Anyone recall the text only game Zork? I remember seeing a computer & screen in a department store and sat down to explore Zork @ 3PM, after an hour the department store was closing, it was 9PM and dark outside. It was my first experience of the time suck that computers could offer! 😵‍💫👀
ZORK!!! I played them all. And the clue book had the invisible ink with the thre clues that got more specific for each. I even play it sometimes today and try to do it by memory.

And I seriously think if they did ZORK on some VR glasses, I would be pulled strongly toward considering them.

Zork was awesome. Blade of black pool was my first foray into that time suck.
Played so much IF. HHttG, LGoP. We even played one in gifted in school. I think Temple something. Had to climb the vines into the tower, avoid a rug trap, insert a coln to move the status so it wouldn't shoot you. And DON'T puil the lever!

I know that it works, obviously. I'm just saying I'd much rather play an immersive game like this on a larger screen Mac with mouse and keyboard controls (like I used to play it when it originally came out). I don't care about high resolution.
I see. I guess while we're at it, there's the tradeoff of being able to play such a game on the go.

Oh man...this game came out when I was in 3rd or 4th grade and took me longer than I care to admit to beat (I used a Performa 550 at the time!). I even had the giant book to help you solve some of the puzzles. Great game, great memories.

Wish they still had the books. It's not the same on a website. Especially if I am playing on the PC. Rather have a book than ALT-TAB

I found this on my shelf. It has the books and 19 maps. Want it?

I had the CDROM but I can't find it. Prolly gave it away years ago.

At the time, I'm not sure the game was even beatable without the book. Or if it was, it was beyond my 9 year old pea brain.
I usually could win with minimal hints. But then I'd always do another run literally by the book. And be like how in the freaking world know how to find some of this without the book. But at least it was mostly extra stuff.

Wow. My husband and I used to play Myst back when we were dating. This wasn’t even our favorite game, though. We loved Sam and Max and King’s Quest more. I’d love to see those old games again. At this point I think we forgot enough we could play them all and feel like they’re new adventures! 😆

It blew my mind when I realized you could actually win the game in less than 15 minutes if you knew the code to the fireplace on the main island (no this is not a spoiler for anyone playing the game!). But then what fun would that be.

Right. That's ending the game, not playing the game. I have played several games where even knowing the codes doesn't help. You still have to go through the motions of finding the codes.

Like it better if they aren't actually using the code that you just have to get to whatever location and do something, and it says you hear a click or scraping stone etc in the distance, and then it is open when you go back.

Even trickier can be let the player use the code but have some item where the code was in the game that you absolutely need to win

And the frequent recommendation from tech support (phone calls with long wait times on hold) to reinstall MS-DOS and Windows, using boxes of floppy disks and install updates and drivers (slowly downloaded over a dialup modem).
The worst was having like 12 floppies for a program, and on disc 12. "File corrupted" nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

After one of those adventures I bought a box made of a special metal (mu metal) that protects against stray magnetic fields. Very old disks are still readable.
