Ditto here. It's likely that the 'In Transit' you see on FedEx's site REALLY means 'Held at Sort Facility.' If you use the Yahoo FedEx tracking, you'll get more detail:

I would think "In Transit" means it left Anchorage and is on it's way to it's next destination.

Same with mine.

I have a business degree, and I don't know what you're trying to say. If you're suggesting that there is a cost to sitting at home and waiting, there are also several costs associated with going to the store to get it.

But none of those are relevant to the conversation, since clearly the OP was talking about the PRICE of the shipping to the end customer. Which is $0.00. The customer pays the same price for the device either in Apple's store or online.

Yeah, but it isn't free to ship to retail locations either (granted cheaper). The shipping and handling of the device is simply subsidized over all the iPads.

Personally I think Apple did the shipping the way they did so people couldn't try to get higher in the waiting list by paying for faster delivery. (or to save the headache of those people complaining that they still wait up to weeks)

Everything is being delivered today

Ordered my 32 gb, wifi white pad and cover at 12:47 am on 3/11. Order status for the pad is:

"on Fex Ex vehicle for delivery".

The original delivery date for the pad was 3/17 but it looks like I will get it today.

Sure did beat waiting in line on 3/11.

What he means is that the basic shipping, labelled as free, is factored in the price you pay for the iPad. You pay an extra-cost only if you take a faster shipping from the online store. ;)

I was thinking the same thing, but my Yahoo! tracking reads:

2011-03-14 15:36:00 Released for delivery ANCHORAGE, AK
2011-03-14 14:37:00 Held at Sort Facility ANCHORAGE, AK

What is "released for delivery" telling us?

Are any 64GB wifi only models getting through? I've been stuck at prepared to ship for 24 hours now.

I've been stuck there for 72 or so now... since Saturday morning. I just saw one guy with the exact same specs as mine on a truck in Memphis though above... laaaame.

Arrived at FedEx location
OAKLAND, CA

good news for people in California including myself

I wish. For some reason my iPad 2 went from HK directly to Memphis. Doesn't make sense to me, given that I live in Los Angeles... seems to me it would have been smarter to route mine through AK and fly south rather than have it overshoot and have to fly back west-ward.

On vehicle for delivery today ! WOOT-WOOT! 32GB Black WiFi ordered ~ 5am EASTERN TIME Launch Morning.

OK, I see now.

He's still wrong, though.

The cost of the shipping is NOT factored into the cost of the iPad. Note that Apple would normally be charging for shipping (even standard shipping), but they don't when an item ships from China. Why do you think that is?

Because it's factored into the cost of MANUFACTURING. Apple paid to have the items shipped, not necessarily to themselves, but to wherever they need to go.

Once the iPads (or any Apple item) isn't drop-shipped from China, you'll see them charging for shipping again.

Sorry. You are just flat out wrong. This entire discussion is laughable. There is nothing you can say which will change the fact you are wrong. Just move along and respond to something else. I feel bad for your business school....they failed to teach you the basics.
