Very pissed about the 2008 thing :(

Hopefully someone takes a risk and try it for us. 8800GT is getting a bit old now.

Expensive stuff... I wish we could change graphics cards in the MacBook Pros the same way! I mean I know it's a laptop so it's not possible and it makes total sense, only mine died for no reason!

I am hoping that these cards will work on the 2008, otherwise I will be seriously pissed, considering that there is no reason why they wouldn't.

Apple can't be so bad to stop supporting their own flagship models once they are over 2 years old..... but this is Apple so of course they can, they have done it before.

What a joke is all I can say if they don't work on an 2008 mac pro. Fingers crossed.......

Im going to come right out and say that these will work in the 2008 pros.

I'm also going to bet this is just Apple being ba*****s and praying on those who know no better, in order to get them to upgrade their whole machine.

Apple are d**ks like that. Pi*ses me off.

Will wait and see if the 5870 works in a 2008. Someone is bound to test it soon. Is there a big difference in performance over the GTX285 to justify spending €449 though ?

I flashed a PC 512MB 4870 for my 2006 Mac Pro - I'd do the same for a nice 5870 :)

F

Yeah, I was just hoping for an offical path which doesnt require me flashing a card myself. It's not that im stupid, I'm just lazy :p Oh well!

Why even have slots in the Mac Pro if you can't upgrade later.

Just so Apple can advertise the 'fallacy' of the Mac Pro being both more "future-proof" and "upgradeable" than other macs.

Reality has shown otherwise sadly with artificial limitations imposed on Mac Pro users just so Apple can continue forcing an upgrade path on users who want / need the latest hardware inside their macpros.

Why do apple keep doing this ?

I held of getting the 4870 as it is really expensive i.e. £289 in UK , I really would like the 5770 or 5870 card as it is £199 and £369. But No idea if it will work on a mac pro 2006 I hope so I cannot see why it wouldn't the 4870 works even though it says it doesn't.

I am pritty certain that it will work on the 2008 mac pros as apple has said in the description of its SSD's that they will only work in 2010 mac pros which is ridiculous they must even work in Power macs let alone mac pros. Its just apple trying to get everyone to upgrade there existing kit by blocking upgrade paths or giving the illusion you cant upgrade.

Time to get rid of that "historic" and"old" 2008 model and give Uncle Steve another 3 grand plus for a new, elegant, and delicious late 2010 model!!! After all, (as I learned by reading this site) we can't expect Apple to support these "old" machines forever.

I hope Apple drops support for 10.7 on 2009 and below MacPros as well!! Wooo Hoo Go Steve!!!

I'm asking myself the same thing. The only part I want to upgrade on my 2008 Mac Pro is the graphics card. I never realized I'd have to jump through hoops in order to do so......and frankly don't really have the knowledge or patience to learn how to work around this issue with the methods apparently possible.

I thought the Mac Pro was upgradeable

Guys, I'm pretty sure the 5870 will work in the 2008. I think Apple just puts 2009 and 2010, because those are the only models it will officially support via AppleCare.

So, if the 5870 will work in the 2008 MP, will the MP support two of these cards? I currently use four monitors, but have five, and having two of these video cards would be perfect for my monitor use. Interesting to see what the future will hold for us 2008 MP owners.

Define 'old' for us. In what way should I consider my 3,1 with the 8800GT old?

What is the reason you want to upgrade the graphics card you now have?

What are the performance improvements in the newer cards?
I now have the 8800GT with my 23" ACD and my large LCD SONY TV connected. These new cards appear to have only one DVI port. So I would need to buy a new cable for the TV to plug into the mini-displayport?

Apple is trying to force us 2008 owners to buy a new one. NO FRIGGIN WAY!!!! This is BS IF it will not work. Time to seriously consider building a hackintoch. Apple can kiss my @&%!

The GTX 285s are getting hard to get hold of now.....They do not appear to be in the Apple store supply chain anymore either.

I dont understand why Apple does this with the Mac Pro line. Its their only system that is upgradable with slots and they don't support many if any upgrades to the video card. I guess all the 2008 owners now know whats its been like for those of us who have 2006 models.

2006?

I'm borrowing a ATI 4870 which works perfectly in my MacPro 2006, so I planned to buy a card for my self, but buying a ATI 5770 or 5870 is even more tempting. I will be very interested to know if this works in my 2006 MacPro! As soon as anybody finds out, please write something in this thread!

PS: I'm certain it will work with 2008 MacPro's, Apple probably just lists it like this to stay true to what AppleCare supports.

The thing I want to know: why is the 5870 available for both the 2009 & 2010 models while the 5770, a seemingly lower specced card, is available for the 2010?

Apple lies all the time. It's possible that these cards only work on these models and that would really suck..but lets keep in mind that every ATI card since the purchase of my 2006 mac pro has worked (forget nvidia, they're stuck on EFI64). The 4870 works on every mac pro ever made even though it clearly says it doesn't. I'm pretty confident that the new cards will work on all mac pros...as soon as someone confirms this (barefeats!) I'm getting a shiny new 5870!

Rominator's has already managed to get a 5870 running in its 2008 Mac Pro with some ROM fiddling... I do not think that this will not be possible with the original one.

Apple just wants to keep everything as simple as possible for us. They don't want to confuse us with a too large choice of GPUs, there are already sooo many options! It's much easier to buy a new Mac Pro with the card already installed in it. Think different!
