One question I have is the choice to stick to lightning vs usb-c, especially with the MacBook and probably the Pro sticking to usb-c. Is there an advantage in sticking to lightning with everything moving to a newer standard?

As I said in another thread. The new iPhones have twin speaker grills at the bottom, so they have replaced the headphone jack with speaker holes, now does everyone remember the rumour that Apple was going to make fake speaker holes so it looked pretty?

https://www.macrumors.com/2016/08/12/iphone-7-second-speaker-cosmetic/

I hope they put something behind those holes on BOTH sides, otherwise they have literally removed one useful hole for several fake useless ones.....

The removal of the headphone jack is one thing and one thing only...extremely stupid and a cheap cash grab.

Phil Schiller is so full of himself it's almost funny. Other OEMs are able to create water proof phones with a headphone jack and pricing 5 hour ear puds like the jaybeards, Bose is asking for desaster.

Holes on the left aren't holes into the phone, they're for symmetry. the haptic engine is there.

Probably if people are going to keep rationalizing some decisions by posting how we have to get rid of something that works exceedingly well to spur on lessor technologies to get better. Why can't those lessor technologies get better on their own so that they surpass the "antiquated", motivating the masses to switch to them because they are obviously better and then few care about deprecating a lessor technology.

How are they "lesser" technologies?

Lightning connected devices offer better sound quality and provide far more useful features.

And Bluetooth connected devices are the future (perhaps not Bluetooth but some other wireless form like AirPods). Just because no one has been able to improve wireless technology doesn't mean it inferior.

How about waiting to hear the quality of the AirPods or new Beats to find out? My guess is most of the folks complaining about this use crappy headphones.

How is it a "cash grab"? They're giving us lightning headphones AND an adapter...

I'm fine with them removing it, I really am. I don't know if I've even used it on my 6S, that being said, please don't say it was to aid in waterproof. Samsung has IP68 and has a headphone jack. This makes you look kinda bad Apple. Hell, say it's for the bigger battery or something, just not something that we know isn't true.

Water resistance and camera upgrades are good things. But no headphone jack means it's not possible to keep the phone charging while driving in a car, using GPS and listening to music simultaneously. It also means iRig HD and Apogee Jam, 2 very nice guitar lightning interfaces, won't be compatible with iPhone 7. And the other question is: are iPads next to have no 3.5 mm jack? Then the macs too? I don't like where Apple is heading.

I've been using a little Bluetooth module to connect my 'normal' headphones for years as I liked not having to get my phone out to control the music so I'm all set for this ;P

It's the same old story though, as ever everyone whines because something old that they're used to is changing. People hate change.

Remember the ****storm when Apple took the DVD drive out of MacBook Pros? Now no one cares.

At. All.

So they have removed the headphone jack for fake ****ing holes!! They have put MORE holes in it when they could have not made any and had a more waterproof phone.....

Apple... Think Different.... To all common sense...

No. It's One speaker at the bottom.
With stereo sound in landscape split with the top much smaller ports. There is no way that 1 bottom speaker is nearly as big as those ports make it look.

I'm not the target audience for this discussion, as I never use a wired headset, only bluetooth or built-in speaker.

Good riddance indeed to outdated technology (that I don't use at all).

Agreed, I wish they'd eject the battery & camera next to sold-seperately, add-ons to spur on innovation in wireless power and holodeck technologies. So what if a battery-less phone can't work for a while. It's the progress push to the next iPhone after that that won't need batteries that I long for.

And 2-dimensional photography is so much older than 3.5mm jacks. Get rid of that antiquated camera technology so we can all have holodeck projectors in maybe iPhone 13.

I mean, if getting rid of something that "just works" fine for pretty much EVERYONE is what it takes to push progress to something better, get rid of the whole phone to spur on teleporter technologies too.

Just think:
  • With a teleporter, the equivalent of phone audio and FaceTime will achieve a "live" quality (because you will be there).
  • With a holodeck, we can just project the bands we want to hear into the room or car with us to play the music live- no adapters, no aux jack, no bluetooth, etc.
  • With wireless energy, we don't need to ever think about charging anything.
Yes, let's push progress by getting rid of what works fine today. ;)

o_O
Jeeze man, it's a removal of a headphone jack not the end of the world.

You get a free adapter, it really is not that big of a deal.

I give you my word, if the removal of the headphone jack starts the apocolypse (or causes zombies), I'll come here find this post and say you were right. After all...... "Think of the headphone jack, oh won't somebody please think of the headphone jack".

I know that, but I was hoping they fitted the speaker behind one and the microphone behind the other, then they have actually used the space. But it seems they have made fake holes....

I'll wait to see what ifixit shows.

oh they do really? Then tell me why the highest end ones aren't using that technology?

God it doesn't matter which gadget fanboys will defend every decision and even if it's a stupid one. Not being able to charge the phone while driving, not being able to listen to music and charge your phone...But according to Phil that's courage lol.

Good riddance indeed to outdated technology (that I don't use at all).

yeah sure a technology that's been superior for decades is now outdated because you didn't use it and Phil said so lol

Okay. Explain how a lighting connected device offers better audio?

Hint here is : look up DAC.

Fact is : if you have decent heaphones , the DAC shipped in the adapter for $9 is inferior to that in the 6S, so inferior audio.

The money spinner: you will be purchasing a new DAC each time you buy lightning heaphones , while the iPhone has one built in.

Lightning devices make no difference to audio, as the end signal is analogue, and it is the DAC that determines the audio quality. There always needs to be a DAC, the awesome advantage of the 6S is that you did not need to purchase a new DAC each time you bought lighting heaphones.

Another fun fact. My 6S has every single capability to that of the 7, I too can plug in expansive lightning headphones or buy a DAC to plug in, which I do won, but my 6S out of the box provides superior Audio quality to the 7, cause the DAC in my 6S costs more than the $9 adapter, and given apples profit margins, damn that DAC must be utter junk ;)

The 7 provides zero sound quality advantage over the 6S, as both have a lighting port. The 6S has superior audio sound quality due to its superior DAC.

I never use the headphone jack. i definitely won't miss it. Bring on the stereo speakers and better battery life in addition to the other new features.
They weren't able to add stereo speakers by removing the headphone jack.
They just turned the top earphone into a speaker.
They didn't need to for any other reason either while on that...
