Oh! Now that's a cheap shot. See hat happenend when I tried to download file to desktop. Couldn't we do this in quicktime 6? (without upgrading to pro) Maybe I'm just mistaken ^_^ With all those restrictions, it feels like I've downloaded realplayer or something.

I think you had to have pro to save them in QT6 also

iLife use to be a free program itself. :(

Sure, he should ask Apple if he just bought a QT6Pro license, but aside from that?

My QTPro/iLife comparison was valid and in no way supposed to sound harsh.

Does a Quicktime 7 Pro key come with Motion 2
or for that matter what apps does it come with
I know when I bought DVD studio Pro 3 a QT 6 Pro key came with it...

Any Pro app that uses the QT engin will come with a "free" key, otherwise the app won't function. I know that the FCP suite comes with a key. FCP and LiveType won't function with out it. I would guess that DVD Studio Pro requires it.

No, you had to pay for Pro to download to your desktop.

QT is worth it, I'm just ranting about how it has screwed up my day. If the Pro licence was included with Tiger, I would of upgraded sooner. For now, first QT Pro, then a month later Tiger.

WMV HD

FWIW, the Evil Empire has had HD content for much longer on their site. Sure, WMV is prorietary and evil and all, but those 1920x1080 demos look pretty sweet if your hardware can handle it.

so does that mean when I install Tiger it is going to break my Final Cut Pro 4.5HD and DVD Studio Pro 3 ? (until I buy a new pro app or a QT pro key.)

Panther here, Mac mini 1.42GHz. Have you tried the humongous (~150MB) Batman Begins, H264, 1920x816 trailer?

Yeah, I got the Batman Begins trailer. It runs almost perfect as long as I don't have much else running in the background. It worked well with just iChat and Safari open. I had my Office 2004 install going on in the background the first time I opened it and it was horrible.

Thus rendering a large part of Apple's installed user base unable to view them?

Doesn't make much sense to me.
No it'll most likely force people to upgrade to QT7. It is free you know.

If someone came to the QT site to see the trailers but had the wrong software, don't you think they'd download the right software?

But I say put them both on there (H.263, and H.264) so people can compare.

Mweh, I'm an audio person. My landlord messes around with Final Cut Pro just so she can justify buying a G5 (she's transparent - I can see right through her ;) ). So, can we encode songs in aac vbr now in itunes, or do we have to use quicktime directly to do it?

H.264 QTVR

Awwww, they finally removed the:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone
page. I guess you have to get iCrapTunes with QuickTime now. RIP....
That stinks. I appreciate the heads up on that though! I had that old URL referenced on my website's QTVR pages.

Once I get Tiger/Quicktime 7 Pro installed I'm going to see if there's a way to create QTVR 360° panoramic images at 16x9 aspect ratio in Hi-Def (1920x1080) using H.264. Somehow I doubt it, but that would be sweet :p

"Fullscreen" may not work, but "Zoom" does... Almost the same thing, just have to look at a little bit of desktop around the edges.

If your background is black, you might almost think you're running fullscreen. Well, maybe not, but's its cheaper.

But isn't the whole point of H.264 to enable large, HD movie clips? And according to Apple, those are only viewable on G5 based Macs.

If they use small H.264 clips viewed on QT7, is there a gain?

Splash

I understand the Pro-features of the Quicktime Player are specifically labeled in QT7, but is the splash screen still present (the one that promotes upgrading to Pro)? Thanks.

I'm having big problems...

I can't play media off of our streaming server. The window comes up, I hear sound, but there's no video. Just a blank white screen.

I tried going to the Quicktime "Apple Events" page. Can't play that either. See the little "Q" with the "?" in it?

This is happening on all three computers I upgraded to 7.

NOT impressed.

EDIT: I should also mention that the videos on our streaming server DO still play on a PC with Quicktime 6.5. It's something to do with 7.0.

No problems here w/10.3.9 & QT7. Wish I had the knowledge/intellegence to lend some insight. Hope you get it sorted!

Rather than buy Quicktime Pro just to save movies that are embedded in a webpage, I've always used iCab to load the page & the movie, and then dug the movie out of the cache. Crude, but it works. iCab leaves files in native format, just changes the filename, and not the extension. Movies are pretty easy to spot: just look for the multi-megabyte files swimming in 10kb files.

The point of H.264 isn't just for HD video. You can also have SD video like we have now, but (in theory) at a smaller file size and better quality video.

I'd love to see more examples of non-HD H.264 video files, to see what kind of quality we can get in what kind of file sizes. Or, even better, the same video clip in both regular MPEG4 and H.264, at the same resolution, to compare the two.

The gain would be in reduced file size, therefore reduced download time.

full screen for free

I know a lot of people here have an aversion to realplayer, but there most recent version is nowhere near the level of crap that it used to be, plus it can play any quicktime content FULLSCREEN! I just downloaded the 1080i (148MB) Batman Begins trailer here and played it fullscreen on my 23" with realplayer. Didn't have to reinstall or change any settings for it to support h.264. If you only need fullscreen support there's no need to upgrade to pro...

Perhaps I am Chicken Little; the problem may be just my machine. Nobody else is complaining about haveing problems with FCP 4.5 and no QT7 key.

Other versions of FCP were screwed every time there was a major QT upgrade. Currently, all but one Import was grayed out, and I could only export in a few formats. It looks like the problems I am having with FCP are machine specific. Nobody else is ranting about this problem. I just had a Kernel Panic, before updating QT, so there may be something up with my PB.

My AppleScripts that use QT are still screwed, and that is the updates fault. I also can no longer save or convert file formats via QT any more.

Something else to point out about the new QT, it's completely scaleable. It should be able to go beyond HD resolution or play a single pixel on your screen, dependent on your terminal and the mediums resolution. I thought that HD 264 was a format for HD, and that Apple's compression is now variable. It may be that QT is more efficient at encoding (I don't know if DVD Studio Pro or FCP 5 uses Compressor), but it shouldn't have anything to do with HD 264 standards. The fact that Apple is moving towards complete scalability and greater extensibility is fantastic. It should be possible to batch footage so that it can be streamed online in any number of formats and ported to HD for immediate play. Changes made to a single frame or element (animation) should not require anything more than re-rendering the final project. No clip substitution or micromanagement should be necessary.- But this is more a function of the Pro apps moving towards being completely integrated and extensible. – Sorry for the digression.

movie plays while minimizing

I was just playing around w/ quicktime 7 and the performance while minimizing is much better than 6. try this...

1. open a movie in quicktime and start it playing
2. shift click on the minimize button (the middle/yellow one)
3. enjoy!
4. shift click on the minimized icon in the dock
5. continue enjoying!

If you're like me and normally use the 'scale' effect, it's worth switching over to 'genie' just to see it go in slow motion. Quite impressive.

... and? Did you get it working?

Nermal, I guess Australia is. I opened quicktime and took the upgrade to pro option, and it sent me to the Apple store fine. Work for you?

I tried that, and it failed because my address apparently isn't valid.
