It's the HomePod all over again. They made it. They discontinued it. Now they don't sell the HomePod any more.

I mean they don't sell the original HomePod any more.

This nonsense really doesn't go away, huh?

Apple is selling a second generation HomePod with the same design and at the same price point as the original HomePod.

The story about the HomePod being a flop makes zero sense.

What probably actually happened: The original HomePod was too difficult and expensive to make. So Apple discontinued it, reworked it, and gave us a second generation that looks almost identical, costs the same, but is slightly less complex inside.

And to get back to the main topic: Something similar might (might!) be going on with the Vision Pro. But in reality, nobody here knows what's really going on.

Thing is, the first iPhone was a cool new product that was reasonably priced. The first iPad, again, was a very useful product with a very reasonable price. And so was the first watch; again, it was priced very well. Each of these products was better than anything else in the market at the time.

The AVP, on the other hand, was already competing with pretty popular headsets like the Quest 3, which is significantly cheaper and does the job just as well. The AVP is an overpriced, overcomplicated piece of hardware that was already launching into a niche market. In order to sell in large quantities, they should have made a far simpler and cheaper headset to compete with devices like the Quest 3 to try and at least get people hooked. Then, in the future, if it was selling well, they could try and go for the higher-end market.

The problem is that they went super high-end in a very niche market to start, and it flopped. Anyone with a brain cell should have seen this coming.
The first iPhone was not reasonably priced. It was crazy expensive.

So, comparing something to a “turd” is my “own unique interpretation” and now one else understood it? Doubt you would have objected if that was the case.

Language DOES matter. If my statement of opinion isn’t open to much interpretation, it’s because I did not intend for it to require interpretation. You want to talk about pointless? Stating an ambiguous opinion would be pointless, but it sounds like that is what you would prefer.

I think my statement about the device’s value to me more than “qualifies” my opinion but then again, I‘ve been “qualifying” my opinion of the market viability of this device in MR forums since well before launch, and the launch did nothing to change it. Thinking you are somehow “owed” qualification of a negative opinion without also asking those with a positive opinion to qualify it is at the very least, dishonest.

Lastly, you don’t get to choose how I express myself. You can choose to disagree or even dislike the manner in which I express myself, but condescension will get you nowhere.
If you want to portray a $4000 device that can do what the AVP does of as a piece of excrement then that’s absolutely fine. That’s your call.

But it’s just a bit of a silly thing to say isn’t it really?

“Hyperbole” they call it I believe… I’d like to think that’s where you’re coming from. But who knows!

When compared to the price of the Meta device, who in their right mind would even consider buying one?
Even if you are rich enough that the price isn't a factor, the Quest is a better buy for most people, in my opinion, since it has better apps (a lot of this comes down to having controllers). The only thing the Vision Pro may be better at is floating 2D app windows... But that isn't much fun, and the apps are limited compared to their desktop counterparts, unless you are just mirroring a Mac.

I can't do things on a Vision Pro that I could do on my PC VR headset from eight years ago.

This might bring the end of Tim Cook. What a disaster.
Disaster, yes. End of Tim Cook, get out of here. He's probably due for another stock payout. In the annals of history, vision pro will be remembered as much as Lisa which is to say not that much.

Priced seemed fine to me at the time, even without carrier discounts. It's not as if they launched it at $2000+. I only jumped in with the 3GS due to Apple's poor data speeds at the time compared to the Windows PDA phones. But the price was fine to me.

We all saw this was coming… and I’m sad because of it.

short lived ;/ how long before they disappear from the retail store display

How many are not reading the above article, and interpreting this as "Apple Cancels the Vision Pro"?

Not the case. Supply is just exceeding demand, so why keep making more?

Vision will live on for years!

All I hear is lots of fancy words from Apple regarding the state of Vision Pro.

I hope users that purchased this device are good with Tim’s statement that’s very similar to Googles statement regarding Glass.

Thanks for beta testing at top dollar and we consider you a pioneer and cutting edge user.

I don’t need to pay a company 3k for them to offer me that type of empty compliment.

How about the truth. Just tell us it’s dead.

Much closer to a metaphor, but I’m not expecting High Literature from any of us here at MR forums. Seriously, it’s not like referring to something we deem useless as a “piece of <excrement>” is at all unusual. Not sure why you think it is.

Repeat that sentiment for so many of their products. I'd like a small Apple Watch with week long battery life. An iPhone that doesn't need a battery replacement after a few years...
My Garmin Fenix already has over a week of battery life though- with GPS and tracking cycling metrics for several half day/100 mile rides. It’s a solved issue for some just not Apple.

Yes
Same on my Instinct Crossover

Garmin watches are phenomenal

Yeah, Garmin can go for days, which is amazing considering the amount of data collection and logging it does. I use the sleep tracking, which made Apple Watch a non-starter for me when I looked at them, admittedly, a few years ago. Based on claimed battery life it looked like I would be rolling the dice if I wore the AW all day and night without charging.

I'm looking at it from retail store visits where locally the Vision Pro had a large presence with multiple tables displaying the headset at the very front then another 2 tables halfway in the store for demos. Now there are is a table near the back of the store with both demo unit display and demos taking place.

This might just be a pause to allow them to swap the M2 in the current headset out for an M4 with more RAM to give more processing power, lower power consumption and better support for Apple Intelligence. Most of the parts could stay the same but I hope if they do this that they upgrade the cameras used for recording spatial video.

It’s possible, but I’d assume they’d target a lower cost device first before releasing another “Pro” iteration. But no one really knows for now.

It's ironic how misguided some of the iFaithful were trying to equate this disaster to the launch of the original iPhone. Saying illogical things such as: "nobody liked the iPhone... it was missing features, etc."

In fact, the Vision Pro's development, launch and subsequent attempt at sales were nothing like the original iPhone. Stop the nonsense.
Don’t forget to have a unique idea to post that original iPod thread!

I wouldn’t go THAT far... In 13 years of leading the company and launching/revamping entire product lines, not to mention all the money he’s helped to put in investors’ pockets, I’d be shocked if the board was cold enough to not allow him even a single flop of a product launch.

Without porn a $3500 device like this just isn't going to sell. In a few years someone will figure that out.

There is plenty of 3D porn on the web. Safari will get you anything you’re looking for… 😱

That's simply not accurate. The launch iPad was severely limited and got a lot of pushback from the market for being way too heavy and lacking virtually any software to make use of the size.
Like the first iPhone.

So I guess now the question is will Apple buy back AVP units sold because it would be crappy if Apple didn’t buy back a product with no future/developer support. It would anger a lot of these longtime Apple customers who purchased the AVP for an outrageous price only to get shafted by Apple.
The story is not that AVP is discontinued. The story is that manufacturing has stopped, which more likely means that they have enough in stock for a year worth of sales.still not great, but I don’t believe Apple will pull the plug yet. They may adjust the concept and bring out another product, like how HomePod was MIA for a while, and replaced by the Mini. Rumours are that a 2500.- USD device is coming, likely the same device without the front screen. Won’t change the game, but may hold the fort while they regroup.
