Personally, I think the 4th gen nano was the best - lovely curved glass display that blended in with the aluminium case. It's kind of what future iPhones should probably look like.

The 1st gen does indeed have nice looks, but suffers from scratching far too easily - both the steel back and the polycarbonate front case suffer from this. The 2nd gen and other subsequent models were much more scratch resistant.

Grrr! Mine's still stuck on:

I presume they sent you a box to ship it in? No sign of this yet for me.

Aye, they sent me the packaging a few days ago, I sent my nano to them in it the next morning.... So hopefully I will get my refurb in the next week or so. :)

----------

Indeed.

I don't get how a free refurb for a unit which is so old can be perceived as "F U to customers"....

Oh please.. the good artist will always make money from concerts and tours. Its only a question how greedy you want to be. Art should be and art, not a business for some big companies, number of agents.

Did you know that for major label artists, from all 0.99$ sales Apple collects 34 cents and the label keeps 55 cents. 10 cents go to the artist. 10 cents!
go figure..

It's not just about the artists. It's about everyone involved in the Music industry. The engineers and other behind-the-scenes people that bring the music to the masses count too.

Afterall, the person who applies the Auto Tune to the "talent" is the one that does all the work anyway. ;)

We actually use our in our practice to play background music for patients while on hold. It's absolutely perfect for that application.

My question to those of y'all that have done the replacement......

How long is it taking to get the replacement once you send it in? While not crucial to their experience, I'd prefer not to have them wait on hold in silence :)

It would be so much easier if they could take care of it at the Apple Store so the swap could be same day. That is how they did my iPhone replacement. Told me to hold onto the phone until the new unit arrives and then come in to swap out.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Funny stuff.

6 year old tech again.

Still a good product.

But it's a classic F U to the customers.

It amazes me how people have such a feeling of entitlement. I have a six year old ipod that I wasn't using because the battery wouldn't hold a charge. Apple offers to pick it up for free, send me a refurbished replacement for free with a new battery and case. How is the a classic F U? I will again have a usable iPod nano first gen which imo is very retro and cool!

The people who bitch about this probably bitch about pretty much everything in their lives. :p

You don't have the foggiest idea what you're talking about.

1st of all - major labels are now getting major chunks of touring income, including previously off-limit areas such as merchandise.

2nd - there aren't enough small venues in the world to support most indie bands full time. Unless you're selling a ton of merch at every show (every show), it's tough enough to break even on a tour, let alone make money, let ALONE make a living wage.

3rd - Every artist has a different deal with their label. And the example you gave is in no way a "representative" split. First of all, Apple takes 30%, all the time. Songwriters get a cut and artists get a cut. I've never seen a deal where the artist gets less than 12%, so that's already above your estimate. If you're also the songwriter, you get an additional 8 cents (actually, split between publisher + songwriter, but many artists are now self-publishing for that reason). So that's potentially 20 cents, and that's with a low-end deal. Artist shares of up to 18-20% are not unheard of.

And also note that the artists cut comes out before distribution costs - so before Apple's 30% cut.

Did the electricians tape work well? Here's to hoping... ;) Sealed the envelope a few moments ago!

Awesome! Keep us updated!

Interesting. When I bought my iPod, I just bought an iPod. I wasn't aware that one had the option to buy some kind of subscription where you would always be provided a newer version. That must have cost you quite a bit extra. No wonder you're upset. I, on the other hand, am pretty happy that a 6 yr old product with a small chance of being defective is being replaced with a brand new one.

This is awesome, now I don't have to feel scared when I go running or working out with my iPhone!

My nano died awhile ago...

Lets Do some math..

I got my email on Tuesday. How are people getting a replacement already? 2 days to get the box to send it in. 2 days more to send it to Apple. 6 weeks for a replacement. It's Friday. Is anyone else having a problem with the math?

I received my email on Friday November 11th. Registered same day but still have not received my box. It's still a fast turn around time for those that did get their boxes but probable.

I got my email on Saturday 11/12 but have still not received any box. :( Has anyone spoken with Apple about not getting their box? I will give them a call tonight when I get home from work.

For those of you wondering about your box

I called Apple. Due to popular demand the shipping boxes are back ordered. They will ship you one as soon as available. And for those concerned about that "ten day window" mentioned in the confirmation email, the ten days starts from when they SHIP the box, so no worries while you are waiting. I suggest that, while you are waiting, you set up your 1st Gen iPod, your Nano, your Touch, your iPhone, and your iPad next to your iMac and make a nice family portrait before your little one heads off for its pilgrimage to the mothership.

I have 4 Nanos of different generations, and love that they aren't giving a new one. I like the retro feel of the oldest Nano!

Yep. don't forget that artist management gets 15-20% of gross. The attorney gets 5% of every deal, and the agent gets 10% of every show guarantee.

In other news: I'm still waiting for my box as well. Doesn't matter to me which version of Nano I get as long as the scratches are gone.

Oh yeah cause the engineers and other behind-the-scenes people DEFINITELY see a fair portion of the money that the record label gets... Please, executives and managers will see the majority, a tiny portion will go to the ones who do the work if at all, I'm sure engineers are more on a project by project/annual pay check that excludes any form of royalties.

Watch a film called Dig! by Ondi Timoner, kinda shows you what the record labels are really like.

That's not the point. I'm in no way defending the record labels.

All I'm saying is that everyone involved is affected. If the entire music business shrinks, due to lower revenues, it means there are fewer jobs for the engineers, etc.

Where can I find this Dig! movie? Do you have a torrent for it? ;) Seriously, I'll probably check it out.

Many have commented that they're surprised Apple has so many units/parts in stock. They may or may not have. Some of the people who have received replacement devices may have received one off the shelf, but Motoroid (a few pages back) likely got it right when he suggested that they will be refurbished as received.

It is entirely possible that they had plastic covers manufactured for this recall. The tooling for moulding the plastic is probably still in place at the original subcontractor's factory, and it's not rocket science to pump out a batch of new cases.

I imagine they are refurbishing them in lots, using the just-in-time manufacturing model. It is likely hit-and-miss to initially estimate how many people still have them and will respond, so I'm sure they didn't make a boat load of new cases. The initial recall stock got sent out, then more recalled ones come in, then they re-furbish them with newly manufactured batteries and cases. The cost to do this is probably chump change.

I also have an opinion (but it is just an opinion) about whether Apple will replace broken units. My guess is they won't care. If the serial number matches, it goes into a bin to be remanufactured, or if in bad shape, destroyed. Some may undergo a quick forensic examination if they show signs of overheating, for documentation purposes, and then those units will likely be destroyed as well.

It is bad business and bad press to dispute petty details with recall customers. Toyota learned its lesson from this. When I worked in the automotive industry, I handled dozens, if not hundreds of minor and major recalls. The factory never gave a rip about what kind of shape the recalled part was, or even whether it had already been repaired. We just put the part in and moved on to the next one. It's much more efficient to do this than to worry about a broken screen or whether someone opened the unit once upon a time.

Again, I'm sure there will be an initial verification of serial number, a quick inspection for overheating or un-refurbishable units (which will simply be tossed out), and then they send a refurbished one. It would cost more in labor cost to quibble about what kind of shape they are in when they arrive. After all, they're 6-7 years old.

To the few whiners, think of this as an unexpected surprise, for crying out loud. Who knew you'd get a re-man Nano for free.

I was going to send my gorgeous white iPod Nano 1G away for a replacement but I am worried I might get the black version. Black is a cool too but I prefer white on Apple products as white has a sort of Apple nostalgic look about it.

I'm the exact opposite. Sent my Black Nano in, worried i might get a White one back.

My Nano didn't even hold a charge. If I wanted to use it, I had to hook it up to a power source. I still had it because it was my first iPod. Since it needed a power source, it stayed in my car, hooked into the USB port.

Collectors will want the exploding ones.

yer correct.i have two brand new ipod nano 1st gens in both white and black.i'm not going to claim a replacement cause i want it brand new not a refurb.both hven't even been turned on at all.i am only senting away to apple my refurb ipod nano black 2gb 1st gen to replace the battery again.

what result have people gotten from going into an apple store?

I took mine to an Apple Retail Store, but only to get the 10% recycle discount toward a new one. I bought a 16GB nano touch.

I really don't get those who are clinging to the old clickwheel technology. It was good at the time, but it's been replaced by and is in noway superior to touchscreen. Touchscreen won't wear out like the clickwheel. Plus the new nanos have a lot more storage. What's the biggest 1st gen 4GB ?
