That’s the thing. All they did was change the cable that’s in the box. They didn’t change any requirements. You can still use your old cable and your old brick.
if you decide to use the new cable, then yes you have to buy an adapter, or use one that you may already have.
but the assumption is that you already have an old lightning cable or an old brick. With the headphone jack, they had to include some form of adapter, because there was no alternative. With this, there is. It’s called use your old cable
But they changed something, and then also removed something related to it at the same time. And on top of that put the burden of their change on the consumer with the consumer now getting less with their purchase than before while they get to come out ahead on top of that.

No no... It's because not including a power adapter was ridiculous a month ago. Now it's just common sense...
Remember when Apple screwed everyone over by not only going with only USB on the Bondi Blue iMac G3, killing off everything serial, but also going *only* cd-rom? They had to rebuy everything as USB, including a floppy drive. What suckers, HA!

And then didn’t raise the price of the phone. So they pulled out something, saved the environment and didn’t raise the price. Seems like an all around good thing.

And at the same time took away something and left the price of an existing phone the same. The whole pricing aspect doesn't quite fit in. Seems like we've been over it all a few times.

This case is different, in the sense that Samsung has been supplying users with USB C bricks and cables for a while now. Apple has only done that for one year and most users keep their phones for longer than a year, got to give Samsung credit for that. Wished apple shipped the USB-C brick with the 12 series, but we all know apple loves the environment, and totally not a lie.

Also got to take into account that the majority of android flagships have had USB-C, so if a user is switching from Samsung to Oneplus, they will theoretically be fine.

Wait for another year, 2021, when Apple will get rid of the port, samsung will make fun like always, and after 1-2 years Samsung will start do the same...Samsung is the definition of hypocrisy

Why should the consumers get less for what they pay while manufacturers make more in the process on top of it?
Do you have some accurate inside information that Apple is making more money with this year’s iPhones just because they dropped the charger?

They put OLED into all models, doubled the base storage in Pro models, put 6GB RAM in Pro models, added Lidar in Pro models and 5G is in all models.

But no charger! Good lord! What a rip off!

If you think you are getting “less” just because there is no charger (which you have several already) then I’m speechless, really.

Also, if you, as a consumer, feel that you are not getting what you “deserve” then you vote with your wallet. It’s not like there are no options.

That’s how it goes. Market economy is a fantastic thing.

Ugh, was really not wanting this to become a standard - so the future is you have to buy the charger to be able to use the device your purchasing. Earbuds as well?

Another way to transfer some costs to the buyers for the Mfrs.
You don’t have to buy anything - and you and all the upvoters know it perfectly well.

Just use any of the half a dozen USB chargers and USB-A to Lightning cables you already have, if you don’t have a USB-C charger.

In the worst case, you might have to buy a USB-A to Lightning cable.

But if this is the end of the world for you, then I guess it is.

but ... were we not told in previous threads that you can not reuse charge blocks? Since, well, you've got to include the one you got in-box with the phone when selling or take a hit on the sale price. I mean, it's useless without the charger.

Don't lie, Apple would be criticized for continuing to ship such a dated cable with the iPhone 12 if the USB-a ended Lightening cable was included. "Geez, if Apple is going to continue to stubbornly stick with Lighting, instead of -finally- moving usb-c, "the least" they could do is switch to Lightning with USB-c....."

Apple only shipped the USB C brick for the 11 pro series, didn't they? I mean even applecare+ is 2 years (one-time payment), showing that there is at least a decent percentage of users upgrading every two years. I have the Xs max and that came with the basic brick.

I am kinda confused about what you are trying to say since it seems a bit over the place.

They didn't change anything in the existing models like the SE yet took out and changed what was always included and continued to charge the same price.

You always got it as part of your purchase and now you don't. Seems fairly clearly as less. Whether or or someone might care about it that's something separate and different.
Also, if you, as a consumer, feel that you are not getting what you “deserve” then you vote with your wallet. It’s not like there are no options.
Voting with your wallet doesn't really work when dealing with something that's essentially too big to fail and everyone just follows whatever it is that they do anyway because they simply can.

New standard...
- Knock $0 off the price of your $1000 flagship phone.
- Change $20 for a cable + charger.
- When everybody buys cheapo cables, block them through software updates and say 'we don't support 3rd party chargers/cables because they are dangerous'.

Shortly after the new iPhone 12 models launched without power adapters, Samsung shared an ad mocking Apple for not including a charging accessory. That commentary hasn't aged well, however, as there's more proof that Samsung too is planning to ditch power adapters for its next-generation smartphones.

Rumors in June and October suggested the upcoming Galaxy S21 devices would not include a power adapter or headphones in the box, which has apparently been confirmed through regulatory information.

A filing with Brazilian regulatory agency ANATEL that was discovered by Tecnoblog (via 9to5Mac) approves the new Galaxy smartphone models for sale. The documentation has few details about the new devices, but it apparently confirms that none of the three new smartphones that are coming will be sold with charger or headphones.

By removing the power adapter and headphones, Samsung will be following in the footsteps of Apple. None of the iPhone 12 models come with a power adapter or EarPods in the box, instead shipping with just a USB-C to Lightning cable. Apple said that the accessories were eliminated for environmental reasons, but there has been speculation suggesting Apple removed the power adapter and EarPods to cut costs due to the expense of the 5G chips used in the new iPhones.

Samsung too may be planning to stop selling headphones and power adapters alongside new Galaxy smartphones in order to save some cash, offering the accessories as a standalone purchase like Apple does.

In the past, Samsung has mocked Apple's design and product decisions before doing the exact same thing. When Apple removed the headphone jack from the ‌iPhone‌ 7 in 2016, for example, Samsung made fun of the iPhone before eliminating the headphone jack from the Galaxy S8.

Samsung's new smartphones are expected to debut in January with new camera modules with up to four rear cameras, higher capacity batteries, faster chips, and more.

There is maybe 5% of phone owners who use ear speakers which comes with a phone.

Apple really should resuscitate the “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” adverts, but with Apple and Samsung.

Apple: “We’re removing the home button...”

Samsung: “HA! Idiots! Guys - create an ad about Apple removing the home button. Guys - remove our home buttons!”

They could easily get an entire ad campaign out of that.

They're unlikely going to be getting rid of the port. There are so many other things that connects to the phone via the port. It's valuable for tools for content creation that requires external accessories like microphones, drone remote controls and gimbals, etc etc.

as they should

no phone should come with a charger. you already have many chargers and/or you have many USB ports that can charge your phone
And so des apple, their charger( not the charging cable) is usbc) the only thing different is thatvapples charging cable ( not the charger) is terminated in a different connector at the device end

But every other chargeable battery powered device I own comes with its own charger. Why do smartphones have to be an exception?

Got a new iPhone 12 and can't use the charging cable that came with it because I don't have a USB-C brick. I guess I will have to sell my old iPhone without the charger cable and brick because I need it to charge my new phone.

I get the whole environmental argument but they could have at least put a coupon code in the box for a free/reduced charger brick if you need it.

1.5 billion smartphones are being shipped every year and the port rarely changes. What other device reaches that sales volume?

Why should the trend continue?

Are we having this discussion again? Feels like Groundhog Day.
Get over it people. Sorry if you don't like it, happy if you do.
Many reasons pro and contra.
But guess what; neither Apple nor Samsung are going to change this and most will follow sooner or later.

Let's stop whining about it and do something productive.

It’s monkey see, monkey do, unfortunately.
In all honesty, it’s quite sad to see Samsung doing this. They are one of the most successful mobile OEMs bedsides Apple, and they’ve got the size to create and begin successful trends, like they did with the Note line. I don’t see why they feel the need to do everything exactly like Apple does.
Sure everyone copies everyone, but joking about something and 2 months later doing the same is a bit too much... and blatant.
