixilated

This is exactly why I think this pic is legit :)
Because I think they have to sneak in a spycam to get these pictures and probably are searched when they go into these facilities.

I also think it's legit because one of the main selling points of the 5S allegedly will be the finger scanner, which is why it makes sense to have a front facing picture rather than an angled picture IMO. They also probably want to draw attention to iOS7, whereas the iPhone5 focused on the physical redesign, as opposed to the software.

Any worker caught with a real camera would be fired on the spot. They got to be sneaky.

Definitely legit. That's my guess anyways. Black background to go with the theme of matching the iPhone's body color. I expect the white iPhone 5S background to be white and the graphite and champagne to follow suit. This, of course, lines up with the Colors theme of this update. The gray rings in the invite I had originally thought were to show the white 5C, may be serving 2 purposes with the home button on the 5S. Box looks right with the S on the side. It's a different S than the 4S or 3GS had so that tells me someone didn't take the iPhone 5 box and carefully put the 4S's 'S' on it.

The reason I like the black background instead of the normal iOS7 background is that it shows you how iOS7 can look on so many different background colors. iOS7 was a little hard for me to swallow with the bluish-pinkish-purplish background Apple uses on their page about iOS7. But I see now that with one quick change in Settings, and it can look great. Especially with that layer of transparency. Oh, and I almost forgot about that 3D window effect! Excited about that.

http://www.statista.com/topics/840/smartphones/chart/1396/android-phone-sales-by-screen-size/

"...According to data provided by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, only 16% of Android smartphones sold in the United States between April and June this year were equipped with screens smaller than 4 inches in diagonal. More importantly, 55 percent of Android phones sold sported significantly larger screens of 4.5 inches or more"

That was published within the past 2 weeks. I don't know how fair the survey was, but I believe the basic conclusion - many consumers want larger screens.

I'm one of those people. I love iOS, but I really would like a screen that's around the size of the HTC One, although that phone feels slightly too big, it's still pretty close to what I'd prefer.

I love the new home button design if this is really it. I would love it even more if the ring around it maybe had some LED's behind it :D

Think how cool that would be. When you need to place your finger to scan, the lights start slowly pulsing to indicate where to put your finger. And then while its reading your finger, the lights can move from left to right to look like its scanning your finger.

Would also serve perfect as a notification LED. Pulse slowly like the LED on the Macbooks do when asleep.

Wow everyone missed this!!!

The circle changes colors!!!!

It's all about notifications !

if very much serves a purpose, even if its become invisible to you now (a good sign). it's the visual indicator to new users that this is where they should begin. see me. push me. are you ever unsure what to do or where to go? push me. i cant harm you and im your buddy.

conveying that is the purpose of that graphic on that button.

So if the button lights up u know where to start

regarding the 'light' ring around the home button
A persistent rumor is the button will be convex for finger-scanning purposes. If so, you'll want it recessed so the center of the button is flush with the surface of the phone, not beyond it; this requires recessing the button assembly, leading to a beveled inside edge to the surrounding surface. A starkly uniform black surface means that beveled edge will stand out in a photo.

Dunno if it will light up (seems oddly "extraneous" for an :apple: device), but the beveling will be necessary to accommodate the convex button.

I'm an Apple fan, and have been for most of my computing life. There's no way I'll give up using a Mac or an iPad any time soon---but these updates just don't seem hot enough. iOS 7 looks good, and I'm sure it will get better and better, and the fingerprint sensor is a big deal, but the more I read about Nexus 5 (aka Nexus 4 successor) the more interested I'm in in that device. I'm not tied to the ecosystem like I used to think, and most of the apps I love and use regularly are available on Android.

I know customization isn't exactly an iOS feature, and that's not why I'm considering Android. I'm just hoping Apple can bring out something more than some plastic downgrades, and a fingerprint scanner.

Aha!

Hence the gray rings on the invite…

the home button looks like with circled led.. maybe they light it once you need to tap.
There's also option that i'm dreaming

I say fake, if the iPhone is black then the box or at least the top part of it would be black...

Well 1) if they are trying to show off the 'new' home button with that image, they have failed. It's barely noticeable. And 2) my 'logic' is based on Apple's pattern so far. Your 'logic' is based on assumptions about a device no one here has actually even seen yet. So let's call it a draw :-D

you're just inferring that..
IF you go to att.com right now, and search android devices, you will only find 1 device under 4" in the first 20 phones...
Does that mean more people "prefer" devices over 4", or that devices over 4" were the only ones available to purchase?

android has this "bigger is better" kick going on, and you'll see that with all the major carriers, the flagship devices they try to sell you are huge (galaxy sIII, optimus, etc..)
So I wouldn't necessarily say people "prefer" larger screens, more so that is just the trend in production right now..

I considered the unequal distribution of elements on the iPhone 5 bottom as extremely ugly. This home button + halo effect is definitely killing the beauty of the (original) design.

I think the camera this photo was taken with is definitely detracting from it....

I think removing the rounded square graphic from the button is an improvement. It didn't really seem to serve any purpose.

It did, but if the graphic needs to go to include a fingerprint sensor then having a ring around it to make it stand out makes sense.

And...

Ooo, I like that thought. One thing I miss from my dumb phone (a Samsung -heh - flip phone) was the tiny external OLED screen that powered on to show notifications. Didn't have to touch the phone (or even be near it) to see if there were any. It would be awesome if that's what this is.

That home button looks hideous, but It's hard to make out in the photos. I'm guessing it's fake..

This is the real iphone 5S - there are NO MORE SURPRISES. If there were anything out of the ordinary, you would've seen it leaked by now.

Hey, fellow Apple fans: this guy is right, you know. We should manage our expectations (Apple hasn't figured out how to do this yet, admittedly) or prepare for some major anticipointment.

That said, if you're on the "S" plan, I would say it's worth being excited about the new form factor, stretched screen, faster operation and no more passwords!

For the rest of us, there's iOS 7 - that's something to look forward to. :)

Hi, long time lurker first time poster.

My take on the ring around the home button is that is LED and it will "lit up" when SIRI is activated.
Also could be a notification LED alas other devices.

****! I think you might be right

Wow, Didn't see this coming

Now it makes sense

This button can change colors aside from the unlocking function with the fingerprint scanner

So I'm in for one.

can't wait for this to come out...

so i can go buy a used 64GB iPhone 5 and keep my Verizon LTE unlimited plan.

i'm currently using an iPhone 4S and Verizon has intentionally allowed its 3G network to slow down making streaming Spotify on anything above the lowest quality setting nearly impossible. i know i'm not the only one - the community boards on VZW's site are lit up with people flipping out for similar problems with the 3G network

I might expect the box cover use a lenticular image to replicate the motion-shifted wallpaper.
