I'm not making the claim that foldable devices are the way to go, but it's disappointing that Apple has gone from the being the Tesla of personal computing to Ford Motor co. Gone are the days of bold moves and innovations that change the world. Now, it's all cold-hard risk aversion and stock-holder coddling, which is sad.
You do realize they are coming out with the Apple Vision thing right? Bold, Innovation that will change the world one way or the other. Not sure if it will be a good thing or a bad thing but it will change things for sure.

they wasted time on dynamic notch and kept the same phone design for 4 years, what is time being spent on?
You act as if Apple does not retain the same design for at 3-5 years lol.

OG iphone-iphone 3gs 3 years

4/4s/5/5s= 4 years (the 5/5s has the same general body but is a refresh of the 4 design)

6/6s/7/8- 4 years

X/XS/Xr/11- 3 years

12/13/14/15- the 14 and 15 are refreshes of the original 12 design for 4 years

So this is not something out of the ordinary.

Dynamic island is actually really awesome, sucks you dont use it but doesnt mean it is not good.

I’m very surprised that no one mentions any more that you can completely destroy foldable screens, even the newest models, with *gentle pressure* from your fingernail. We went into a Best Buy and were playing around with a Z Fold 5. It was honestly pretty good. I didn’t notice the crease while it was on. Then I go to tap the screen and my partner mentions that I’ve just left a massive divot in the screen. It was just a light tap! So, we both spend the next few minutes drawing smiley faces on that screen. They are there forever. You can see them while the screen is active (unlike the crease, for me at least).

I could never own something that I could break through gentle, normal usage. To be fair, I also hate the notch. I think the floating island is slightly better. But, I also hate Face ID (I’m almost always in glasses and mask), so I’m still “rocking” my iPhone 8+.

I don't understand this line of reasoning.

On one hand, folding smartphones haven't really taken off, so it's hard to make a case that it's the next big thing. At the same time, Apple is somehow at fault for not releasing a similar product (which we admit isn't really all that popular?)

Looking at all the recent bad bets in tech, I feel it's even more important that Apple learns how to say a thousand "no" for every "yes". Even if it makes them look bad for supposedly not innovating.

Let me know if you want to be embarrassed or not.
Embarrassed for...? I just want to see your claim, that's all. Nothing more, nothing less. It's rare to see a person who possesses two foldables. Usually, one foldable (OnePlus Open / Pixel Fold / Z Fold) paired with other general slab phones or a flipable (RAZR / Z Flip / Oppo Flip / Huawei Pocket).
About your Pixel Fold & OnePlus Open, those two are very beautiful devices I have to admit. But those devices are not for me personally. My preferences, as I've explained in my early posts. Well, to each their own.
.

Now come, post your photos of your two gorgeous devices, young man. I sincerely want to see it.

I don't think you understood what I was trying to say.

Apple use to be the company that made a name for themselves by releasing products that people prior, thought completely impossible. The iPhone literally changed the world, as did many of its features and apps. These are the sorts of dreams that this company use to dream up, engineer, produce and then release. They were so cutting edge that they might as well have been the edge. Now, it seems that spirit is dead. It's about not rocking the boat. It's about letting other companies innovate to a certain point, then using the Apple machine to make it something people will buy, like Vision. That isn't new. It's been a product for years. They're just using their resources to make a better version of it. That is not (for the most part) how Jobs ran the ship. When the iPhone came out, people were floored. It was insane. Jaws were dropped. We all thought we were living in the Matrix. Same with iPad. Do you see that sort of thing anymore? No, you don't. They don't even do live events. They do canned events and show us refinements of old tech, year after year after year. That's why I said they have become the Ford of the tech world. They're making money, but in my opinion, they've lost there way; or at least lost their identity.

Apple is slowly shifting all the devices to OLED. A foldable Apple product will eventually come out. Waiting to see what Apple's first foldable product will be

Fair enough, you did.

It just doesn't pass the smell test, as phones keep getting bigger every year because people are hungry for bigger screens.

if you had a phone that unwraps to a 12.9" tablet but you had to unfold it 3 times to get the full screen, was extremely chunky your pocket, is not perfectly flat, and costs $2.5k, is that really better than just having a large enough screen?

...other than being able to let others use it, not being tied to the wall for power, not wearing ski goggles inside and looking like a toolbag.. The Vision Pro is not a replacement for screens.

This does like a good idea for foldables. I have no use for a larger portable screen, so these aren't for me, but a lot of people have a use case. I've only personally tried the Pixel fold, and the crease was noticeable, but not bothersome. I do wonder about overall durability (dropping, etc.).

As long as the standard slab is still an option, I'm good. Options aren't a bad thing.
vision pro is just the start though. it's the start of the development for glasses which will replace phones in the end.

i think the more you see vision pro around the more normal people will find it.

I am starting to see these videos pop up in my feed.

It's a pair of glasses that connects to your computing device and acts as a giant display. This feels like the real value to me. If you argue that foldables are useful because they pack a larger screen into a more compact form factor (and even then, it's still smaller than an iPad mini), why then are people objecting to smart glasses that pack a display that's as wide as your entire field of view, into a form factor that's no larger than a pair of ski googles, and which you don't even need to hold up?

People criticise the short battery life, but smartphones too had fairly short battery life once upon a time too. If people could compensate for this via power banks, why can't they do likewise by carrying around an additional battery back or two for the Vision Pro? If people say it looks funny, well, AirPods were also initially ridiculed at the time of announcement, and it's practically the poster child for wireless earbuds these days.

The fact that they are sitting aside development of a Fold to bring something like OLED to the iPad and MacBook is insane. Lol. Is everyone working on the same team? Let's not act like OLED hasn't been in phones, tablets and laptops for years.
I don't think you can do a fold without OLED, so it makes sense to do that first.

I want a foldable iPhone, but probably not a foldable iPad, so it really doesn't matter to me.

A gimmick? That's interesting. My foldables (OnePlus Open and Pixel Fold) work great and I'd never go back to a slab phone. I've been on the foldable train since the Samsung Fold 4 and never had any issues. But to each it's own.
I'm with you. I really wish Apple would wake up and make a fold. I actually like the flip better, but I may want a Fold next time for the big screen. I've had every Samsung Flip since the first one, they're getting better all the time, and I already use it more than my iPhone. I never had any issues with any of them either.

All I've had are the Samsung Flip and the Motorola Razr, and I've never had a failure. I've dropped them multiple times and no failures. (but I'm short so it has less distance to fall.) Never broke a phone by dropping it. They're definitely more rugged in my pocket, no more scratched screens.

100% agree this is where they should be going. Foldable screens are awful, who would want an iPhone with a plastic screen and a giant crease in the middle?
Me! (It's microthin glass actually, with a screen protector over it.)
