I took mine to an Apple Retail Store, but only to get the 10% recycle discount toward a new one. I bought a 16GB nano touch.

I really don't get those who are clinging to the old clickwheel technology. It was good at the time, but it's been replaced by and is in noway superior to touchscreen. Touchscreen won't wear out like the clickwheel. Plus the new nanos have a lot more storage. What's the biggest 1st gen 4GB ?

I thought it was 2Gb.

Is that 10% of an iPod only or can I put it towards an iPhone 4S?

We have an assignment for a logic class next Thursday and are supposed to bring in four examples of different types of logic. Just discovered my fourth one I'll call 'my lil bro's' logic.

There's a name for it friend. It's called entitlement and most people on this board do indeed get themselves in that child state of entitlement when it comes to Apple products. Don't ask me why but I suspect it's the more you give people, the more they demand.

I would rather keep my 160GB Classic because it is 160GB. Once the touch can have that capacity, I'll gladly switch over.

According to the Apple Store that I went to, everything regarding the replacement program is to be done online.*

Wow, nice attitude you've got.

Without people buying music there would be no music industry, and no professional artists or musicians.

The quality of new music would decline dramatically since all those musicians would have to get other jobs and have no time left to put in 100% into their craft.

It follows that that means there'd also be no iPods, no iPhone and no iPads - since the iTunes store and the iPod paved the way for the rest.

But to hell with that, as long as you can get what you want for free - that's the main thing after all.

No good reason to have that on there IMO. I paid for the product to have a good music experience and do not need to be reminded of rules or treated as a potential criminal. I feel the same way about the Copyright Laws that you are forced to watch on every DVD and Blu ray. If people are going to go on Napster or Torrents and take tons of music I doubt this little message will be a convincing factor to deter them.

I understand the long term effects if everyone were to copy music.

All I need it to do is turn on and say "hello" if anything. No lectures please Apple.

But let the down voting commence :)

Lol, sounds like your 12.

I wonder how your boss would react when you told him "Don't Tell me what to do". Grow up.

Stop signs.....don't tell me what to do!

Stop Signs - Advisories that can change from intersection to intersection and are potential lifesavers. Huge difference from a command that is telling you not to steal "Yellow Submarine"

My boss pays me, thus he can tell me what to do. If Apple would like to start cutting me a check I would be more than happy to read their message.

Other wise, please keep your "commands" to yourself and off my personal property.

Why does anyone still have this iPod?!:p:apple:

For many reasons, actually:
- It's compact enought, but not too small as I consider the 6th gen iPod Nano is
- It's classy. It has the original iPod design that made thousands of people want to buy one.
- It is reliable, I've never had problems with mine
- I will always like the click-wheel
PLUS, there's also the most important aspect that nobody has mentioned yet: The Audio Chip
Some iPods (Classic 1-to-5G, Nano 1G, Touch 1-and-2G, iPhone 1-and-3G) use Wolfson chips, which have superior sound quality compared with the devices that use the later Cirrus chips. So it is an iPod that basically reproduces music (unlike itouch/iphone that do everything) and the sound quality is the most important item to consider.

Changing subjects, you really shouldn't complain about not having received the box yet. The 6 weeks they mentioned apply mainly to me. I am Brazilian so I had to drop my black 4GB nano at a Apple Authorized Service Provider. After they have collected enough units, they will ship them to Apple U.S. and then, after some time, receive the new units. When they arrive, the ASP will call me so that I can go there and pick my new iPod up. All in all, it will probably take 6 weeks for me to get my replacement.

Meanwhile, I will keep reading this thread :)

Totally agree. I've had other Nano's and iPods but the 1st gen nano is my favourite without doubt. I just hope they send me a white one back instead of the black as per my earlier post on page 6

If I were getting one, I would put it away, never touch it, and then sell it as a collector's item ten, fifteen years from now. Only problem is, replacement products don't usually come in the original box.

Exactly. The only reason I logged in to comment today was the same thought. How many of these in mint condition do you think there would be in the wild in say ten years?

PS. Holy S$&t! Just a couple of months off my 10 year anniversary at MacRumors. Well done Arn. Always a pleasure.

No Word Yet

I filed my first replacement on the 12th and the status is still at "Service Requested".

Is this time span normal? What should I see next?

I also have one filed on the 19th and "Status Not Available" where the other three I filed on the 19th are at "Service Requested".

I have several but none of them lasted long so this would be great to get them, or even one back working ... thanks Apple.

I'll wait patiently but curiously.

If you don't use it and keep it as a collectors item, will the battery still be working in 10 years or does it degrade even if you don't use it?

Finally got my box today after having requested it on 11/12.

Gotta love the attention to detail, Apple even included a pice of packing tape to reseal the box.

I got my box today after requesting it on 11/11. I'm just waiting to go to work so I can get the box.

Same deal here. Requested 11/12, box arrived today. The packing tape thing had me puzzled. I was thinking it was some sort of heavy-duty screen-protector, or maybe something to stop the battery exploding in transit, until I realized it was 7 precut strips of tape stuck together like a post-it note pad. Nice touch.

Mine's 4GB white, BTW. I'm wondering if replacement time will depend on capacity (based on differing availability)?

Got my box early last week... Sent back my iPod on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Online status still says "Diagnosis pending" and I haven't received any email saying they got my iPod. Is this normal or did something somehow get lost along the way?

i just checked my repair status, all 3 steps were completed today. we'll see how long it will take to be sent back.

Thanks for posting this.
That had me a little puzzled as well.
