I recently yanked the 1TB fusion and put in a 1TB SSD + 2TB spinner + 16GB RAM.I still love my 2012 Mac Mini. I keep meaning to throw an SSD in it, but that's not trivial - so I keep putting it off.

That day is almost certainly coming.
Not as bad as you might think! I did it a few years ago and I think it took an hour? I was also cramming the SSD in addition to the HDD, so it involved a bit more... well, cramming. I ordered a bracket and cable kit off OWC (I think) and then followed some terminal directions to make a DIY Fusion Drive -- it added years to the machine's usable life and in fact my wife still uses it every day.I still love my 2012 Mac Mini. many aspects of the product that were appealing, music, videos, storage, desktop, are rapidly being replaced with streaming and cloud storage
Understand, easy to add a drive today to any router. Or in my case a 2 TB mini drive to my MacBook. Yes not opposed to having a local backup, just today there are many more options not requiring another computer. Your point is well taken.https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/the-new-mac-mini-is-almost-certainly-coming.1681773/

I still insist on keeping copies and backups of all my photos, music, etc stored on physical drives in addition to being cloud synced. I have ~20 years of photos and videos alone, and the idea of that existing only on iCloud servers (or anybody's cloud servers) skeeves me out. Hard drives are just dirt cheap at this point anyway.
Mac Mini seems so easy to update. I wonder what’s taking them so long. It already looks nice. Tweak the design a bit and update the internals and ports and voila!
I know it’s not super popular, buttt some people are buying it.
You read it here first- Mac Mini is waiting for ARM. It'll be the first guinea pig.
Even the late 2014 Mac mini could be really great as long as it has either a Fusion Drive or an SSD. The base model with a 5400RPM hard drive runs way too slow on macOS High Sierra. It's passable on Sierra, but High Sierra slows it to a crawl. If Apple changes anything, they need to ditch the model with the slow hard drive, and go all SSD.
Apple should take the basis of this... and make it run MacOS.
Maybe put the innards in a sleek aluminum case. But the hard work is already done. By Intel. Yes, that Intel.

Screw Fusion drives this is senseless setup. PCIe blades like the MBP have (or had until 2016) allowing for end user upgrades along with upgrade able ram.

Lawd! How many displays can that drive 6?! What machine is that?!

Uhhhh, I don’t think an iPad Pro can do what these people are using Mac mini’s for...It's not surprising that Apple isn't very motivated to keep updating the low cost entry to Mac, when traditional desktop computers are a declining and dying market. Buy an iPad Pro instead, you'll be delighted with your purchase, and it is the future of computing.

If Apple wanted to continue their education kick with the new reduced price for schools to purchase iPads, wouldn't a refreshed Mac Mini be another good option for schools? The elementary school that my mother works at uses cheap Acer laptops for all the teachers and in their library. I think Mac Minis would be great replacements if they had updated specs!
The iMac isn't a replacement for the mac mini.
