Something amazing.

I got one iPad, and it's outstanding.

Apple's return policy is obnoxiously lenient and easy to abuse.

Someone comes back 3 times they should get a refund and be sent on their merry way.

Apple knows how lenient they're being. That same return policy, matched with very UNobnoxious customer service (so far in my experience), is what keeps me coming back as a happy customer. I feel almost no risk whatsoever when I buy Apple products. If I'm not happy, I just return it.

Issues aren't being made up. Some people are just taking issues that apply to a minority percentage of people (no way of knowing how small or large that percentage actually is) and trying to make everyone "afraid" of running into these same problems, or believe that the problems effect every single iPad out there but that most people are just too stupid to realize it.

Another post that doesn't make sense. In one sentence you say the problem applies to a minority and the next sentence you say no one knows if the problems affect the minority or majority of iPads.

I believe:
The majority of people think they have no issues with their iPads.
AND
The majority of iPads actually have issues.

The majority of iPads actually have real issues.

i agree with your observation.

i ended up going with an iPad 2 refurb for $319

I thought these screen issues are a rare breed, so I bought a new iPad from a non premium shop here in eastern europe. It turned out that about half of the screen had pink tint when you are viewing it like a book. It wasn't that obvious as in some people's photos here. It was mostly noticeable during the night when reading. That was enough to bother me.
I was lucky that apple replaced it, since even I couldn't see the problem at the shop's warranty office (even when they dimmed the lights).

I got an open box replacement from apple service in the country (the shop where i bought it from doesnt have such return policies) and the quality on this one is what I expect from apple.
So, yes, there are bad screens and there are screens with no obvious issues. I also think this problem is widespread, but some people aren't affected by it as it varies greatly and not all people are reading books on it at night.

I learned that I can trust apple, but will buy from a premium reseller next time.

Btw, I saw a funny video relating to the screen issues from one member here on YouTube. He was looking at the black picture on his iPad from a 20 degree angle and was complaining about it being pink...

Here are some 'screenshots' of 3 new iPads, all 3 with uneven screens:

Yellow top 1/3, most of the left side darker. This picture shows the screen upright and flipped around (so no, it's not the camera or angle or w/e)

Left side pink

Top left yellow, bottom right pink

The camera doesn't exaggerate the color unevenness, this is what these screens look like when you're reading indoors. But hey, guess my camera is OCD too right?

Fact: I've been to over 5 Apple stores (there are dozens in the Boston area) and ALL of them have defects. You just don't know what they are. Pink screens galore, uneven backlighting or gradation etc.

I literally won the lottery because mine is actually a near perfect unit. Has an invisible piece of dust under the screen and some nicks on the casing, but screen is uniform for the most part and neutral.

If they were defects did you ask the manager of the Apple Store why they were displaying defective iPads? Honestly, these are not defects.

I wonder how many problems you would find with my ipad that I don't notice any issues with.

This is a joke right?

"The majority of iPads actually have issues"

So you bash the guy for not having concrete proof with %, yet what did you just do?

The sky is not falling.

The VAST majority of the 10's of millions of iPad3's out there are as perfect as can be. If that were not the case, these forums would be flooded with 10's of millions of users...extremely upset. That's just not the case.

Very simple really.

It is a VERY tiny minority (but VAST majority on support forums) of owners who have some incredibly bad luck or simply got a lemon. It happens.

The sky aint fallin' yet.

Maybe one day...but that day aint today for Apple or it's user base.

Give your head a shake!

Do you honestly think people enjoy returning items for the thrill of it, because gas and time means nothing?

If someone here is returning iPads because it's fun , please tell me about it and I may find some fun in it too!

Now where is your proof that 10's of millions of iPads are as perfect as can be? I would think that the average consumer would just return it to the store rather than go on a forum.

In addition, the average consumer would not know they had screen issues unless someone (like one of us MacRomors members) pointed it out to them. I can recall many cases in my life time where people bought "stuff" and were completely satisfied until someone with a little knowledge showed them the defects. Think cars (new and used).

I recall a guy who worked for me all excited about the new car he bought over the weekend. Monday morning he dragged me out to the parking lot to show me. I noticed right away that the paint job was terrible. You can see the primer under the black paint in a number of places. This guy had not noticed it at all over the weekend; he left work and took it back to the dealer that morning.

I suspect that is the case with the new iPad screen issues. Look how many have responded to other threads saying they now notice their iPad 2, iMac, MacBook Pro, etc has a yellow tint, screen uneven, etc.

That is the epitome of self-centered crap. You're essentially saying:

"I'm smarter and more aware than MILLIONS of other people who bought the iPad 3, and only a few are as clued in as I am to see such awful, blatant defects which clearly all iPads surely must have."

The only time your "logic" even remotely makes sense is when your head is firmly shoved up a very dark place.

Yes I'm smarter than lots of people in certain areas of my expertise; just like you.

I'm an electronics engineer and in one of my many positions over the years, I headed up the quality department in our 500+ person operation; so I can spot product and process defects better than many people.

And I don't ever mean to imply that I don't respect that. However, I would say that many of the defects I've seen discussed and portrayed here are pretty obvious, and it's just not logical to assume that the average consumer is too "blind or ignorant (my words, not yours)" to notice. I'm sure that there are people who would ignore such problems, but most would not. And I also think you have to admit that with your expertise, you would be much more sensitive to what are otherwise minor to negligible flaws, the kinds of "defects" that are common with any product that quite frankly I think should be discounted in this discussion.

Besides there are too many posting on these boards who have returned iPads after going to extraordinary measures under atypical circumstances to find these so called "flaws" that they never would have noticed or cared about otherwise. Too much has been made of this issue, and too little acknowledgement has been given to the very real fact that you will find most of the exact same issues with any LCD or other display screen. Just go to an electronics store and look at the wide variance among the television screens. Some of these "atrocious flaws" people are bitching about are just examples of those very same kinds of variances.

No, he's right and you are wrong. I never notice screens and in my family we have multiple Apple devices including both first and second generation iPads. No issues at all, although if you look closely there are some minor variances between them. This is not what most people are complaining about. The New iPad is the only consumer electronic product where I have ever noticed the screen, because I received three in a row with significant tints, the first two being blotchy messes. Even the Apple guys said the first two were NOT within spec and were defective. So yeah with this product you can get multiple units that are defective. I know because I did. That is what most people are bitching about and at least in my experience that ain't normal.

I would agree that most people are happy and I doubt the vast majority of screens are not acceptable. But to say that this is a minor problem is not true based on my experience and what I read here. And it continues as people continue to get product with lousy screens.

Just tried another one, this one has sand or some sort of dust under the screen making it look like a dead pixel, this one is a white one and it is no different then the black one I had, still has some sort of defect in the screen or something trapped in it, Apple's QC has gone WAY down, and the manager I deal with thinks that regardless of how much I paid for it, I should just deal with it, its getting really hard to deal with him, might just go to a different store :p

I am here only to share my experience with the new iPad, I am not waging war on apple or any other posters. Really starting to second guess myself WHY I am even posting on this forum, there are far too many judgemental people that just don't have facts and love to criticize.

Is this the end of the world, of course not, does it affect my ability to function or something always on my mind, no chance....I have far superior problems in my life than an iPad!

I own everything apple and have never came across such problems before, i have been fortunate up until now. There is obviously some issues that need attention and I am sure apple is aware of it.

For all you that have the perfect iPad congrats and enjoy it, instead of belittling others!

One thing I have learned in life that is a fact is you just can't imagine someone's pain regardless of what they have been or going through because you have never been in thier shoes or experienced it. That being said an iPad comes nowhere close to pain or a huge issue , i am just here sharing my experience.

Wise words my friend, wise words.

It has taken me until now, 2 months and 9 returns later, to get an iPad i am satisfied with. I have been through all sorts lol, from yellow, grey, green, pink and blue uneven, blotchy screens (and a mix of all); to uneven backlighting; to dead/stuck pixels; to dust under the screen. These are all very real problems that the iPad 3 retina screen is suffering from.

I am a relatively new Apple customer, my first Apple product being the iPad 2. Before that, I had never owned an Apple product. I had heard, even before buying my iPad 2 that the iPad's and iPhone's sometimes had issues with their screens, but which electronics giant doesn't? This didn't bother me so I went ahead and purchased an iPad 2 in Dec 2011. I loved it from the minute I opened the box, sounds a bit extreme but seriously, I loved that thing lol. I knew from then on that I would purchase a new iPad with each new release, and that is what I did. March of 2012 came around and I sold my 'perfect' iPad 2 on eBay. I had only had it 3 months, it was pristine, not a mark on it. The screen colour, lighting, etc. was spot-on, amazing! No backlight bleed, no dead pixels or dust under the screen, just great. So I sold it at a £100 loss with 3 cases included. Looking back, it was greedy of me. There are kids out there starving to death, drinking filthy water, dying, and there's me selling a perfectly good, 3 month old iPad, just so I can buy the newer 'better' model. Absolutely obsured!

I never dreamt that I'd have any sort of issues with the iPad 3, so when on the 19th March I purchased my new toy (which I really didn't need) I was disheartened to see in front of me a stunning retina screen marred by an uneven, blotchy yellow tint. This started the whole return/exchange cycle. I never thought I had it in me to exchange 9 iPad's lol but the want of an even, white screen took over. I knew great screens were out there as I'd had one but it had dust under the glass. Knowing this made me want one even more.
Again, this whole screen thing is crazy when there are kids starving to death, however, that doesn't take away from the fact that we, the customer are paying good money for these things so why should we be excpected to settle for such poor QC? My iPad 2 wasn't like this so going from such high quality to such low quality left a nasty taste in my mouth...... not so nasty that I gave up with the iPad 3 and Apple, it seems.

The screen I have now is a week 19 DM. It is great! The whites are white, it is even with no blotches, no dust, etc. it's great. The WIFI seems stronger (though the others weren't 'bad'), the battery lasts longer, and the screen brightness is so much brighter when turned up past 50 - 60%. It is a keeper for sure.
I thought number 7 was a keeper also but it had very slight yellowing which I thought I could live with. It got worse as the days went on and I couldn't live with it so I returned it.
Seriously folks, don't give up until you are happy.

Note to self, never buy a new product on or near its launch. This equals QC issues. My iPad 2 was bought 3 months short of a year of its release. All the problems had been ironed out by this time. We will see the same with the iPad 3 and threads and post like these will be no more.

I feel for everyone going through this as it's so disheartening.

Almost makes you want to cry when you open up unit after unit only to find that once again you have an unacceptable product, and have to go through the hassle of returning it. Especially when there isn't an Apple store close and you have to print return labels and set up pickups.

It upsets me because people start thinking that I have the problem, when in fact most of my units have had physical defects, not even really LCD issues.

We should not have to accept yellow corners, uneven screens, nicks, dents, dust, or unsealed cases.

It's our hard earned money, and if some units are free of defects, why on earth should anyone have to pay the same as someone else for 'less'? Apple should strive to make 95% percent free of defects, then that allows for easier returns for those that do have the defects.

I'm going on unit 7 now, only because Apple told me to return the one unit I was going to keep (because of dust, otherwise nice screen) because they don't want me having a defective unit.

This is all well and good, that Apple is striving to please me, but it's still at the expense of my time/phone minutes/ink etc.

It just shouldn't be happening. Period.

Exactly, and the fact that I have had 11 of these, all with either dead pixels or dust, some with more serious problems, and the fact that the manager isn't helping is just bad

[MOD NOTE]
The thread has been cleaned up, stay on topic and no more bickering/arguing.

I believe:
The majority of people think they have no issues with their iPads.
AND
The majority of iPads actually have issues.

I DID NOT SAY that we didn't know if it applied to the minority or majority. i said no one knows what the size of that minority percentage is.
