Users: Apple you've really got to give us better web cams on your Macs to make things like video conference calls better.
Apple: We've got great news for you! Now you can spend $1000 more to buy an iPhone, and then another $100 for an overpriced magnet to improve your video conference calls.
Users: 🤦‍♂️
…it also has an updated built in webcam from the previous version.

Disappointed they didn't upgrade the resolution to 2880x1800+Notch, so everyone is not going to be using these in 1:1 pixel mode again.

Other than that, generally happy with the update. Still have concerns on visible chipping and scratching with the darker non-silver colors but hopefully that has improved from years ago.

Headphone jack is on the wrong side….again….

This might seriously drive me to the 14” MacBook Pro. I don’t think I really ever use my Mac without also using headphones and having the crossed wires cause they put the jack on the wrong side just doesn’t work for me. At all.

Huh? I don't get it. Why would it matter which side of the computer it's on? They're both equidistant from your head.

I'm really tempted by this! I have a M1Pro MBP 14" 8/14 cpu/gpu on order (with 32GB and 2TB) but at first glance it looks to me like the M2 MBA could come close to it in performance in the 8/10 cpu/gpu configuration, esp with 24GB RAM and 2TB SSD.

Not sure how the memory speed/quality compares or how the benchmarks for the cpu/gpus will be...but man, this seems like what I've been waiting for for a long time.

SD card slot and OLED or MiniLED would be nice of course, but saving .8 lbs and no friggin fans compared to the 14" (just .4" difference in screen size) is very welcome.

How does a notch allow a smaller chasis?
Because the webcam comes within the screen area allowing for smaller bezels - here's Apple's specs showing a larger screen (13.6 vs 13.3) is fitting within an almost identical area (same width, marginally bigger depth):

the depth is larger...but the device is lighter
The notch gives you the menu bar as an extra...we already establish this pixel by pixel in the 14/16" mbp so its a good thing and also 1080p
But the big thing here is that we know the roots of the next gen SoC
The gpu increase is huge...by scaling like we know from M1->m1Pro>Max>Ultra we can make an idea the gpu increase for the and M2 Max and M2 ultra

So, expect the M1 Macbook Air next year to become the Macbook SE at probably 799 and the Macbook Air to take place at the 999 starting price
Not unless the world changes again.

The M1 Air might disappear after the US Back To School season but I wouldn't hold my breath for the M2 Air price to drop.

Does anyone knows how many external displays can I connect to the new m2 MBA?

I looking to change my 2017 MBA 'cause i can only connect 1 external and want to connect 2 plus my ipad

Seems like a lot of negative reactions here. I will push back and say that this update checks nearly all of my personal boxes and fulfilled most expectations I had. FYI, I don’t do graphic-intensive work: I’m a college professor and musician.

Prior to the announcement, I was looking at machines with 16gb RAM and 1TB drive. The previous Air was around $1450 on the education store, the equivalent 14” MBP a little over $2k. The new Air is $1679, so right in the middle.

The addition of MagSafe effectively means you gain a port over the M1 Air. Annoying that they’re still on the same side, but not a dealbreaker. I also use my current laptop on a stand as the secondary screen next to my external monitor, so the single-monitor support for the M2 Air is again annoying, but fits my setup.

New air is 0.8 lbs lighter than a 14” MBP. That’s noticeable. The 60hz screen is a reasonable trade off for less weight.

The M1 Air has always been the best bang for the buck you can get. That’s still true. This new M2 is closer to a mid-range smaller MBP in functionality in comparison (in this light, I have no sound explanation for the actual 13” MBP just updated.)

All said, if ordering from Apple the M2 Air looks good for my needs. I’m going to monitor Swappa and see what kind of discounts are available for people ditching their machines for this new one.

  • One external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz
Thunderbolt 3 digital video output
  • Native DisplayPort output over USB‑C
  • VGA, HDMI, DVI and Thunderbolt 2 output supported using adapters (sold separately)

They did the same thing with the 2018 MBA redesign. Increased the price by $200. And in 2020 they made it $999

Remains to be seen what they'll do with their own chips inside Macs though.

Price increases/changes were a different beast with an expensive Intel in there and pricing they don't completely control

Won't be surprised at all if the current models just got a permanent increase and they'll just keep older things around for lower price points... Mirrors what they've largely done on iOS devices
