That should not be happening, it is not normal.
Perhaps a clean install would solve your problem?
Or using software like Onyx to clean up your system?

It happened since the first day I got the iMac back in May.

AWESOME... Its not available for install on my Mac, so officially my Macbook Pro from Mid 2009 with new solid state HD and 8GB of ram is not-good enough.... So no more updates for me I guess. What a crock of SHIZZ

Your laptop is more than 7 years old... Buy a 7 year old PC with only those mods and let us know how it handles Windows 10.

In a technology world, that's the same as saying, great.... my grandma can't run the marathon anymore.

everything is slow as crap now on my desktop after updating. The complete opposite from my laptop...

Safari is giving me the freaking wheel every other second and the refresh rate is rather UN-.... UGH!

There is a golden rule in IT, and it doesn't matter which platform you use: NEVER upgrade, ALWAYS install from scratch. Sierra is no exception. After I upgrade a MacBook Pro, the machine wouldn't even shut down anymore. After an installation from scratch, everything feels fast and stable. There might be problems lying in wait, but it's too early to tell.

You're right, it would be easier for Apple to support a few old models, than for Microsoft millions of combinations of hardware.

That''s not at all what I said, nor implied.

Perhaps it's time that you ditched Apple, and switched to a PC. Life would apparently be somewhat less stressful for you, by the looks of it. Why continue down a path that you know will not change, and will continue to cause you some amount of trouble? Seems like a pointlesss exercise to me.

Launch day with no new Macs is like Windows 10 launch with now new PCs (note: there were hundreds of new Win10 laptops on launch day).
Add insult to injury with Apple restricting its installation on older hardware that definitely have enough horse power.

Did you hear my theory? They're working on their own chips for the macs. They're kicking ass on mobile, so why not bring that same technology to the ol' workhorse. I mean, they must have some kind of chip group hidden in that new donut of theirs, so why not make desktop-class chips for macs.

It would excuse the delay. No computer in my house is faster than my iphone7 apparently, and that's rather ridiculous.

I foolishly live in hope that this is the case too. Fingers crossed. All would be forgiven!

Lol, upgrading pcs is never cost effective? I guess PC enthusiasts have been doing it wrong all these years. I'd say you don't know what you're talking about, but you'll probably just claim to be a tech guru with 20 years of industry experience

Well, we are also at a particular point in time. Performance of CPUs per core over the past ~5 years did only improve by 5% to 10% per generation, while at the same time the switch from magnetic hard disk to SDD brought a huge performance improvement to all IO related processes. Thus upgrading a 5 yr old MAC might indeed be quite cost effective.

Come on dude. You have a 7 year old computer and you expect to keep getting support for it. It's time to upgrade.

Sorry - but bullpoop. I am lucky enough for my 'fleet' to be all current and supported, but I sympathise for those who are stuck with older systems for whatever reason.

Why should Apple drop a 7 year old machine if it's still more than capable of running the OS? As has already been shown in the link on the first page of this thread, a number of those "unsupported" systems are functioning just fine with Sierra - they've just been disabled in software, which people have managed to hack around. Apple share components across a broad variety of their systems and I'm more than willing to bet the majority of components in those systems which have been dropped, are used in other systems which are still supported.

All this crap continues to do is to alienate their already irate older customer base even further. It says a lot that Apple are willing to drop support for OSX on those systems, yet they'll run Windows 10 just fine.

Hell they're selling 3-4 year old hardware as 'current / new' models anyway!!

Windows 10 runs flawlessly on machines that are a lot older than seven years - and it comes with a lot more features than Sierra and supports a much broader range of hardware. So how is that possible...?

I guess Apple made those old machines so well that they only way they can force customers into buying new Macs is to prematurely cut off support for those older systems through software instead. Like you say, those systems (maybe with a bit of extra RAM and an SSD) more than have the horsepower for Sierra.

I have the same theory but there are so many flaws in it. Which GPU to use. The chipset. No rumors about it so it's probably not in production yet. I am sure they are coming up with their chips but not this fall.

Sigh. I think this too. Unfortunately. Although Apple do seem to be able to develop and churn out custom chips for iPhone and Apple Watch with no leaks at all. And they would have been at work on this for years. Trying to convince myself here!

The only time I've ever used Siri was for fun as the results are always wrong and the thing is imo utterly useless , so I think I may well skip this install on any macs that are compatible in my house.

Looks like I ain't missing much...

I use the Gemini app to clean my mac up that works brilliantly

If the security updates kept coming for older versions of the OS I don't think I'd bother 'upgrading' at all, which I'm sure is part of the reason they don't.
It is not just security updates from Apple. Also think of browsers like Chrome and Firefox. Latest Firefox version 49.0 for instance just ended support for OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8. And then there will be new software that will only run on Sierra. El Capitan will be fine for a while but sooner or later an upgrade is unavoidable and if the hardware doesn't support Sierra any longer (like one machine in our household), then it will get expensive (or try to get Linux onto the old hardware).

If it were that simple, I would have ditched Apple years ago.

Well, I get that CONSTANTLY on my iMac with El Capitan.... hate it to get even worse. I love Apple, but the Safari performance of late is really annoying (and that is with no plugins and 24 gigs of RAM...)
That's why i use Chrome since day 1 on my iMac. Fast and reliable.

Here's my 2 Geekbench tests side by side. One at 11am, the other at 5pm.
Retina Macbook 12" stock standard. What a HUGE difference Yosemite to Sierra makes.
Won't even open Pages without beach balling and turning to not-responding.
Didn't expect this. Internet Recovery Mode it is, back to Yosemite.

I'm sad to say that it installed and is working fine on my 2010 MacBook Air - I so desperately want to replace this core 2 duo machine with a new, but as yet unannounced, Apple notebook. Hurry up Apple, or you are going to lose a very long term customer.

Your are SAD that it is working fine on your old MacBook?? I would imaging you would be happy!

The good news is Windows and Linux will run absolutely beautifully on your machine still for years to come, should you choose to.

The even better news is, that your current OSX will run absolutely beautifully on your machine still for yours to come, too.
