I make more money on one project than you'll make in your lifetime, but I'd never bring it up in an attempt to belittle somoene. People do that as a desperate last resort. Show some class.

"I make more money on one project than you'll make in your lifetime, but I'd never bring it up in an attempt to belittle somoene."

You just did :)

Except that the 4870 actually works on every Mac Pro from 1,1 to current. So as long as they continue this form of unofficial support I will remain happy.

Maybe I shouldn't give up any hopes until some one tries the new 5870 with old Mac Pros (2008 & First) ? I really do hope they work...

Not true - for a short period of time, Apple made available 256MB 4870 with support for the 2006 Mac Pro.

What have you been smoking?

Probably thinking of the 8800GT which had two versions. The original version (EFI64 only) and then later a EFI32 06/07 MacPro version (What i'm running right now). The 4870 never had multiple versions...it just works..because ATI has their **** together and nvidia does not.

Some might want to look here too.

that's rich

fyi...those are MY screenshots that I did a few days ago.

They are from the thread about "Flashing 5770 and 5870"

The French guys never asked me a question or for permission to use them, so the story is a little garbled (inaccurate).

Which makes you like Dorothy and her Ruby slippers.

The answer was right here on MR all along, you just had to tap your heels together 3 times and hit the "search" button.

From Barefeats:

Faster GPUs
ATI Radeon HD 5770 and 5870 GPUs both with 1GB of GDDR5. (Both will be offered in kits. Yes, they are compatible with older Mac Pros, though officially only supported in 2009 and 2010 models.

Everyone can calm down now...

we cant be sure in 2006 MP support untill rom checked to be EBC.

No, I'd still be suspicious of 2006 Mac Pro support... Barefeats saying "older" Mac Pros is kind of ambiguous. But I own a 2008, so what do I care? :p

I assume eventually he'll clarify.

Cool, thanks for pointing that out...now...

What does "Officially supported" and "Compatible" mean?

Am I going to be able to just "Plug it in" to my '08 MP and expect it to work without all these "Flashing" tasks first?

I'm not into the hobby part of fidgeting with the innards...the reason I bought the MP was because of the ease of sliding (literally) hard drives and RAM in the case without much expertise.

I'm still rocking the 8800gt and it's been fine...but I guess like some others have pointed out...I'm a bit more bummed at the lack of nVidia support, more specifically...the Pro cards with Cuda enabled for the new run of Adobe programs...and the INCREDIBLE performance benchmarks from offloading video work to the GPU.

Oh well...at least I CAN have support on the '08 for some of the older FX cards.

You can run a cable that has DVI on the Mac Pro end and HDMI on the TV end. I bought several through Amazon for under $5.
The OP was asking about *audio*. DVI does not support audio. Mini DisplayPort potentially does, but it is not clear MDP to HDMI adaptors supporting audio exist or are readily identifiable vs. those that do.

If you call Apple for help with a 5870 in a 2008 Mac Pro, they won't help you, but it will work (according to Barefeats.)

According to Barefeats, yes.

How about more DVI ports?

I am one of those Mac Users that use 5 or more displays. I have a 47" Westinghouse that is SLDVI/HDMI, a 28" ViewSonic that is HDMI, an Apple 30" display that is DLDVI, a HP 30" display that is DLDVI, & a new HP 30" display that has both a DLDVI & a Display port & DLDVI port on it. Currently I use the last display with the Displayport as a second display for my 17" I7 Intel MacBook Pro using a simple displayport to mini displayport cable (same interface just different connectors) & the DLDVI as the 5th display on my 1st gen (Aug 2006) Intel MacPro. 4 of the displays are runnign off of 2 ATI 3870s & a 5th off of the standard Nvidia board. This allows me not to use my $100+ adapter board that will allow the use of a mini displayport computer to operate a DLDVI display. As is I need 3 DLDVI & 2 SLDVI connectors.

ATI was said to make a 5870 that has 2 DLDVi, an HDMI & a displayport connectors with any 3 active. 2 of these boards would handle my needs. But the ATI 5870 that Apple is showing has 21 mini displayports & 1 DLDVI ports. That will mean more adapters for all but 2 displays.

I also have a 6th & 7th displays that I have hooked to my Intel Mac Pro on occasions.

The new Apple 27" display is a joke for the Mac User that needs a large amount of screen space. For many Mac Users the 16:10 displays mean a loss of some much needed vertical space. The 16:9 27" displays reduces that space by 10 more per cent. That is why I purchased my HP 30" displays as the rumors here was that a 27" 16:9 display would be what Apple was going to produce. I went with the rumors & have had months of very satisfied use. In fact both my son the digital camera photographer & myself belief that the HP displays are much better that the Apple 30" display.

With the lack of both USB 3 & SATA 3 on these new Intel Mac Pros only the 5870 is an item that I like. I'll skip the new Intel Mac Pros, but I may look at the ATI 5870 or at least changing one of my ATI 3870s for a ATI 4870. So if someone wants to make me a good deal for both of us on a ATI 4870 I'm here at heise@mac.com.

Kind of a mute point. The power requirements for the 5870 are too high to support two of them in one Mac Pro. This is why Apple sells the 5770 configuration.

2006 Mac Pro

I am hearing alot of complaining about upgrade limitations and overpricing on the mac pros but in retrospect the 1,1 was a great purchase in 2006. 5 years later the thing is still fast and runs pretty much everything the new models do. In addition, contrary to popular opinion, Apple has been including the 06 in GPU upgrades as it can run the 4870 out of the box.

The question alot of 06 owners have been facing has been whether to upgrade their chips and ram or buy a new system. Its been a tough call every year since the 06 still does everything fine so I have been in a holding pattern..not wanting to spend money on upgrading to octo chips since I may be getting a new pro but still not really needing the new mac pro.

I just upgraded my macpro1,1 last weekend from two Xeon 5130's (2.0Ghz) to 5160's (3.0Ghz) for $65 (each) off ebay.
Installing the 5870 will make me very happy and breathe some more life in to this bad boy :-D

Is there no way to upgrade the powersupply in a MacPro such that one could power (2) 5870s?
