ridiculous

does anyone here realize that $10 from each iPod goes to AIDS medication in Africa? no one seems to realize the movement of progressive attitudes taking place.

feck you if you think they shouldn't make it because red wouldn't look good on someone's imac or powerbook. aesthetic is not the main point. seriously. let's see some support for a company we appreciate doing something we can really admire. I agree that if you don't want red and still want profits to go to africa, then you should have another choice, but the idea that they shouldn't even make one in red is so shallow.

I remember hearing "NO, Apple will "NEVER" release a black iBook", and now in the MacBook (sure it's a different name and whatnot..), there is a black MacBook, it would be interesting to see a red MacBook, depending how it looks, I might think about getting one, but I doubt I would

I agree aestethics should not be the main point. But if Apple really cared about AIDS, they would give a portion of every iPod purchase to charity, not just one color. They know some people aren't going to buy red. They are glad of this fact, this way they don't have to donate as much money. This is just a way for them to get good publicity.

Not all of the project red goods are red. Like Armani, Gap jeans etc. Converse has black, red and white shoes. Apple could do something similar...

I think it is important that it is only a few products (not the entire line). This makes it your and my choice. Apple should not decide for us to support these causes. They did give us the choice, however. The more we choose it, the more everyone realizes how importnant it is. I am thrilled about this. I would have mixed feelings if Apple did it accross the line without the choice.

Again I say, this is about consumer buying power. Apple gave us the choice, now lets show them what we choose.

Your point is well taken, I hadn't considered that. It is true that there are people who would not want the money to go to AIDS research (hopefully because they think another cause deserves higher priority as opposed to having misplaced fear/hatred for people with AIDS). I don't think that this is the primary reason Apple chose to do the donations with only one color, but you never know.

It is too bad that there isn't some way to donate when purchasing another color. Yes, it's true people can donate money on their own, but look at how many people don't send in rebate forms even though they will get money (sometimes $100 or more) just because they're too lazy to do so...

Sorry to move away from the subject of charity but glossy red ibooks look terrible.

I hear ya. The only rebate I've sent in in the past few years was the Logic Pro/Powerbook combo for $500. We are opportunistic givers... sad as it may be. That's why it's all the better that this option (read: opportunity) is now available. In praise of Apple, remember after Katrina, they had a link to donate on their main page? I suppose that's what you are talking about. It's a tricky dance, though, deciding which charities to go with (I'm sure there are millions of organizations that would love to have that kind of exposure).

mrcammy's got it. The idea is having a product option with a portion of it's price going to the (RED) campaign, it doesn't necessarily have to be COMPLETELY red. It's about spreading the idea, not flaunting, and an entirely red Mac would be boastful ("Look at me and how I donated"). Even if some of the smaller gadgets do look kinda cool, a MB(P) (or g* forbid an entire iMac) would just be gaudy if completely red.

And gooood point by whoever made photo editing comment, red bezel=bad idea. I’d hate the red messing with my photo work.

So I think Converse really has the right concept with a simple red accent on the product, and Apple should follow suit. Any style or color sneaker, but with a red top eyelet and a donation is made (though the pre-produced lines all have other red aspects, any custom "product red" shoe can have no red whatsoever, if one wishes, but for the eyelet. Notice too, almost all of the converse (RED) sneakers are sold out).. So on the MB something as simple as the logo, or the power button, or LED would probably suffice.

It's something simple, something chic, and still noticeable; and it’s not in-your-face ugly…

Absolutely. I like the idea of it being a very small, but often-seen spot of red. Just enough for you to remember every time you tie your shoes, or power up your MB, why you bought it. Okay Apple, we got the solution, you can stop paying those designer-guys.

I think the red would look a little goofy... kind of like those Ferrari edition laptops someone was making a few years back. Bad idea.

I think you're talking about Acer and they are actually still selling very good!

Acer made those, and I think they were a flop. Although you can put a tuxedo on a fat man and he is still a fat man. MacBooks have a leg up since they already look nice.

A Shu-ham

This is sick. You might get a good feeling for buying a red macbook and saying 'oh money from this purchase will go towards AIDS research' the thing is. Apple stands to make a LOT of money off of this, all of which will not go anywhere near aids research. Also these marketing gimmicks put caps on how much money they'll actually donate. Ironically, Bill Gates is doing way more to support AIDS research, and all the money is coming out of his own pocket.

I think it would be a good idea. Already, if you want one in red, you can have one. there's a company called colorwarepc @ colorwarepc.com that sells em in just about any color. the white apple on the shell looks real good on the red. Go check em out. u can also get any ipod in any color too! kinda pricey, but if you have the money, go for it!

Ironic indeed. Maybe we should go buy more Microsoft products to pad his wallet a bit more and indirectly affect the amount of money he's putting towards curing humanities ills. Much easier.

As I understand from [Product] Red website, the product need not all be RED in color!! It is a brand differentiation at the choice of the manufacturer.
I personally think it would look pimpin' hot if they do black Macbooks with red trims like the U2 iPod and sell it as [Product]Red Macbook.

Colorware'd (Apple Logo removed in post, perhaps)

The logo was removed in post prod. for sure. They did a fine job but for a slip up between 00:52 and 00:54 shows the logo.

I do like the red, I could see enough people wanting it that it would be worth making a bunch, plus a good cause. And the bottom line for people that don't like the red...don't buy one...simple.
