Upgrading from 10.11.06. 2 1/2 hour download on my DSL... another 1:15 to install... a heads up, ignore the "32 minutes remaining to install." My 2012 iMac sat on that prompt for 30 minutes before it finally started ticking down.

Also, Quicken Essentials (2010) is no longer supported. But I found Quicken 2016 at Best Buy for $59.99, cheaper than the app store $74 download.

Pleasant surprise: Photoshop Elements 10 (yes, I'm still using v10) seems to work fine. Same with Office 2011.

Are you happy? I have apple watch and thought automatic log in would be cool but dont want to be a beta tester!
cheers

Your computer is more than 7 years old, dude. I mean, come on.

I think its great apple dont allow install on Macs of a certain age.
I dont think Microsoft do this one could pop W7 on a 20 year old machine I think not 100% on that but if true that is BAD by Microsoft.

I'm assuming you're being sarcastic since otherwise it'd be hysterical if you thought an 8 year old computer would get a brand new update

AWESOME... Its not available for install on my Mac, so officially my Macbook Pro from Mid 2009 with new solid state HD and 8GB of ram is not-good enough.... So no more updates for me I guess. What a crock of SHIZZ

But what if he bought it in mid 2010? Then it's only a 6 year old machine. :p All that aside.. I sold my late 2013 MBP. These machines are painfully slow compared to the 2015's and even those need a serious upgrade with what's available out there.

Says no updates available can someone tell me what might this be ? I got Safari 10.0 but no prompts for Sierra , this is weird ? Did apple pull it from App Store ?

Any windows laptop can run the latest Windows version. So why can't a mac laptop/desktop?

Artificially making products obsolete is Apple's new mantra.

I'd recommend using a Linux distro if you want to breathe fresh life into an old laptop/desktop.

Check out arstechnica's review where they lay out that there are no technical reasons for dropping support for some of these machines except... because they can.

Efforts to install Sierra on many Macs that are just a tiny bit too old for the update, including many from 2008 and 2009, actually yield no major hardware compatibility problems whatsoever. So the answer, in the end, is that Apple is no longer supporting some of these systems because Apple no longer wants to.

So 8 years is stupid and 7 years makes sense? This whole ******** on people who don't buy new Macs every three years thing was trashy when Phil did it, and it's downright retarded when we do it to ourselves.

Whats weird with this update is it didn't show up under updates but featured apps... it's the first time a major osx release hasn't considered itself an update for me. Are they doing this to slow the rollout?

It really doesn't add up. They dropped most, but not all NV 9400m configs. That would've been a huge win from a maintenance perspective, if only they'd moved the goalposts one more generation on a couple families.

On the upside, at least macrumors provided one article of coverage. Considering all the salivation over iOS10, the iPhone 7, watchOS 3, and Apple Watch 2, I was thinking this site should rename itself. They don't do much Mac coverage at all.

I'm sad to say that it installed and is working fine on my 2010 MacBook Air - I so desperately want to replace this core 2 duo machine with a new, but as yet unannounced, Apple notebook. Hurry up Apple, or you are going to lose a very long term customer.

The only reason current desktop class x86 chips get better single-core performance is that they are designed, fabricated and packaged for bigger heatsinks and more memory (caches, etc.). Apple has plenty of engineers who know how to do that with something very similar to or beyond the A9/A10 processor micro-architectures, maybe even with already existing screaming-(hot)fast prototype chips in their secret labs.

I never said an x86 chip would get better single core performance, I think you are putting words in my mouth. I said an x86 chip would handle a desktop OS better than the A10. Just like an A10 would handily beat an x86 in battery life.

Also, runningnning a desktop OS is not about having a CPU with better single core performance, cooling and cache.

As for the latter part of your post, I won't comment on things that are entirely conjecture.

That's what xmarks has been invented for. You just have to extend your antennae beyond the apple visual range.

It's not that, as soon as I open safari this tittle thing disappears with the so called safari 10 update now in the mac AppStore

I don't know how, but I refuse to update until "someone" tells me how to bring it back with this new OS.

P.D: Had to restore my 2012 macbook pro because of this to the previous OS El Capitan sadly :/

Lots of people are making this error.

Don't check Updates tab on the app store. That's for updates for your current OS.

You have to go the actual app store and find Sierra. Right now as it's new it is in the "Featured" section of the App Store.

Remember, whenever paid upgrades occurred in the past it would show up as new software on the App Store. The upgrades are free now, but the process is the same.

"Take care!" -Tim Cook, encouraged CEO

Sierra has some serious problems with AFP file system on WD MyCloud NAS. It keeps disconnecting on any serious load. I have my Photos library on it, so it is effectively unusable now.

Like El Capitan this install was flawless. I used to clean install in major version changes but that's not gonna happen once a year. (And major releases aren't as major as they used to be. It's not like the jump from Tiger to Leopard.)

At the same time, there's not a lot of front facing changes. Unless you care about Siri—and honestly, if you're tech savvy you probably don't—it's not that exciting. My parents will probably make heavy use of it though. The extra iCloud integration is all right, but not my cup of tea.

There are some cool security changes under the hood and Messages has a minor update. Disk Utility is improved. Oh, universal clipboard is really nice. MacID (and I imagine) other utilities provided something similar but having it just work via continuity is really, really nice.

I don't think the crowd freaking out about the lack of support on older machines is missing anything. The only feature that I'm really enjoying is unlocking via the Watch and without a fairly recent Mac that isn't supported anyway.

The most exciting thing from WWDC—APFS—isn't gonna be ready until the next OS iteration.

Read the Ars article for full details. There is some nice under the hood work, but not a whole lot a lot of the folks around here are going to really notice.

Why can't they make it so an iPhone can unlock a Mac as well? What's so special about the watch?

Simple. You want just anyone move your phone near the computer and have it log in for them?

I'm pretty sure if you leave your watch sitting around, it won't work either. You have to be wearing it and the watch "activated" or however you unlock it. It remains that way until removed from your wrist. That way it knows it's you accessing the computer and not someone else.
