Interesting! - I wonder how recently they've decided to pull this?

Especially with the Support Document w/ HomeKit mentioning "Apple TV 3rd Generation or later...."

I've still got hopes that a new aTV will be announced next week!

I switched to Amazon Fire TV with excellent results. Small price to pay to get a new generation streaming device. My current Apple TV used for streaming my pictures, videos, and one app HBO Now. I can wait a longtime for the Apple TV release. Wish Apple well and seriously hope a game changer TV device will one day appear. If nothing comes of it, well I am doing just fine.

Am I the only one who's fully fed up with this constant hype of a new Apple TV and then they pull their plans at the last minute again for years??? What. The actual. $#!^.

You assume the rumors were true. Maybe Apple never had plans to talk about new Apple TV hardware at WWDC. This talk of pulling etc could just folks covering their butts

Well, this is disappointing. I really want to buy an Apple TV. I have never owned one, but will not buy the current version since it seriously old tech. Amazon Fire TV is looking like an option...

Yes, but that's not really the point. It may be true that they'll introduce an :apple:TV set top box in Fall or some other later date, but my original point was that now WWDC will be boring.

I will be traveling on Monday and won't be able to catch the keynote which disappointed me...until now. Now I don't care.
But you're not not willing to wait and see what they show on Monday huh? You've already decided that this news on a RUMOR SITE is true. Go ahead, be disappointed.

What is it that everyone wants this (not mentioned by Apple) new box to do?

Forget about costs and business stuff for a second. When I, or the family, wanna watch a show on the TV screen, I wanna get it right away. Unlike web-based solutions, traditional TV gives viewers content the moment it turns on, practically no boot up delays. It also doesn't have to download from the web. If you want to, you can switch your source from live broadcasts to VHS, DVD, etc. Again, with negligible delays (switching input source, going through DVD menus, etc.).

1. How can the Apple TV give me what I want faster and better than the traditional methods like TV Guide, Cable on-demand, PPV, or locally stored content?

2. How can I discover or decide what to watch next, without going through unwanted ads?

3. How does this integrate with existing Apple products and services like Apple Pay, iTunes Match, iTunes Home Sharing, AirPlay, etc.?

I actually appreciate Apple taking their time to finish a product. Too many products seemed a little rushed recently.

If there's an app store in the wings and they need developers to create apps for it, then I imagine they might preview the new hardware but not release it. Sneak preview of the Mac Pro is an obvious precedent

This is exactly what I was thinking. After all, it is a World Wide Developers Conference. Sneak peek at the new software for Homekit & TV apps, give devs an early jump on making apps for it, release hardware this Fall.

So WWDC will be

New store opening montage
Look at our sales
Here's how much we pay to developers
iOS 9
OS X Ganja smoker
Watch OS update
Tim talks that this year will be the best ever and he can't wait to show us....next year.
Don't forget Drake on stage talking about his new DJ gig.

More likely Apple is leaking to lower expectations.

Not by a long shot. I've had Apple TV for years and last month I got tired of waiting for an update so I made the switch to Amazon Fire. The voice input works amazingly well and since I am an Amazon Prime member I enjoy getting to watch a lot of movies free that Apple would have charged me to watch. Amazon has their act together both with the Amazon Echo and Amazon Fire.

not necessarily - hardware could be previewed next week to allow developers to create apps ready for release when the mooted TV service is ready. Just because it won't be released next week, doesn't mean they'll pull it entirely. If the various events and workshops included some with new ATV focus, it'd be hard to cancel them without it being glaringly obvious

But most of the events and workshops at WWDC currently have mystery titles like "wait and see" or "you aren't going to want to miss this". They can change them all on Sunday afternoon if they like and nobody will be any the wiser.

I see. Well at least that anxiety of missing is gone.

Well since the Apple TV might be mia, the best thing that happen, is Bono gets onstage to talk about Songs of Experience

He then tells the crowd since you did not appreciate Songs of Innocence for free this one will be $500 on itunes, and you have to download it yourself this time, he then throws down his mike and exits the stage.
