With no 3.5 jack connection how am I going to charge my phone overnight (so that it is fresh in the morning) and listen to podcasts at night as I go to sleep? This is a monumental fail for me, my business and my pocketbook. I have been a solid apple user for over a decade and am now looking into how to migrate to another platform just so I don't have to deal with bs like this any longer. I strongly suspect that there are more than a few others out there that feel like this decision is going to make owning an Apple iPhone more expensive and more difficult to use effectively.

For the first time I can't imagine wanting this newest iteration of a phone I have used successfully for years. I am annoyed that I have this much invested in the Apple platform and feel betrayed At least this 6s will be last long enough for me to find an exit strategy that won't kill my pocketbook What part of having to worry if another piece of kit is sufficiently charged before it can be used is a good thing? If the failure mode to not having wireless earphones charged is to pull the backup wired earphones and dongle out then why have the bluetooth earphones in the first place?

Rant over, as well as my loyal business

A "Y" adapter is been made
as I type no need to jump ship.
Cheers

And how soon will people be losing the small pods? I like the ones connected just for the fact that they have a cord and less likely to lose one.

Don't worry they have you covered.

Apple will be releasing a premium chain that clips to your Airpods. Styled by Hermes these beautifully crafted chains will link both Airpods and result in a safe and stylish way to keep track of them. RRP $69.99

At this point in time, the term Bluetooth is ubiquitous for any wireless peripheral connection to a device.

Again, there's definitely some Apple-shroud here. But reading some of the pre-keynote reports this is an entirely new chip that's been in R&D for at least 5 years.

Pay attention - AirPods and Beats with the W1 are NOT comparable to current Bluetooth headphones.

Until we have a tear down and first hand reviews, it would appear this is a new wireless technology similar and compatible with Bluetooth.

Or perhaps think of it as a new standard ala 802.11ac - when an AC-enabled router is paired with another AC-enabled device, new features are available such as beam forming. Of course you wouldn't say an AC-router/device is laggy like an N-router because it's not. I believe the same applies here.

Well with all your money you dont need to worry do you.

Ha ha thanks for making me laugh.

So how did Samsung manage to get an even higher water resistance certification and still keep the headphone jack?

Pity their phone is a POS. Let me know when they have 3D Touch, better cameras, dual-cameras, superior performance and a better OS. Thanks I'll be waiting.

If the 3.5mm jack is 50 years old, how come they didnt mention one word about the lightning connector providing better audio quality?
How come even high end headphones use the 3.5mm connection and deliver amazing sound?

The ear is analogue so using a digital connection won't really improofe anything...

I think this change is just very inconventient and not due to courage or anything else but due to wanting to keep the pone thin while also adding the new home button and waterproof capabilities.

"Give it away" - the phone starts at £600 in the UK, hardly giving anything away - Apple have actually taken away the ability to use your headphones and charge at the same time without purchasing other accessories, they've taken away and are charging more for it.

Spoken like a true Apple Fanboy, the S7 is a great phone, has the best camera currently on the market (in a phone), performs very well, is more waterproof AND keeps a 3.5mm jack. It's a great phone, you're just blinded to it. Huawei also make a good phone with those dual cameras (Leica branded ones). You can easily pick anything off of the new iPhone list you made and apply it to other phones. Let me know when the iPhone has an advanced OLED curved screen (next year). Thanks, I'll be waiting*

*See what I did there?

Oh so you aren't getting better performance, a better camera, better battery life and more storage then?

Yeah it's a "good" phone. Just not good enough in too many ways.

Except headphones can now have adaptive noise cancelling and finer controls while still retaining the same excellent audio quality.

Plus, Apple's vision isn't for lightning headphones. It's all about wireless. Their new wireless chip is supposed to provide better battery life, more consistent connection and better audio quality than anything currently out there from a wireless perspective.

Amazing to see the number of people here defending the removal of the headphone socket.

Does anyone remember when the first rumour of this appeared on MacRumors? And if there was anyone at all back then who thought it was a good idea?!

Then how does the Samsung maintain the water resistance when it has a headphone jack?
It doesn't. You wouldn't trust it.

Apple probably have more thorough tests. You see what they did with the Apple Watch's in the keynote.

Anyway, that phone needs to be water-resistant, for anytime it catches fire.

I did. It is a port that in had **** audio quality in most phones which makes Bluetooth a viable option. The people who wants high audio quality have been using external DACs/amps through Lightning for a while now.

Their new wireless chip is supposed to provide better battery life.

But that's one of the biggest problems for a lot of people by making everything wireless - Apple can say "better battery life" but they themselves quote 5 hours. That's not even enough for most long-haul flights! That's pretty poor in-fact. They've added more complexity and flaff as a solution to a non-existent problem (wired headphones).

I've been designing some new Bluetooth speakers and I refused to accept anything less than 12 hours battery life at a reasonable volume which should suffice to get most people through a day. 5 hours for such a device would get me some terrible reviews!

The S7 and S7 Edge have had no issues with waterproofing (the Active did) - Apple themselves still won't offer warranty for water damage on the iPhone 7, wouldn't that also be a concern regarding it's waterproofing? You can try it in water but if it fails you're not covered.

I get over 20 hours out of my new bluetooth Bose headphones. Lose one of the new air pods that would suck and no running with these. I believe it's a backward step Apple.

Maybe they should have put something more useful in the new found space than their taptic engine.

I've heard a lot of comments from some weirdo's complaining about always hating that 3.5mm hole and are glad it's gone - I'm surprised really since it's been replaced with a bunch of holes that serve no purpose!

you know what is pissing me off. Is the SIM CARD and Provider. Apple should become own provider.

It wasn't essential for making the phone water resistant, Samsung sells a phone with the 3.5'' jack and was able to make it waterproof.
Schiller gave another reason: they had to make room inside the device for other components. And that's true on the iPhone 7, while they have more space on the Plus and of course plenty of space on the iPad. Let's see if they remove the jack from iPads and Macs as well.

Oh right, so I guess Sony are frigin technical geniuses then as they managed to make water proof headphone ports YEARS AGO!!!

If Apple are that inept at technical design, I highly suggest they hire some of Sonys mobile division engineers...

Or basically Apple is talking UTTER BS to give excuses for ditching the headphone jack which is far more likely..

Apple truely really are getting more and more arrogant and treating its customers with more and more contempt as the years role on.

Oh please. They don't tout those JD Power awards for nothing, they want to be atop customer satisfaction. The fact is, it is a risk to remove the headphone, not a cash grab. No one is going to buy the airpods, we're all going to use the same headsets that come with it now. Nothing to see here.

Hope you realize that a wireless chip, no matter how efficient it is, consumes more battery if you turn it on then if it is off. So i think your argument does not stand. Turning on the wireless chip functionality on just to listen to music while i am on train/bus or car does not make much sense imo.
