anyone else find the "dont steal music" weird?

I don't quite recall as I got mine about 6 years ago...but I'm pretty sure that is the same wrap that came on the iPod when new.

Still need to find my iPod. Or at least the box so I can start the process...

I've always loved my third generation "fatty" nano. Shame they took video playback off the latest one, I guess if I had to replace it I'd look at the touch but it would be nice if there were a cheaper, simpler, smaller option like the earlier days.

I agree. The fatty one for me was the best. Very good for watching movies. It just felt right.

"Yeah it's a total shame that they're replacing potentially hazardous batteries with new devices that are out of warranty. No upside to that at all."

•Uhh, replacing a six or seven year old product long out of warranty with a new/refurbished with a 90 day warranty isn't enough?

"Seriously? The only upside is that Apple is providing you with a new device that won't explode and they are giving you a cleaner newer one with the same capacity."

•I don't get your logic (if there is any besides my lil brothers....'i just want it so give it to me!' We have an assignment for a logic class next Thursday and are supposed to bring in four examples of different types of logic. Just discovered my fourth one I'll call 'my lil bro's' logic.

Do they make you check your sarcasm detector at your logic class door? Next time don't forget to get it back.

Not surprised at all that the replacements are first-generation nanos. That's exactly what we got in Japan when Apple issued its recall here a year or so ago.

Oh please.. the good artist will always make money from concerts and tours. Its only a question how greedy you want to be. Art should be and art, not a business for some big companies, number of agents.
I disagree. There are a lot of good artists who can't make a living on it. It's the popular artists that make the living. However, I do agree that greedy businesses should stay out of it, which is why I deal solely through distributors which take no royalties.

Did you know that for major label artists, from all 0.99$ sales Apple collects 34 cents and the label keeps 55 cents. 10 cents go to the artist. 10 cents!
go figure..
Interesting. Though without the labels the artists might not have as many sales. 10¢ from many sales beats 70¢ from very few sales. Regardless, that's a lot of money going to the labels.

However, indie artists (depending on their distributor) keep 70% of everything, and 30% goes to Apple. So on every 99¢ song, Apple takes 29¢ and the artist gets 70¢. I'm not sure if these cuts are the same through every music distributor, but the ones I deal with take no royalties for themselves.

I'm fairly sure that this recall showed up ~2 years back and my first gen. Nano was replaced within 2 weeks. I didn't think about it again until this article.

However- I do not recall when I heard about the recall but it did mention that the batteries were overheating.

WTF is up with the "dont steal music" sticker...

dont tell me what to do.....

I am not saying I agree or disagree with you but here is my take on this.

Is stealing/illegally copying music really that bad.

Yes and no.
Prices of music on CD's used to be way too expensive a decade ago, the record companies had huge (too much) profits and I think they really overcharged for what you actually got.
Then people started to share their music and got Music illegally through the internet.
Eventually that behavior brought prices down considerably.
Prices for other things like software stayed high and sometimes are still too high.
Apps for iOS changed that partly, now it is possible too get many of them at reasonable prices.
But still other software like for OSX and Windows are over priced.
It is much better for them to sell a lot of them at low prices than few at high prices.
I am in a developing country now and especially there people can not afford those high prices and steal/copy music/software and the like.

Why is it so that people with certain gifts need to make way too much, its OK for them to make a good living but Tens of Millions (or even 100's) just because they are lucky to be "gifted"!
Look at sports for instance, some football players make tens of millions a year, same goes for Formula 1 and it spoils the whole game.
I myself had too go through a lot of education to where I am now, a pro but still make a miserable salary while I am gifted as well!

I am pretty sure though there are a lot of hypocrites on this forum, tell me, who has never illegally downloaded any intellectual property from the internet.

Even Steve himself used to do that in his early days.

Oh, and for people who complain about not getting a last generation replacement, you are lucky Apple even gave you a nice and shiny refurb back.
Other companies would just replace the battery or even worse send you one and DIY.

Apple probably bought the replacement units on craigslist for 10 bucks a piece prior to announcing. I was debating whether to send mine or not, and then I thought **** the sentiments. The new iPod nano is terrible, marketed as multi-touch, you can barely put a single finger on that screen, I'm not so disappointed to be getting a 1st gen iPod.

On a second thought, they're probably refurbishing the same units that are being sent to them.

I'm happy with this. My nano I sent back was my first ever Apple product, so I was a little sad to let it go, but it hadn't worked in years either. So to get a good-as-new replacement back, at no cost to me, it a good outcome. I will look after the replacement very well, then when I'm old and grey it might be worth something!

Just checked my replacement status..

Yay! :D

Really? Wasn't on my fifth gen iPod, 2nd gen iPod touch, or fifth gen iPod nano, or iPhone.

They have been on the first few generations of iPods and nanos. I had one on my 4th gen click wheel.

Why does this comment has so many negatives and why is everybody writing bad comments about that quote? He/She never claimed that he/she would actually steal anything or welcome stealing at any point. He/She just made the point that he/she does not like the sticker. And I have to agree: It's just another "every alien is a potential terrorist" thing.

As a customer, I would like to buy a device or service which does not gives me the finger the first moment I see it. What would you say about the idea that all new television sets must have a big black sticker on the screen saying "Do not vote if you consider watching"? Yeah, I know, this was disrespectful. But that's about what I feel when I see the "don't steal music" sticker.

I'm pretty sure that the poster of the comment above did steal music as much as anybody else in this forum, meaning: mostly nothing at all. Maybe one or two songs back in the days where no iTunes Music store was available. Remember the revolution? Finally it was possible to get a good quality service online for downloading music and not that peer-download thingies. But it all is gonna change with the new Android service, isn't it? But that's a different story.

About the topic: Nice to see the original iPods! I like them.

What the heck?! I filled out the request Saturday night, got the box on Tuesday and dropped it off to fedex on Tuesday around noon. Where's my friggin replacement? Hahahaha jk. I was expecting 6 weeks. No need for cheese here.

Man you guys must be very late to the game if you've never seen this before. Prior to this iPhone stuff, all iPods had that on the wrapping. [...]

It was also pretty much the time when you knew when a guy had an iPod, they also had a Mac (I was one of the few). There was this no, "Lets buy an iPod/iPhone, and ignore everything else Apple makes" bull there is now ;)

I bought a "Mac-only" first-generation iPod in 2001 even though I didn't own a Mac then. :p

I heard on NPR this morning that around 70% of people under 30 admit to pirating music, video, or software at some point.

I am not the one which says how many did but I am pretty sure You might be right.

And if that is the truth than My point was valid.
At least where I come from the prices went down dramatically.
And people (Myself included) are sometimes hypocrites.

Still don't know what to do with mine. I don't want a replacement because the engraving gives it a good deal of sentimental value, but I can't really justify spending €55 on a regular battery replacement either.

I purchased my iPod Nano refurbished but apparently it applies. I typed in my serial # and Apple said they're sending a box. I always wondered why when I charged or synced this Nano the battery got ridiculously hot. It was almost to the point where I didn't want to hold it.

If I had a first gen Nano I would want it replaced with a brand new first gen instead of the current gen. I'm sure for many it was their first iPod.

Perhaps they're asking insead of telling you not to steal music.

And still trumps most designs. It's truly one of the classics that stood the test of time.

You can't. You will get exactly what you sent in. no exceptions.

Did the electricians tape work well? Here's to hoping... ;) Sealed the envelope a few moments ago!

I was going to send my gorgeous white iPod Nano 1G away for a replacement but I am worried I might get the black version. Black is a cool too but I prefer white on Apple products as white has a sort of Apple nostalgic look about it.

I love my first gen it's a beautiful design (I still maintain it was the best designed iPod ever).

Personally, I think the 4th gen nano was the best - lovely curved glass display that blended in with the aluminium case. It's kind of what future iPhones should probably look like.

The 1st gen does indeed have nice looks, but suffers from scratching far too easily - both the steel back and the polycarbonate front case suffer from this. The 2nd gen and other subsequent models were much more scratch resistant.
