I have a Mac mini, very satisfied with the product. However, I am using it less and less. Why, many aspects of the product that were appealing, music, videos, storage, desktop, are rapidly being replaced with streaming and cloud storage. Thus, my simple MacBook now my go to system, suplimented with Apple TV and music streaming. What was once a necessity, now just a backup system that gets rarely used. If I was in need of a desktop system, well the iMac would be the new choice, doubt this will happen. I can see where Apple looking a few years down the road, would conclude that this system is not in their future. Hopefully for those who still feel the need for a Mac Mini, maybe one more update will happen. My Mac Mini fails, rather doubt it will be replaced. The rapid system changes today, the Jetson's house almost there.

That day is almost certainly coming.

I still love my 2012 Mac Mini. I keep meaning to throw an SSD in it, but that's not trivial - so I keep putting it off.
Not as bad as you might think! I did it a few years ago and I think it took an hour? I was also cramming the SSD in addition to the HDD, so it involved a bit more... well, cramming. I ordered a bracket and cable kit off OWC (I think) and then followed some terminal directions to make a DIY Fusion Drive -- it added years to the machine's usable life and in fact my wife still uses it every day.

I still insist on keeping copies and backups of all my photos, music, etc stored on physical drives in addition to being cloud synced. I have ~20 years of photos and videos alone, and the idea of that existing only on iCloud servers (or anybody's cloud servers) skeeves me out. Hard drives are just dirt cheap at this point anyway.

I have a 2014 Mini connected to my living room TV. It gets used from time to time. For what I use it for, it does the job well.

Understand, easy to add a drive today to any router. Or in my case a 2 TB mini drive to my MacBook. Yes not opposed to having a local backup, just today there are many more options not requiring another computer. Your point is well taken.

What's the deal with ALL THOSE PORTS????

What does Apple think this is, 2012??????

If no flexibility of ports is good for the iPhone and MBP, why is the Mini plagued with all those awful user-friendly ports??????????

If you guys remember, a little while ago there was a rumor that the new Mac Pro is going to be "modular". Well my guess is that the Mac Pro will have a "base" component and then when you want to add additional hardware, you'll just slide it into an empty slot, or maybe the components will stack and snap together or something? Well, the Mac Mini could possibly be that base component, which could explain why we haven't had an update on it yet.
So if you're just a home user then you buy the Mac Mini. If you're a professional then you buy the Mac Mini and then any additional components you need.

Even the late 2014 Mac mini could be really great as long as it has either a Fusion Drive or an SSD. The base model with a 5400RPM hard drive runs way too slow on macOS High Sierra. It's passable on Sierra, but High Sierra slows it to a crawl. If Apple changes anything, they need to ditch the model with the slow hard drive, and go all SSD.

Mac Mini seems so easy to update. I wonder what’s taking them so long. It already looks nice. Tweak the design a bit and update the internals and ports and voila!

I know it’s not super popular, buttt some people are buying it.

I have an idea!

Why don’t All of us that want an updated Mac Mini post a message directly to Tim Cook, Phil Schiller and whomever is the head of their computing engineering department on Twitter repeatedly over the course of a day, week and month. He’ll crash their account until they get with the F’ing program!!

You read it here first- Mac Mini is waiting for ARM. It'll be the first guinea pig.

Doubt it. The retina MacBooks are the ideal first candidate. I don’t know what they’re waiting for. Already the A11 has cruised past the low-power Intel chips Apple is using in the MacBook.

Imagine if they used two A11s? Won’t happen cause - Apple and $$$ - but it seems feasible from a power and thermals perspective.

Screw Fusion drives this is senseless setup. PCIe blades like the MBP have (or had until 2016) allowing for end user upgrades along with upgrade able ram.

Apple should take the basis of this... and make it run MacOS.

Maybe put the innards in a sleek aluminum case. But the hard work is already done. By Intel. Yes, that Intel.

Lawd! How many displays can that drive 6?! What machine is that?!

It's not surprising that Apple isn't very motivated to keep updating the low cost entry to Mac, when traditional desktop computers are a declining and dying market. Buy an iPad Pro instead, you'll be delighted with your purchase, and it is the future of computing.

We just got a new Mac Mini for our non-profit. Looking forward to many macOS version updates and the AppleCare extended warranty.
Don't throw us under the bus like you did with our G5 and never released Snow Leopard or Lion and beyond for our 64 bit system. I hear rumors of elimination of x86 support in future releases.

Uhhhh, I don’t think an iPad Pro can do what these people are using Mac mini’s for...

If / when the Mac Mini is updated I bet they will use soldered high speed PCIe flash storage like the latest MacBooks and MacBook Pros. This would enable a much smaller form factor.

If Apple wanted to continue their education kick with the new reduced price for schools to purchase iPads, wouldn't a refreshed Mac Mini be another good option for schools? The elementary school that my mother works at uses cheap Acer laptops for all the teachers and in their library. I think Mac Minis would be great replacements if they had updated specs!

As a teacher, we have craptons of mice, keyboards, monitors, etc just laying doing nothing. Education is a ripe market for Mac mini if we were sold on it. I still want a new one. I’m rocking my classic 2011... 7 years old.

I am surprised no one has responded with the default MR stance - does anyone know if Intel has actually managed to ship a chip faster than what they are using in the Mac mini?

I have a 2012 Mac mini serving as a Plex server. Currently functioning reliably as an always-on workhorse, serving out local and streamed x264 content and even x265. However, I imagine this thing would choke transcoding 4K content and will have to be replaced with an upgraded model. Would that I could.
