Hopefully this only means that while the hardware will not go on sale for a few more months, the app developers will get the information needed to start developing apps for the future device to be released in the fall/winter.

Of course, they could also have figured out how to allow developer created apps on the current atv3 I guess, until new hardware is ready (or maybe for testing only). iCloud/iTunes storage of apps, paging apps in and out as needed in the local storage maybe possible, but clunky.

Why on earth do you think that just because it's delayed they won't show it on stage? Nothing has changed here. Just the release date.

Because I'm a raging cynic! :D

Besides, the article clearly states that it "will not be ready to debut at that time." That's not a case of "we're going to show it and release it in the fall," that's a case of "we're not going to show it...period." Given that the keynote is only a few days away, I suspect that this is probably quite accurate.

How much more time do they need? Apple is a company of unlimited resources and yet we can't get an updated Apple TV after 3 years?

Agreed. I'm getting more than a little disenchanted with a company sitting on billions in cash that releases buggy software and lags on releasing—albeit the best, by far—updated hardware (read: new Cinema Display, Apple TV, etc.).

Honestly. For a company that has enough cash reserves to purchase every single team in the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, along with Real Madrid, Barcelona, ManUnited, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool (look it up if you don't believe me); would at least make you think they can negotiate their way through these "contracts".

I have been waiting patiently for 2 years to add a second AppleTV to the house so I don't have to keep moving it from bedroom to living room. "A new AppleTV is about to be announced" is constantly rumored, so I have waited. I thought for certainty that a new one was forthcoming when they lowered the price.

NYTimes is not always correct, but they are a pretty reliable outlet that someone at Apple leaks info to (officially/unofficial back channel) just before these events to set expectations, so I believe this rumor.

But this same thing happened for the watch

What a joke that Apple sleeps on ATV this much.
I hope they have at least a preview with maybe shipping later in the year. This wait is awful. There is so much expectation on this device for so many years.

Apple won't be showing the Apple TV because they will be showing the "Apple Hub" which has the function of an Apple TV, Native Apps, Homekit, built in iTunes Server with internal storage, and functions as a WiFi router/Time Machine.

It's a pipedream but at least it's a dream.

Nah, I don't believe it. Lately it seems like when we're on the verge of a new product, we get all these articles saying the complete opposite cause of X. The MacBook is a good example of this.

Also, the Apple TV is in the wwdc logo, which is in the center and it says "the epicenter of change." This coming after news the Apple TV will be the hub for home kit, the center. The Apple TV might be poised to become the center of the digital hub instead of having a Mac as the hub. Much cheaper approach for iPhone users to simply buy to encourage home kit and similar adoption.

Also the atv is the last device not on N which is a real bottleneck with 1080p. I would even venture this new device may pave the way for 4k.

i already bought two chromecasts (hate them) and a Fire TV Stick (love it) by now. all i am asking for is a UI overhall on my Apple TV doesnt even need to be a new box.

Apple is really late to the whole streaming partaay

I really like my chromecast. It pairs perfectly with the TV cast app from the app store that allows you to stream video directly and in the background without taking up the huge amount of resources it usually does on the mac. Why do you hate it? I know mine crashes once a week, but other than that no complaints.

Well, if these rumors are true, and I hope that they are not.. there is still that new 17" 4K Macbook Pro to be announced! You know, the one that nobody is talking about but I keep wishing for.
I can't be the only imaging professional that regularly works on the road, doesn't want a smaller screen and doesn't want to carry an external monitor (something I had to do long ago when laptop screens sucked, anyone remember Pismo?).

Maybe it is just me.

You never really know what might show up @ WWDC... I'm keeping hope alive!

Not introducing it at this time doesn't make any sense. If the new AppleTV is to have apps, then the best place to introduce it is at WWDC. If they miss this opportunity, they'd have to wait until 2016 and I can't imagine Apple waiting another year to catch up in a product category that is heating up with viable competitors and one that is critical to HomeKit.

The only alternative is Apple releasing a major software update for the existing AppleTV with web apps like they did with iPhone and then in the Fall introducing new hardware that can run native apps.

this won;t show up until the iPod/iPad event in the fall at least. Which sucks, because since Yosemite my Apple tv and mac don't always share well. I'm so ready for a new one.

mostly a first world problem but i am too lazy to constantly navigate it with my phone. i rather have an actual interface i can control with an remote. it also doesnt let me change its dns so i cant play foreign netflix countries or hulu with it. plus i find it very buggy for example i play something through netflix, use my phone for other things, go back to the app but it doesnt realize i am already playing something so the controls dont work or it mysteriously plays the next episode even when i reboot my phone. thats ome thing i never understood how thats even possible lol

I'm not buying this. The AppleTV is obviously central to the theme of WWDC hence the invite they sent out. We may not see the hardware but I think we will definitely see the software (ala iPhone and iPad autumn reveals).

They never would have introduced a new piece of hardware without the streaming service anyways. Why is this a surprise?

Something as big as a new streaming service for TV will get its own Keynote along with the hardware to power it.

If this is the result of content negotiations not being finished, it could be that Apple and some content owners are playing poker over the contract terms.

Makes sense to debut both the hardware & the subscription service at the same time, though...
Therefore, if one isn't ready... they kinda HAVE to postpone the announcement.

Also, if it really is as big of an update as we all hope- I suppose it deserves its own event.
