Great news for hackintosh users. Thanks for Apple making new drivers to already outdated video cards.
The HD 5770 is about equal to the nvidia GTX 260, which I'm using for years. The HD 5870 is a great card, and the best single GPU performance/power consumption (GTX 480 is faster but consumes power like hell) but it's really on it's end of the cycle. And on the other side AMD is about to release the HD 6xxx Series later this fall.

I don't know why Apple is always so far behind with the graphics cards

Rominator's has already managed to get a 5870 running in its 2008 Mac Pro with some ROM fiddling... I do not think that this will not be possible with the original one.

Apple just wants to keep everything as simple as possible for us. They don't want to confuse us with a too large choice of GPUs, there are already sooo many options! It's much easier to buy a new Mac Pro with the card already installed in it. Think different!

I presume you mean a PC 5870 needed ROM fiddling? More likely the Mac version will work out of the box? (despite the info provided by Apple).

And to people wanting to upgrade their 4870 for 5770.
You won't get a performance hit since they're about equal sans DX11

So you want the Mac Pro to have a card that isn't out yet?

no ;)

But they could've replaced the HD5770 with the newer an better GTX 460/470 series

I have a 2009 MP and the price of the 5870 ain't terrible..... but I do have a 30-inch monitor so for games I really could use 2GB. If a stock 2GB card would be flashed to work in OSX would it show up as 2GB in Windows?

Guess my Rev. A is SOL....

oh well- *sigh

Anyone know the best thing I can put in my Rev. A?
2.66 Dual-Core Intel Xeon

Think Profits! :D

What is the point of having the 5770 and 5870 upgrade kits for the 2010 Mac Pro? You can already select those cards as BTO options. Apple should focus on supporting older mac pros, for users who actually want to upgrade their cards...

Hmm, currently unavailable in the UK store. When we can actually get our mitts on them I'll be popping a 5870 into my top end '09 8 core and look to sell the 4870 on.

Does anyone know if these will support both audio and video through HDMI?

Edit: Upon looking at the image of the upgrade kit, I realized that the card doesn't have HDMI. If someone goes out and buys a different 5770/5870, will the drivers support them, and consequently work with audio/video out through HDMI?

I have two GTS 250 cards in my Mac Pro... SLI under windows... (hackintosh)

I can upgrade whenever I want.

Hackintosh Pro > Mac Pro

OpenCL

Can the 5870 run OpenCL code, and if so, how many times greater is its number crunching performance compared with the GPU in an iMac?

Poor Mac Pro owners are getting effed all the time. Buy a Pro in 2006 to find that it doesn't support Snow Leopard three years later.

Buy one in 2008...

To add a second 5770 or to upgrade to a 5870, if you did not purchase one configured that way and want to change it later.

479 for the 5870 in canada, 429 for the edu price in canada on the 5870,

429 for the 4870...377 edu for 4870 (seems to me it went down slightly, but I could be wrong)

the 5770 is 269 or 239 edu...

this pricing makes me glad I still have my edu discount, makes the 5870 a bit better in price, still odd that the 5770 says for 2010 only (i'm sure i'd work on 2009 at least)

mac pros up, expensive as all heck (the base 8 core is about the same though, still glad I bought my 2009)

now when is the new 27" display coming to the store?

Stupid. I wish Apple could get back to reality and realize the distortion field they put up no longer works now that they're in an x86 architecture.

I paid $150 for my 5770 when it was brand new nearly a year ago (I built the system in October). Now I'll grant you the card has held that value quite well in that time, but it is old, there are newer tech cards out and it's been in production a long time. There's no reason, even if there is a manufacturing process change for EFI boards for it to add $100 to the price of a card that's a year old (is there still a hardware limitation?).

I'm certainly not defending Apple and quite dislike their "upgrade" policy but SnowLeopard runs just fine on 2006 Mac Pro's, perhaps you're thinking of the PowerMac? Also, the 4870 works just fine on 2006 Mac Pro's and most likely the 5870 will too.

Hackintosh Pro > Mac Pro

So you have SLI, under Windows, your computer is unsupported by Apple, not under warranty, you had to build it yourself, research the components, install OSX, debug any issues and have to deal with ever point release possibly breaking your system? WHERE CAN I SIGN UP??!!! Please won't someone trade me their hackintosh for my worthless Mac Pro... :D

Don't get me wrong, I am infuriated to see the "2009-2010" requirement on the new upgrade kits. Pretty ridiculous but I too think that it should work fine in a 2008. I will let someone else be the guinea pig though ;)

I am really surprised since the ATI 5870 is not available for 2008 and disturbed since ATI 5770 is available for 2010; Does that mean Apple may stop supporting my 2009 MP's GPU next year?? I am sure there would angry 2008 model
Amazingly, the mac pro 2010 supports 2 ATI 5770; Is that sign that MP will support SLI or Crossfire in the future? :D

Pretty horrible if apple won't offer up card versions compatible with 2008 mac pro models, What will we have to do?

If apple won't support my model for more than a year, maybe I ought to just get the souped up custom iMac. Forget spending more money with apple cause they don't want to foster long term mac upgrades

5770 is junk, a few dollars more and you can get a GTX460 that'll wipe the floor with the 5770. ATI is going to release their new cards in a couple months anyway. When that happens the 5000 series are gonna be yesterdays news real fast. These cards were released in October, paying more than $170 on a 5770 is just stupid at this point.

That's a great question
