People want thinner. People want more features. Space is at a premium. Result: lose the headphone jack.

No, Apple wants to lock users into their lightning connection and the only way they could do this was to ween them off of the 3.5mm by offering a lame dongle as a stepping stone into lightning headphones or their lame wireless ones. This much should be obvious even to a blind person.

QFT. Let's see if you've held true to that position in two years.

Why wouldn't I? I have no unstoppable need to buy Apple products. While I love my 2009, 2012 Mac mini's, iPad Mini 4, iPhone SE that will be the end of it if there is no more 3.5mm. I can find alternatives if I need to.

I suspect that the $9 lighting to 3.5mm converter will be a very popular product. I used to work at an electronics store and cheap headphones were probably by volume one of the most often purchased product.

Folks it is what it is - I don't like it but. The 7's are faster, more storage, better sound, better camera, more waterproof, etc. etc. Let's not forgot all those things.

Can't you read? I wrote: "I don't expect".

And as I already pointed out, there won't be widespread adoption of Lightning because it is proprietary.

You're ignoring all the lightning accessories that exist already and the are going to be coming out due to this change.

Not really, as 3.5mm is going away. Some android phones don't have them and you can bet that more will follow. Plus intel are wanting it gone, replaced by USB-C. There won't be much alternative in the next few years.

Let's do forget all those things because they aren't a quantum leap better than the iPhone 6.

"Better" equates to "unnecessary overkill" after awhile. We see this in the auto industry. BMW has a 300 horsepower engine so Audi introduces one at 320 horsepower and Mercedes at 330 horsepower and then consumers realize they can only go 25 mph around town and 60 mph on the highway and so none of those numbers mean anything, they keep their existing car for another few years until the auto makers provide something they actually need, force them to actually innovate.

People want a headphone jack. Apple have already taken steps to make sure numbers of iphone 7s shipped are not released. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to make a connection.

Just like people wanted vinyl, 1/4 jack, minidiscs, cds, vhs, dvds, adobe Flash, etc, etc.

Times change. The sooner you accept that and deal with it, the happier you'll be.

Headphone jack is going away. Android phones already have started to be released with no headphone jack. Samsung's Galaxy S8 or S9 won't have one. Laptops are already ditching them too.

...except that those were replaced with things that are better. For example, DVD >>> VHS

I found a better solution: not get an iPhone 7

So you mean Moto Z? That's one phone model.

Samsung's Galaxy S8 or S9 won't have one. Laptops are already ditching them too.

As you said yourself:

So, you're now projecting personal opinion as fact? That's the second to last resort of someone that cannot make a rational point.

At this point I'm retiring from this thread. I don't think there's much more I can do to add on the wrongs of losing the headphone jack from the iphone. People on here are happy with compromise and reduction in quality of sound that will be gotten from the half-baked band aid, and simply accept that because Apple is doing it then it must be right.

My guess is that in two years the 3.5mm jack will be about as well remembered as the parallel port. I'm not being facetious and I don't have an axe to grind here. The manufacturers want space for features that will sell new devices and a majority of consumers will be very happy to go wireless.

Yea because a laptop or desktop without a headphone jack makes sense.

They are however the only company that uses a lightning port...

Which you don't need to use for the headphones.

Point is that Lightning is not going to be adopted by other manufacturers.

If you buy Lightning headphones/earphones, it will only work with the iPhone and iPad.

Or you just buy the existing bluetooth headphones that every other company makes.

A dongle for a smartphone? Come on! This isn't a retina MacBook, it's a portable device that should have all required functionality built in. It's ridiculous to suggest that this removal is acceptable and disingenuous for anybody suggest the pro-headphone lobby should go elsewhere if it doesn't suit.

So making your wired head phone approx 76 mm longer will make you "jump ship"?
How many wired headphones do you have? - if more than one purchase a 2nd adapter.....
If you need or feel you may need the "listen while charging functunality" invest in the Belkin adapter.
Isn't the above a solution to your problem?

cool they wont miss you, loosing one customer is not gunna impact them.

Lightning and USB-C are better than 3.5mm jack. The only reason you say it isn't is simply because you don't like the change.

Good short term plan, but long term?

So you mean Moto Z? That's one phone model.
LeCo as well. Thus my pluralising. I had said a couple in. Earlier posts. More will follow now. HTC are rumoured to be doing it with their next model.

As you said yourself:

That's not personal opinion, it's going to happen.

If you've read my posts, you'd know that I've been wanting headphone jack before Apple decided it would happen.

Intel are leading the removal of headphone jack from laptops and desktops. There are already laptops without them.

So I’m a long term iPhone user – back to the very first one. I’ve had most revisions of it, iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and finally iPhone 6S.

I’m now on a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, it was the overall response by reviewers to it and the fantastic battery life that caused me to switch. Of course, I was looking forward to the iPhone 7. So...
  • I don’t mind that they’ve removed the headphone jack
  • I don’t mind that lightning accessories will be limited at first
  • I don’t mind that it further locks me into lightning as a connector.
However…
  • I do care that they didn’t include wireless charging, something I feel is so important if you reduce the device to one port. I’m also confused to why they wouldn’t include it, since it’s been a staple of many other phones for years. Yes, Apple tend to be behind in some ways but to release a phone like this without it is a bizarre move. Especially as wireless charging is very much in line with Apples ethos.

  • I do care that a phone pretty much marketed towards wireless headphones, doesn’t have them bundled.
It’s not the death of the iPhone but it’s certainly a disappointment, especially for somebody like me. I’m waiting for the iPhone 8, until they have wireless charging it simply isn’t as option for me with one port. I don't like limitations and i don't want bulky adaptors.. Judging by the response of people i work with, who all pretty much have iPhones.. They're put off for the same reason.

If they'd of included wireless charging and bundled the wireless headphones, i'd of been pre-ordering.

Bluetooth headphones sound like crap and need constant charging. They are extremely inconvenient.

And the space Apple needed? It got us nothing. An artificial home button that feels like a mechanical home button. Water resistance that no one needs.

We lost a convenient, universal feature so Apple could reduce returns, lower repair costs, and reduce Genius staffing levels. It's a supply chain tactic, Tim Cook and a spreadsheet taking priority over consumers.

You can keep saying this, but that won't stop it being utter nonsense.
